The four Es of problem gambling: a psychological measure of risk.

A focus group of Reno area Gamblers Anonymous members identified four psychological traits contributing to risk for problem gambling, including: Escape, Esteem, Excess and Excitement. A panel of four experts authored 240 Likert-type items to measure these traits. By design, none of the items explicitly referred to gambling activities. Study 1 narrowed the field of useful items by employing a quasi-experimental design which compared the answers of Reno area Gamblers Anonymous members (N = 39) to a control sample (N = 34). Admitting powerlessness empowers recovery from substance use disorder: a conceptual model.

Some individuals use substances to cope with their post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms. The emotional, behavioral, and spiritual experience of both their post-traumatic stress disorder and substance use disorder is manifested in a sense of powerlessness, which is caused by the inability to stop using despite negative consequences related to continued use. Thus, powerlessness is a prominent factor in recovery from substance use disorder. The aims of the present theoretical article were to (a) present the consequences of the co-morbid post-traumatic stress disorder and substance use disorder

A comparison of recovery benefits associated with participation in SMART Recovery, AA, both SMART and AA, or neither, following a new alcohol use disorder recovery attempt.

BACKGROUND: Self-Management and Recovery Training (SMART Recovery or "SMART") is an internationally known "second-wave" addiction recovery mutual-help organization that has grown over several decades. Despite this, little is known empirically about who uses SMART and how they fare on important alcohol-specific outcomes over time relative to individuals using more established options such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), or indeed those who utilize both SMART and AA, or neither. Greater knowledge could deepen understanding of the clinical and public utility of SMART in its own right and inform cli

Coffee, Alcohol, and Artificial Sweeteners Have Temporal Associations with Gastrointestinal Symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Various dietary strategies for managing irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) target mechanisms such as brain-gut interactions, osmotic actions, microbial gas production, and local immune activity. These pathophysiological mechanisms are diverse, making it unclear which foods trigger IBS symptoms for a substantial proportion of patients. AIM: To identify associations between foods and gastrointestinal symptoms. METHODS: From the mySymptoms smartphone app, we collected anonymized diaries of food intake and symptoms (abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloating, and gas). We selected diaries that w

An analysis of predictors for heavy alcohol drinking using nationally representative survey data in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Predictors of heavy or moderate alcohol drinking behavior have not been investigated using recent nationally representative survey data in Japan. This study investigated the effects of the predictors of heavy and moderate alcohol drinking in Japan using nationally representative survey data. METHODS: Anonymous data from the 2013 Comprehensive Survey of Living Conditions in Japan were used to compare the predictors of heavy and moderate drinkers with those who abstain. Alcohol Use, Demographics and Mental Health of Women Using a Digital Peer Support Program.

BACKGROUND: Risky alcohol use is rising among some groups of women. This trend is concerning given their vulnerability to alcohol-related harm arising from biological and socio-cultural factors. Stigma, caregiving responsibilities, and limited childcare often reduce access to traditional treatment. Concurrently, population-wide increases in psychological distress are driving demand for support services. Digital interventions for alcohol use like the Daybreak app may offer accessible, anonymous early intervention, helping to overcome barriers and meet unmet needs. METHODS: Data were analysed f

Bringing it home: community survey of HIV risks to primary sex partners of men and women in alcohol-serving establishments in Cape Town, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Concurrent sexual relationships facilitate the spread of HIV infection, and sex with non-primary partners may pose particularly high risks for HIV transmission to primary partners. OBJECTIVE: We examined the sexual and alcohol-related risks associated with sex partners outside of primary relationships among South African men and women in informal drinking establishments. METHODS: Men (n=4959) and women (n=2367) with primary sex partners residing in a Xhosa-speaking South African township completed anonymous surveys. Risk factors for self-reported alcohol consumption during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is the most common preventable cause of impaired fetal development. The amount of alcohol consumed by expectant mothers varies by country. Similarly lacking are the data regarding pregnant women's awareness of the negative consequences of alcohol use during pregnancy. METHODS: The study comprised women who gave birth at the 2nd Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics between July 1, 2023, and December
