Alcohol drinking and mammary cancer: Pathogenesis and potential dietary preventive alternatives.

Alcohol consumption is associated with an increased risk of breast cancer, increasing linearly even with a moderate consumption and irrespectively of the type of alcoholic beverage. It shows no dependency from other risk factors like menopausal status, oral contraceptives, hormone replacement therapy, or genetic history of breast cancer. The precise mechanism for the effect of drinking alcohol in mammary cancer promotion is still far from being established. Studies by our laboratory suggest that acetaldehyde produced in situ and accumulated in mammary tissue because of poor detoxicating mechan

Alcohol consumption and binge drinking in young adult childhood cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND: This study compared frequency of alcohol consumption and binge drinking between young adult childhood cancer survivors and the general population in Switzerland, and assessed its socio-demographic and clinical determinants. PROCEDURE: Childhood cancer survivors aged <16 years when diagnosed 1976-2003, who had survived >5 years and were currently aged 20-40 years received a postal questionnaire. Reported frequency of alcohol use and of binge drinking were compared to the Swiss Health Survey, a representative general population survey. Determinants of frequent alcohol consumption an

Schedule-induced alcohol drinking: non-selective effects of acamprosate and naltrexone.

Acamprosate and naltrexone are therapeutically effective drugs that promote abstinence and prevent drinking relapse among alcohol-dependent patients, and dose-dependently decrease alcohol self-administration in animals. The purpose of this experiment was to investigate the behavioral specificity of acamprosate and naltrexone treatment in mice on alcohol drinking elicited in a schedule-induced polydipsia (SIP) task. Food-deprived male C57BL/6J (B6) mice were divided into three groups assigned to a 5% alcohol SIP, water SIP, or a 1-hour limited access regulatory water drinking task. Injections (

Couples' drinking patterns, intimate partner violence, and alcohol-related partnership problems.

PURPOSE: Past research has revealed a strong correspondence between alcohol use and family dysfunction (e.g., Straus and Gelles in 1986 and 1990). Unfortunately, much of this research has relied on reports from only one family member. METHODS: Here, we present the results from a recent, nationwide study of alcohol-consumption patterns, alcohol-related partnership problems, and intimate partner violence (IPV) based on reports from both romantic partners of 1,615 married and cohabiting couples. RESULTS: Using the "drinking partnerships" construct developed by Roberts and Leonard in 1997, we fo

Glycyl-L-glutamine injected centrally suppresses alcohol drinking in P rats.

Recent reports show that central beta-endorphin (1-31) injection augments the volitional intake of alcohol. Correspondingly, alcohol drinking stimulates beta-endorphin (1-31) release from the hypothalamus of the rat. Glycyl-l-glutamine (Gly-Gln) is produced in beta-endorphin-containing neurons and is co-released with beta-endorphin(1-31) and other processing products. Because Gly-Gln is apparently an endogenous antagonist of beta-endorphin(1-31) in several systems, the present study was designed to investigate the hypothesis that Gly-Gln injected i.c.v. would alter voluntary alcohol drinking i

[Congener analysis in a drinking trial with unusually high alcohol content].

The aforementioned case proves very convincingly that a very high dose of alcohol consumed within a short time span can be absorbed completely within 2 hours. Numerical models based on low to moderate alcohol consumption were lower than expected in cases of severe alcohol intake. The claim of alcohol consumption after an event can best be verified by means of a drinking experiment under intensive medical supervision.

[The public health political status of alcohol drinking in West Germany].

During the last years the per-capita-consumption of pure alcohol in the Federal Republic of Germany is slightly decreasing. In 1986 every person consumed an average of 11.5 litres of pure alcohol (146.4 litres of beer, 23.3 litres of wine and 6.1 litres of spirits). The amount of the alcohol addicts must be estimated at about 1.5 to 1.8 million people. Among the alcohol-abusers and alcohol-addicts the rate of mortality, caused by accidents, physical diseases and suicides is many times higher than among the non-drinking or rarely drinking population. Alcoholism liver-cirrhosis and pancreatitis

Mixing an energy drink with an alcoholic beverage increases motivation for more alcohol in college students.

BACKGROUND: There has been a dramatic rise in the consumption of alcohol mixed with energy drinks (AmEDs) in social drinkers. It has been suggested that AmED beverages might lead individuals to drink greater quantities of alcohol. This experiment was designed to investigate whether the consumption of AmEDs would alter alcohol priming (i.e., increasing ratings of wanting another drink) compared with alcohol alone. METHODS: Participants (n = 80) of equal gender attended 1 session where they were randomly assigned to receive 1 of 4 doses (0.91 ml/kg vodka, 1.82 ml/kg energy drink, 0.91 ml/kg vod

Why do patients with chronic hepatitis C drink alcohol? An examination of pain, depression and drinking motives.

