Age of alcoholism onset. II. Relationship to susceptibility to serotonin precursor availability.

Alcoholics who start abusing alcohol early in life have been found to exhibit problems with mood and aggression control more frequently than patients with a later onset of alcoholism. Because alcohol preference and consumption, as well as mood and aggression regulation, are believed to be influenced by serotonin, relationships between tryptophan availability and mood and aggression regulation were explored in alcoholics. When studied in the entire population, the ratio of tryptophan over other amino acids competing for brain entry (which influences brain serotonin) was found to be lowest one d

Age-of-onset heterogeneity in hereditary breast cancer: minimal clues for diagnosis.

Knowledge of the family history of cancer may significantly influence diagnosis and surgical management. Hereditary breast cancer (HBC) is common and accounts for approximately 9% of the total breast cancer burden. The pattern of HBC's natural history, including age of onset, increased incidence of bilaterality, integral tumor combinations in certain kindreds, and vertical transmission consonant with an autosomal dominantly inherited factor, when observed in context with the family history, enables pattern recognition so that the diagnosis might be facilitated. We describe seven families from

Cannabis Use and Age-Related Acceleration of Psychosis Onset: A Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Increases in cannabis use, potency, and legal liberalization have raised concerns about psychiatric consequences. Previous studies suggest an association between cannabis use and earlier age at onset (AAO) of psychosis, but an updated meta-analysis is needed. METHODS: MEDLINE, Embase, and PsycInfo were searched from inception to April 2025. Peer-reviewed cohort and case-control studies reporting mean and standard deviation of AAO of psychosis in cannabis users and nonusers or other effect size data were included. Pooled standardized mean difference was calculated using random-effe

Early-Life Social Determinants of SCA6 Age at Onset, Severity, and Progression.

SCA6 patients with the same size CAG repeat allele can vary significantly in age at onset (AAO) and clinical progression. The specific external factors affecting SCA6 have yet to be investigated. We assessed the effect of early life events on AAO, severity, and progression in SCA6 patients using a social determinant of health approach. We performed a survey of biological and social factors in SCA6 patients enrolled in the SCA6 Network at the University of Chicago. AAO of ataxia symptoms and patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) of ataxia were used as primary outcome measures. Least absolute

Cerebral cortical thinning in Parkinson's disease depends on the age of onset.

Patients with older-onset Parkinson's disease (PD) have more severe motor symptoms, faster progression, and a worse prognosis. The thinning of the cerebral cortex is one of the causes of these issues. Patients with older-onset PD manifest more extended neurodegeneration associated with α-synuclein deposition in the cerebral cortex; however, the cortical regions that undergo thinning are unclear. We aimed to identify cortical regions with different thinning depending on the age of onset in patients with PD. Sixty-two patients with PD were included in this study. Patients with PD onset at <63 ye

Age of onset for major depressive disorder and its association with symptomatology.

BACKGROUND: The age of onset (AOO) is a key factor for heterogeneity in major depressive disorder (MDD). Looking at the effect of AOO on symptomatology may improve clinical outcomes. This study aims to examine whether and how AOO affects symptomatology using a machine learning approach and latent profile analysis (LPA). METHODS: The study enrolled 915 participants diagnosed with MDD from eight hospitals across China. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale. The relationship between symptom profiles and AOO was explored using Random Forest. The effe

Variants regulating ZBTB4 are associated with age-at-onset of Alzheimer's disease.

The identification of novel genetic modifiers of age-at-onset (AAO) of Alzheimer's disease (AD) could advance our understanding of AD and provide novel therapeutic targets. A previous genome scan for modifiers of AAO among families affected by early-onset AD caused by the PSEN2 N141I variant identified 2 loci with significant evidence for linkage: 1q23.3 and 17p13.2. Here, we describe the fine-mapping of these 2 linkage regions, and test for replication in 6 independent datasets. By fine-mapping these linkage signals in a single large family, we reduced the linkage regions to 11% their origina

The relationship between age of gambling onset and adolescent problematic gambling severity.

