Learning Aggression Through Exposure: The Relationship Between Violence Exposure, Emotion Regulation, and Cyber-Aggression in College Students-A Gender Differences Analysis.

This study investigated the mechanisms linking violence exposure to cyber-aggression among 4,882 Chinese college students (aged 18-24, M = 19.59; 51.7% male, 48.3% female), integrating the general aggression model and emotion regulation theory. We tested whether negative rumination statistically mediated the violence exposure-cyber-aggression relationship and whether cognitive reappraisal and gender moderated these associations. Violence exposure was associated with cyber-aggression (β = .101, 95% CI [0.090, 0.112]), with negative rumination partially accounting for this association (indirect

Aggression as psychiatric side effect of newer AEDs in patients with epilepsy: Cross-sectional study based on Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire.

PURPOSE: Aggression-irritability is the most commonly encountered antiepileptic-drug-induced psychiatric adverse effects. In this cross-sectional study, we tried to assess antiepileptic-drug-induced aggression in patients with epilepsy (PWE) with a standardized rating scale. METHODS: Two hundred sixty-six consecutive outpatients receiving treatment for epilepsy with antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) were initially examined, and the effects of the investigated drugs in regard to aggression were investigated using the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire (BAQ). We compared BAQ scores as a function of a

The Overt Aggression Scale Modified (OAS-M) for clinical trials targeting impulsive aggression and intermittent explosive disorder: Validity, reliability, and correlates.

While aggressive behavior is common, and a disorder of impulsive aggression has been defined in the DSM-5 (Intermittent Explosive Disorder: IED), there are no currently FDA approved interventions to reduce these behaviors. One obstacle to the development of interventions to treat aggression is the paucity of psychometrically valid measures to assess aggressive behavior in the context of clinical trials, especially those in the outpatients setting. While there are many assessment of trait aggression, very few attempt to assess current aggressive behavior over time and/or in individuals not in a

Perceived maternal control and support: effects on hostile biased social information processing and aggression among clinic-referred children with high aggression.

Based on a sample of 89 aggressive clinic-referred children, aged between 9 and 11 years, a longitudinal study of 1-year duration was conducted to examine (a) whether the children's perception of control and support of their mothers' to them predicted their hostile attribution of intent and hostile response selection, and (b) whether these hostile biased social cognitions mediated the relationships between their perceived maternal behaviours and their aggression. Participants completed a questionnaire covering both the perceived maternal control and support. One year later, their hostile attri

Hunger states modulate aggression via opposing dopamine pathways.

Hunger drives aggression, making animals "hangry". Yet the underlying neural mechanism is unclear. Here, we identified a "hangry neuron" in the mushroom body of Drosophila that transforms hunger states into aggression intensity. This transformation is graded and nutrient-specific, precisely coupling internal needs to aggressive actions. Dopaminergic inputs to the hangry neuron play a critical role in this process by conveying the information about hunger states, and by bidirectionally modulating hangry neuron's excitability via Dop1R1 and Dop1R2 receptors, which activate intracellular cAMP and

Psychopathy facets, perceived power, and forms of aggression.

Despite research indicating that exerting dominance and control is characteristic of psychopathy, no research has examined the role that feelings of and desire for power plays in psychopathy-related aggression. Borrowing from various literatures and novel conceptualizations, we investigated the contributions of feeling powerful and/or desiring power and distinct psychopathy facets in explaining aggression manifested in different forms (i.e., physical, verbal, indirect) across 4 samples. Results from regression analyses within each sample and a meta-analysis across the samples indicated that th

Childhood Maltreatment, Personality Pathology, and Intimate Partner Aggression.

The goal of the current study was to examine the early childhood roots of adult personality pathology and intimate partner aggression in later life. Childhood maltreatment is associated with perpetration of intimate partner aggression (IPA) in adulthood, although the effect is generally only small to moderate in size. Childhood maltreatment is also linked with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) personality disorders (PDs) in adulthood, which in turn are correlated with IPA in adult romantic relationships. This suggests that one pathway by which childhood maltreatme

Temporal stability of relational aggression profiles in adolescents.

The current study explored the temporal stability in relational aggressor's profiles over a 6-month period. Data were gathered at two time points from a sample of 2207 Greek junior high school students (52.8% females) aged between 13 and 16 (M = 14.04, SD = 0.81) years. This study also considered the role of callous-unemotional traits and hostile attribution bias in predicting profile membership. Results of latent profile and latent transition analyses revealed three distinct relational aggression profiles (i.e., low relational aggression, moderate relational aggression/high reactive indirect

School Refusal Behavior and Aggression in Spanish Adolescents.

