Antihyperglycemic and Antioxidant Effects of Salacia reticulata and Caralluma tuberculata in Alloxan-Induced Diabetic Female Rats.

Objective: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major metabolic disorder associated with hyper-glycemia and oxidative stress. Traditional medicinal plants remain important sources of bioactive compounds with potential antidiabetic activity. Salacia reticulata and Caralluma tuberculata are two important medicinal plants that have been reported to have antidiabetic effects. The growing burden of type 2 diabetes and the need for therapies that address both hyperglycemia and oxidative stress underscore the necessity to investigate these two medicinal plants. Therefore, the current study evaluated the antih

Rutin ameliorates metabolic acidosis and fibrosis in alloxan induced diabetic nephropathy and cardiomyopathy in experimental rats.

Diabetic nephropathy and cardiomyopathy are two major causes of mortality among patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). Since current diabetic medications are associated with various side effects, the naturally occurring plant-derived compounds are in demand. Bioflavonoids originating from vegetables and medicinal plants have beneficial effects on diabetes by improving glycemic control, lipid metabolism, and anti-oxidant status. The present study is focused on the effect of rutin against alloxan induced diabetic nephropathy and cardiomyopathy. Male albino Wistar rats were divided into four group

INFLUENCE OF TESTOSTERONE ON MORPHOLOGICAL CHANGES IN PANCREATIC ISLETS AND LIVER TISSUE OF RATS WITH ALLOXAN-INDUCED DIABETES.

The role of exogenous testosterone (methyltrienolone) in the repair of damaged pancreatic islet and liver cells during alloxan diabetes was studied. Modeling of diabetes was performed through single intraperitoneal injection of Alloxan, with the dose 2 mg per 10 g of body weight. Pancreatic and liver tissues were investigated microscopically using 3-4 µm slices embedded in paraffin and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Software Adobe Photoshop was used to measure the areas of pancreatic islets as well as areas of necrotic foci in these islets of animals with Alloxan-induced experimental diab

Cystometric changes in alloxan diabetic rats: evidence for functional and structural correlates of diabetic autonomic neuropathy.

Autonomic neuropathy and urinary bladder function were compared in Sprague-Dawley rats with alloxan-diabetes of 3 months duration, rats fed sucrose for 8 weeks, and rats examined 8 weeks after pelvic nerve surgical axotomy; normal age-matched rats were used as controls. All experimental interventions induced bladder hypertrophy with increased bladder weight. In diabetic and sucrose-fed animals, water intake and urinary output increased. Cystometric recordings of normal rats in vivo showed rhythmic contractions (1.25 +/- 0.25 contr/min) with threshold volume for micturition reflex at 0.51 +/- 0

Studies on cataractogenesis in humans and in rats with alloxan-induced diabetes. II. Histochemical evaluation of lenticular enzymes.

The effect of cataractogenesis on the behavior of some enzymes involved in glucose metabolism was examined histochemically both in human lenses and in rat lenses from rats with alloxan-induced diabetes. Several modifications in the currently available techniques were made in order to localize glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, aldose reductase, sorbitol dehydrogenase, hexokinase and ketohexokinase in ocular lens. Human cataractous lenses showed a precipitous drop in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity, whereas the lenticular tissues of alloxan-treated rats showed a gradual decrease of t

Plasma protein determination as a clinical probe for liver injury in rats induced by thioacetamide, alloxan or ixoten.

As a result of traumata, cancer or chemical poisoning the level of acute-phase proteins released by the liver undergoes a significant change which can be measured by two-dimensional immunoelectrophoresis. To investigate whether inflammatory reactions following chemical poisoning, tissue necrosis or other treatments result in an uniform change of the plasma protein profile, we examined quantitatively the change in plasma protein profile in the following model situations: 1) alloxan-induced diabetes in rats, 2) thioacetamide-induced liver cirrhosis and 3) ixoten-induced blocking of DNA synthesis

Methanolic Extract of Myrsine africana Leaf Ameliorates Hyperglycemia and Dyslipidemia in Alloxan-Induced Diabetic Albino Mice.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus is one of the leading public health problems globally, and its prevalence is increasing in Ethiopia. The current drugs for people with diabetes are costly, less effective, and less safe with a challenging administration method. Thus, globally, the need for alternative herbal antidiabetic medicines is increasing. In the previous studies, antioxidant activities have been seen in crude extracts of M. africana leaves, which is an auspicious sign of antidiabetic property. Accordingly, this study has evaluated the antidiabetic and antidyslipidemic activities of methanol

Xanthine Oxidase Inhibitor Allopurinol Prevents Oxidative Stress-Mediated Atrial Remodeling in Alloxan-Induced Diabetes Mellitus Rabbits.

BACKGROUND: There are several mechanisms, including inflammation, oxidative stress and abnormal calcium homeostasis, involved in the pathogenesis of atrial fibrillation. In diabetes mellitus (DM), increased oxidative stress may be attributable to higher xanthine oxidase activity. In this study, we examined the relationship between oxidative stress and atrial electrical and structural remodeling, and calcium handling abnormalities, and the potential beneficial effects of the xanthine oxidase inhibitor allopurinol upon these pathological changes. METHODS AND RESULTS: Ninety rabbits were randoml