The aim of this study was to characterize the association between problem gambling severity and multiple health, functioning and gambling variables in adolescents aged 13-18 stratified by age of gambling onset. Survey data in 1624 Connecticut high school students stratified by age of gambling onset (≤ 11 years vs. ≥ 12 years) were analyzed in descriptive analyses and in logistic regression models. Earlier age of onset was associated with problem gambling severity as indexed by a higher frequency of at-risk/problem gambling (ARPG). Most health, functioning and gambling measures were similarly a

Interleukin-1B polymorphism is associated with age at onset of Alzheimer's disease.

Interleukin-1alpha (IL-1alpha) and IL-1beta are two pro-inflammatory cytokines involved in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The genes coding for IL-1alpha (IL-1A) and for IL-1beta (IL-1B) are clustered in chromosome 2q14-2q14.2. In a previous work, we investigated the role of IL-1A promoter polymorphism (-889 position) in AD pathogenesis: IL-1A -889 TT genotype was associated with sporadic early onset AD. We now report the study on polymorphism of exon 5 IL-1B in position +3953, the nearest polymorphism to -889 IL-1A. We found that the genotype distribution of IL-1B +3953 varied s

HLA A2 allele is associated with age at onset of Alzheimer's disease.

The prevalence of the HLA A2 allele was investigated in a group of Italian patients with sporadic and early-onset familial Alzheimer's disease (AD and FAD) to analyze the potential association of this allele with early age of onset of the disease. The possible interaction between the HLA A2 allele and apolipoprotein E epsilon4 allele was analyzed. Our data suggest that A2 and epsilon4 alleles may have additive effects on AD onset, and that A2 may play an important role in determining or contributing to a very early age at onset. These findings further support the hypothesis of the involvement

Events and the onset of eating disorders: correcting an "age old" myth.

BACKGROUND: Previous reports have suggested differences between early and late onset cases both in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. In anorexia nervosa, women with late onset are thought to be more likely to develop symptoms in response to life events than early onset cases. Women developing anorexia in response to life events are also considered to show different background features. In bulimia nervosa, it is not known whether rates of life events before onset differ in bulimics who develop their disorder at different stages in life. METHOD: Previously published data were reanalyzed to

Age at onset of delusional disorder is dependent on the delusional theme.

The main aim of this study was to investigate whether or not subtypes of delusional disorder diagnosed by DSM-III-R show differences in age at onset and sex distribution. All out-patients first seen at the psychiatry clinic between 1989 and 1994 were diagnosed by DSM-III-R. Of 4144 out-patients, 51 patients (1.2%) were selected as having delusional disorder, and the demographic data and clinical profiles for these subjects were evaluated prospectively by the psychiatrists. Females outnumbered males by a ratio of 3:1. The type of delusional disorder most frequently encountered was the persecuto

Age, neurofibrillary changes, A beta-amyloid and the onset of Alzheimer's disease.

Intraneuronal neurofibrillary changes and extracellular A beta-amyloid deposits are neuropathologic hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease. Examination of numerous non-selected autopsy cases demonstrates that they are by no means normal concomitants of brain aging. Rather, the initial neurofibrillary changes indicate the beginning of Alzheimer's disease. A small proportion of cases displays particularly early development of the intraneuronal changes, indicating that advanced age is not a prerequisite for the evolution of the lesions. However, the mean of stages in the development of the specific neu

[Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy with onset at the age of 54 years].

We report a 55-year-old Japanese man who had an onset of bilateral progressive blurring of vision at age 54 years. His younger sister had diminished visual acuity since 14 years of age. On neurologic examination, bilateral optic atrophy was present. He could only count the digit numbers at 40 cm-distance with his right eye, and the visual acuity of the left eye was 0.08. Otherwise, neurologic examination was unremarkable. The PCR analysis of mitochondrial DNA prepared from whole blood revealed a G to A mutation at the nucleotide 11,778; the so-called Wallace's mutation. He was diagnosed as Leb