Alcohol consumption in the setting of chronic HCV is associated with accelerated progression towards cirrhosis, increased risk of hepatocellular carcinoma and higher mortality. This analysis contextualizes how sociodemographic factors, chronic pain and depression relate to the motivations of individuals with chronic HCV to consume alcohol. We conducted a secondary analysis of baseline data from the Hep ART trial of behavioural interventions on alcohol use among patients with HCV. Alcohol consumption was measured using the Drinking Motives Questionnaire and a novel 6-item measure of pain-relate

Daily-Level Drinking Motives as Predictors of Transdermal Alcohol Concentration and Alcohol-Induced Blackouts Among Young Adults.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use is necessary-but not sufficient-for understanding why individuals experience an alcohol-induced blackout (AIB). Drinking motives are one of the most proximal risk factors for alcohol use. This study conducts a comprehensive within-person examination of AIBs predicted by prospective daily reports of drinking motives and alcohol use measured using a transdermal alcohol concentration (TAC) biosensor. METHODS: Participants were young adults who engaged in risky drinking and experienced at least 1 AIB in the past 3-months (N = 169, Mage = 20.8, 53% female, 87% White, 10% Hi

Beyond Drinking-Age Thresholds: Alcohol Misuse and Alcohol-Related Harms Among University Students in Trinidad and Tobago.

Objective This study aimed to examine the prevalence and patterns of alcohol use and misuse among undergraduate students aged 18-25 years in Trinidad and Tobago and to assess whether students younger than 21 years were more likely to report alcohol misuse and alcohol-related harms. Methods A quantitative cross-sectional design was used, involving a secondary analysis of two harmonized surveys conducted at the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) and The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine (UWI). The analytic sample included 800 undergraduate students aged 18-25 years, who were sele

[Digital Interventions for Alcohol-Related Problems: From Hazardous and Harmful Drinking to Alcohol Use Disorder and Dependence].

This article provides an overview of digital interventions for alcohol-related problems, ranging from hazardous and harmful drinking to alcohol use disorder and dependence. When examining the evidence from randomized controlled trials, it is clear that the efficacy of digital interventions has been sufficiently demonstrated. However, questions remain whether this efficacy reaches individuals with alcohol-related problems. Proving their effectiveness and achieving an impact in real-world settings are likely to be the highest-priority challenges.

Neural alcohol cue reactivity as a risk factor for future drinking in youth with limited alcohol exposure.

BACKGROUND: Heightened alcohol cue reactivity is associated with alcohol problems and poor alcohol use disorder outcomes. Theory suggests that this reflects a conditioned response, whereby cues repeatedly paired with chronic alcohol use become more salient. However, few studies have investigated the relative emergence of heightened alcohol cue reactivity. It is possible that this response occurs very early in individual drinking trajectories and may play a role in shaping future alcohol use behavior. METHODS: We tested this hypothesis in a sample of youth (n = 159; ages 16-19) with limited li

Mediterranean Alcohol-Drinking Pattern and Alcohol-Related Cancer Incidence in the "Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra" (SUN) Cohort.

Background/Objectives: Since 1988, the IARC has classified alcohol as a type 1 carcinogen, causally linked to seven types of cancer (oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, colorectum, liver and breast carcinomas). Several agencies, such as the WHO and the IARC, hold that there is a direct monotonic association between any gram of alcohol consumed and the risk of cancer, regardless of the drinking pattern. On the other hand, an expanding body of evidence indicates that drinking pattern may substantially modify the effect of alcohol consumption. The Mediterranean alcohol-drinking pattern (MADP

Drinking behavior patterns may be associated with persistent depressive symptoms after alcohol abstinence in alcohol use disorder.

AIM: This study examined the association between drinking behavior patterns and depressive symptoms after alcohol abstinence in patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD). METHOD: We recruited 102 AUD inpatients with baseline depressive symptoms, indicated by scores ≥6 on the Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology Self-Report Japanese Version (QIDS-SR-J) pre-detoxification. Post-4-week abstinence, remission was defined as QIDS-SR-J scores <6. Patients were classified into remitted (n = 51) and persistent (n = 51) groups. Comparative analyses were conducted using patient profiles and the D

Alcohol hangover versus dehydration revisited: The effect of drinking water to prevent or alleviate the alcohol hangover.

The alcohol hangover is a combination of negative mental and physical symptoms which can be experienced after a single episode of alcohol consumption, starting when blood alcohol concentration (BAC) approaches zero. A popular theory suggests that dehydration is the primary cause of alcohol hangover and that the consumption of water could alleviate hangover symptoms. Here, the current evidence on the relationship between hangover severity, thirst, and water consumption is summarized. The positive correlations of the amount of water consumed with both hangover severity and thirst suggest that bo

Italian Guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders: detecting alcohol drinking during pregnancy.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) is an encompassing term used to describe a range of afflictions brought about by the consumption of alcohol during gestation. The detrimental effects primarily manifest in the central nervous system, growth, and distinctive facial features. Given that there are no known treatments for FASD, the meticulous screening for this condition in the earliest stages of pregnancy bears immense significance, ensuring the avoidance of the grievous consequences stemming from exposure to alcohol in utero. Screening measures for FASD encompass the assessment of alcohol

A Western diet with alcohol in drinking water recapitulates features of alcohol-associated liver disease in mice.

BACKGROUND: Mouse models of alcohol-associated liver disease vary greatly in their ease of implementation and the pathology they produce. Effects range from steatosis and mild inflammation with the Lieber-DeCarli liquid diet to severe inflammation, fibrosis, and pyroptosis seen with the Tsukamoto-French intragastric feeding model. Implementation of all of these models is limited by the labor-intensive nature of the protocols and the specialized skills necessary for successful intragastric feeding. We thus sought to develop a new model to reproduce features of alcohol-induced inflammation and f
