Generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAgP) is a distinct type of periodontal disease associated with considerably more rapid periodontal tissue destruction than chronic periodontitis. This study presents the 5-year follow-up of a patient with GAgP. A 29-year-old man reported experiencing increasing gingival recession. He was treated using cause-related therapy, provisional splints, and flap surgery combined with allograft grafting and was followed up for 5 years. This case study shows that elimination of infectious microorganisms and meticulous long-term maintenance provide an effective treat

Aggressive periodontitis is a rare, severe and rapidly progressing periodontal disease. Early diagnosis is of utmost importance for establishing treatment in order to stop periodontal destruction and prevent tooth loss. The aim of this study is to describe the occurrence of aggressive periodontitis in patients at a Dental School in Brazil by means of a cross-sectional study. First, records from patients aged 15-36 years were consecutively scrutinized. Patients should not have systemic diseases. The search went up to 383 valid records. By means of periapical radiographs, the distance between th

OBJECTIVE: Susceptibility to and severity of periodontal disease is influenced by gene polymorphisms related to the immune response. Co-stimulatory molecules, such as CD28 and CTLA-4, are critical in the development of such responses. Our hypothesis is that polymorphisms in genes that code for these molecules may be associated with periodontitis. The aim of the study was to investigate the association between +17 (T/C) CD28 and +49 (A/G) CTLA-4 gene polymorphisms and periodontitis in Brazilians.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Genomic DNA was obtained from oral swabs of 424 individuals categorized int

AIM: The aim of this study was to determine the survival rates of questionable and hopeless teeth in patients with aggressive periodontitis (AgP) and chronic periodontitis (CP) during 15 years of supportive periodontal therapy (SPT).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-four AgP and 34 CP patients (SPT≥10 years) with bone loss of ≥50% at ≥2 teeth were consecutively recruited. Bone loss was measured on digitized radiographs and teeth were categorized as "questionable" (≥50 to <70% bone loss) or as "hopeless" (≥70%). Progression in pocket probing depths (PPD) during SPT, tooth loss and reasons for ext

BACKGROUND: Chronic periodontitis (CP) and aggressive periodontitis (AP) are inflammatory diseases and the main cause of dental loss in adults. We aimed to investigate the expression of adhesion molecules and the source of proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines in circulating mononuclear cells from patients with CP and AP.
METHODS: Peripheral blood mononuclear cells from healthy controls and CP or AP patients were collected. The expression of the cell adhesion molecules CD11a and CD11b, and the cellular sources of interleukin (IL)-4, IL-10, IL-12, interferon-γ, and tumor necrosis fac

BACKGROUND: Microarray analysis of local and peripheral cells in subjects with immune-inflammatory diseases may identify candidate genes associated with these diseases. The present study identified differentially expressed genes in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from subjects with untreated localized aggressive periodontitis (LAgP) or generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAgP). Differentially expressed genes were validated in groups of subjects with LAgP, GAgP, juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), or rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and controls.
METHODS: Candidate genes were identified

BACKGROUND: We observed that a significant proportion of patients with periodontitis have elevated serum levels of beta2-glycoprotein-I-dependent anti-cardiolipin (anti-CL). These prothrombotic autoantibodies, commonly found to be elevated in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and the antiphospholipid syndrome, are associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, such as fetal involution, prematurity, and low birth weight, and with cardiovascular sequelae, such as atherosclerosis, stroke, and myocardial infarction. Anti-CL is known to promote vascular inflammation and thrombosis.

INTRODUCTION: Periodontitis-associated microbiotas differ in regions around the world and vary with a variety of factors. This suggests that each country must establish its own dental microbiobiotic profile in order to formulate adequate prevention measures and more specific treatments.
OBJECTIVE: The prevalence and proportions of the following microorganisms were investigated: Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Prevotella intermedia/Prevotella nigrescens, Eikenella corrodens, Campylobacter rectus, Micromonas micros, Fusobacterium spp, Dialis

BACKGROUND: Although the use of systemic antibiotics has been studied in patients with generalized aggressive periodontitis (formerly rapidly progressive periodontitis), the use of adjunctive tetracycline fibers in these patients has not been reported. The purpose of the present study was to compare the clinical response of local versus systemic antibiotic treatment as adjuncts to scaling and root planing in patients with GAgP.
METHODS: After initial therapy and full-mouth scaling and root planing (SRP), 30 patients were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 antibiotic treatment groups. Probing depth (

A rare case of a periodontally induced endodontic lesion in a systemically healthy subject of 28 years is described. The patient, having presented with severe attachment loss on the palatal and distal aspects of his maxillary right second premolar, was diagnosed with localized aggressive periodontitis. He had never received periodontal treatment. The tooth was nonvital and showed all signs of symptomatic apical periodontitis. It was also free of any restoration. All clinical findings clearly suggested that the endodontic problem was caused by the aggressive periodontal disease. Bacteriologic s

OBJECTIVE: Chronic periodontitis (CP), aggressive periodontitis (AP), and peri-implantitis (PI) are chronic inflammatory diseases. Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-a) is an effective immune inflammatory mediator. Several studies have been conducted to explore the association between the TNF-α (G-308A) polymorphism and susceptibility to CP, AP, and PI. Our objective was to examine whether the TNF-α (G-308A) polymorphism is related to these diseases.
METHODS: We conducted a meta-analysis to investigate the association between the TNF-α (G-308A) polymorphism and CP, AP, and PI. The PubMed, Embase, C

An unusual case of spontaneous and rapidly destructive lesions involving the periodontal structures is described in a 54 year old, bi-sexual patients suspected of having AIDS. Concomitant with the periodontal breakdown, the patient developed a severe case of Herpes Zoster involving the area of the face innervated by the 5th cranial nerve. The dermal lesions involved the face, nose, eyes and scalp. Similar lesions were noted on the gingival and palatal mucosa on the same side of the jaw as the skin lesions. The differences between this type of periodontal destruction and more conventional forms