In order to reduce school attendance problems and aggressive behavior, it is essential to determine the relationship between both variables. The aim of this study was twofold: (1) to examine the mean differences in scores on aggression, based on school refusal behavior, and (2) to analyze the predictive capacity of high scores on aggression, based on school refusal behavior factors. The sample consisted of 1455 Spanish secondary school students, aged 13-17 (M = 14.85; SD = 1.56). The School Refusal Assessment Scale-Revised (I. Avoidance of negative affectivity, II. Psychopathy and Aggression: The Role of Emotion Dysregulation.

The importance of psychopathy in the forensic and criminal justice domains is largely due to its robust associations with aggression and violent behavior. Hence, investigators have increasingly been interested in elucidating potential mechanisms linking psychopathy and aggression. Recent research highlighted previously overlooked associations between psychopathy and difficulties in emotion regulation, the process responsible for monitoring, evaluating, and managing one's emotional experience, as well as for guiding behavior under intense emotional arousal. Yet, it remains unclear whether emoti

Multisensory Logic of Infant-Directed Aggression by Males.

Newborn mice emit signals that promote parenting from mothers and fathers but trigger aggressive responses from virgin males. Although pup-directed attacks by males require vomeronasal function, the specific infant cues that elicit this behavior are unknown. We developed a behavioral paradigm based on reconstituted pup cues and showed that discrete infant morphological features combined with salivary chemosignals elicit robust male aggression. Seven vomeronasal receptors were identified based on infant-mediated activity, and the involvement of two receptors, Vmn2r65 and Vmn2r88, in infant-dire

Household Food Insecurity and Parent-to-Child Aggression.

Nearly 13 million children in the United States live in households struggling with food insecurity. Although biosocial theories suggest a strong link between the lack of food and child maltreatment, and a handful of studies have established a correlation between nutritional deficits and family violence, it is unclear if household food insecurity itself is associated with physical and psychological child abuse apart from other issues related to poverty. The current study examines this possibility by analyzing data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study ( n = 2,330). Sixteen percent

Spoils division rules shape aggression between natural groups.

Violent intergroup conflicts cause widespread harm; yet, throughout human history, destructive hostilities occur time and time again1,2. Benefits that are obtainable by victorious parties include territorial expansion, deterrence and ascendency in between-group resource competition3-6. Many of these are non-excludable goods that are available to all group members, whereas participation entails substantial individual risks and costs. Thus, a collective action problem emerges, raising the question why individuals participate in such campaigns at all7-9. Distinguishing offensive and defensive int

Mechanisms Linking Interparental Aggression to Child Dental Caries.

Research has garnered support for a systemic view of factors affecting child dental caries that accounts for the influence of social factors such as the family environment. Our previous work has demonstrated the association between mother-to-father emotional aggression and child caries. The present study builds on these results by evaluating pathways that might explain this relation. Families (n = 135) completed a multimethod assessment of mother-to-father emotional aggression, child caries, and several hypothesized mediators (i.e., child cariogenic snack and drink intake, child internalizing

Antipsychotics for aggression in adults: A meta-analysis.

Aggressive behavior complicates the presentation of many psychiatric illnesses, and is associated with significant morbidity. Antipsychotic medications are used to treat this symptom dimension across multiple diagnoses. In this meta-analysis we sought to identify the effect size of antipsychotic medications for the treatment of reactive-impulsive aggression in adults, and identify differences across underlying diagnosis and specific agent. A search was conducted of four databases, MEDLINE, PsychINFO, Embase and the Cochrane Library to end date of August 10, 2016. The search terms included "agg

[Trait-aggression and suicide of Vincent van Gogh].

Although in recent decades the literature has paid special attention to Vincent van Gogh's life, work and illness, there has still not been an examination of the connections between his trait aggression and his suicide. The present study traces, in the light of this trait aggression, the predictive factors that can be observed on the path leading to the artist's suicide. Biographical documents, case history data, as well as letters and the findings of earlier research have been used in the course of the analysis. Among the distal suicide risk factors we find a positive family anamnesis, childh

Testosterone and explosive aggression in autism spectrum disorders.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a set of heterogeneous neurodevelopmental conditions, characterized by early-onset difficulties in social communication and unusually restricted, repetitive behavior and interests. Children with ASD have a high rate of irritability and aggressive symptoms which have significant impact on their lives, families and society. The etiology of aggression in humans is likely complex and includes both biological and behavioral causes. Biological approaches have focused on hormones and neurotransmitters that are hypothesized to contribute to the etiology and clinical
