Coronavirus Disease 2019 Infection and Early Diagnosis of Macrophage Activation Syndrome: A Case Report of a 62 year old man.

A 62-year-old man presented with a history of fever, headache, anosmia, ageusia, and diarrhea for 9 days. A clinical and epidemiological diagnosis of infection with the novel coronavirus was made. After symptom refractoriness, the second step involves using human intravenous immunoglobulin. Early diagnosis of macrophage activation syndrome (MAS) involves observation of the refractory nature of clinical support treatment associated with biochemical changes to the patient's baseline characteristics, suggesting the relevance of a favorable clinical outcome of weaning from artificial life support

COVID-19 in a temporal relation to the onset of multiple sclerosis.

Neurological complications of COVID-19 have been described. We present the case of a 27-year-old woman who developed COVID-19 in April 2020. She continued to present anosmia and ageusia eight months later. Six months after contracting COVID-19, she developed dysesthesia, hypoesthesia and hyperreflexia. Her magnetic resonance imaging showed demyelinating lesions, of which two were enhanced by gadolinium. She was positive for oligoclonal bands in her spinal fluid. This patient developed multiple sclerosis with a temporal relationship to COVID-19. We believe that SARS-CoV-2 led to her autoimmune

Encephalopathy in patients with COVID-19: A review.

Encephalopathy and encephalitis are major and devastating severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus-associated central nervous system complications. Hypoxic/metabolic changes produced by intense inflammatory response against the virus triggers cytokine storm and subsequently acute respiratory distress syndrome and multiple organ failure. Hypoxic/metabolic changes result in encephalopathy. The presence of comorbidities predisposes to hypoxic/metabolic changes responsible for encephalopathy. Altered consciousness, ranging from mild confusion, delirium, to deep coma, is h

Potential pharmacologic treatments for COVID-19 smell and taste loss: A comprehensive review.

The acute loss of taste and smell following COVID-19 are hallmark symptoms that affect 20-85% of patients. However, the pathophysiology and potential treatments of COVID-19 smell and taste loss are not fully understood. We searched the literature to review the potential pathologic pathways and treatment options for COVID-19 smell and taste loss. The interaction of novel coronavirus with ACE-2 receptors expressed on sustentacular cells and taste buds results in direct damage to the olfactory and gustatory systems. Also, the invasion of the virus to the olfactory neurons and consequent local inf

Pharmacovigilance imbalance analysis of VEGFR-TKI-related taste and smell disorders.

Taste and smell disorders (TSDs) can induce diminished interest in food, inadequate nutrient intake, and emotional irregularities, particularly among cancer patients. Previous research found that the main culprits of TSD development in cancer patients are cytotoxic drugs such as taxol, fluorouracil, cyclophosphamide, and anthracycline-based drugs. The advent of targeted drugs such as vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (VEGFR-TKIs) has significantly extended the survival time of cancer patients, and thus widely used in clinical practice. However, the associat

COVID-19-Related Long-Term Taste Impairment: Symptom Length, Related Taste, Smell Disturbances, and Sample Characteristics.

The COVID-19 infection triggered in some patients a prolonged reduction in the perception of both gustatory and olfactory senses (ageusia and anosmia). These symptoms could be manifested during the first days after the contagion, acting as predictors of COVID-19 infection, and additionally, they could be the only symptoms manifested at all. Clinical resolution of anosmia and ageusia was expected to occur within a few weeks, yet in some cases, patients began to demonstrate COVID-19-related long-term taste impairment (CRLTTI), a condition that can persist for longer than two months, contradictin
