Exploring Gut Microbe-Host Genes in Postpartum Depression: Mendelian Randomization and Transcriptomic Analysis.

PURPOSE: To suggest a potential causal role of gut microbiota in Postpartum depression (PPD) and identify susceptible microbiota-host genes. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study was carried out with the genome-wide association studies (GWAS) data of 196 gut microbial taxa and PPD. Causal relationships were evaluated with inverse variance weighted (IVW), MR‒Egger, weighted mode, and weighted median approaches. Cochran's Q test, the MR‒Egger intercept test, the MR-PRESSO test, and leave-one-out analysis were performed for assessing pleiotropy and heterogeneity

Genomic and phenotypic characterization of 26 novel marine bacterial strains with relevant biogeochemical roles and widespread presence across the global ocean.

Prokaryotes dominate global oceans and shape biogeochemical cycles, yet most taxa remain uncultured and uncharacterized as of today. Here we present the characterization of 26 novel marine bacterial strains from a large isolate collection obtained from Blanes Bay (NW Mediterranean) microcosm experiments made in the four seasons. Morphological, cultural, biochemical, physiological, nutritional, genomic, and phylogenomic analyses were used to characterize and phylogenetically place the novel isolates. The strains represent 23 novel bacterial species and six novel genera: three novel species pert

Immunotherapy-Mediated Modulation of the Gut Microbiota in Multiple Sclerosis: The Effects of High-Efficacy (Cladribine) and Moderate-Efficacy (Interferon Beta-1a) Treatments.

Interactions between the gut microbiota, immune system, and brain seem to be involved in the pathogenesis and disease activity of multiple sclerosis (MS). Some MS disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) have been shown to alter the microbiota, but whether this is related to their specific mode of action or indirectly related to their immune-modulatory effect is unknown. In this longitudinal study, we characterized the effects of two DMTs on the microbiota under similar conditions and populations: the injectable, moderate-efficacy DMT interferon beta-1a (INFβ-1a) and the oral, high-efficacy DMT clad

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease enhances the beneficial effect of renal denervation on gut microbiota aberrations in rats with heart failure.

BACKGROUND: Renal denervation (RDN) contributes to improving cardiac function by ameliorating aberrations of the gut microbiota, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is associated with gut microbiota dysbiosis and is critically involved in the development of heart failure (HF). It is unclear whether the beneficial effect of RDN on gut microbiota in HF can be affected by NAFLD and whether this effect changes with the severity of NAFLD. METHODS: HF Sprague Dawley rats induced by transverse aortic constriction were fed a high-fat-fructose diet and underwent RDN, and sequencing of 16S rR

Carbon fate and potential carbon metabolism effects during in-situ cyanobacterial inhibition by artemisinin sustained-release algaecides.

Carbon pools and microbial carbon metabolism can be significantly altered due to the diverse organic matter properties and low pH characteristics of artemisinin sustained-release algaecides (ASAs). These effects have still not been systematically studied, leading to uncertainty in the application of ASAs for cyanobacterial management in natural waters. This study assessed the effects of ASAs on carbon fate, carbon metabolism and potential ecological impacts during in-situ cyanobacterial inhibition. In the initial phase of ASAs-induced cyanobacterial inhibition (2-10 days), the carbon pool unde

Association between gut microbiota and postpartum depression: A bidirectional Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUNDS: Empirical investigations have shown an association between gut microbiota and postpartum depression (PPD); nevertheless, the precise cause-and-effect relationship between these two variables remains ambiguous. This research aimed to examine the possible reciprocal causal relationship between the gut microbiota and PPD. METHODS: In this work, we used Mendelian randomization (MR) to analyze the relationship between the gut microbiota (n = 18,340) and PPD (n = 67,205). We obtained the relevant SNPs from publicly accessible genome-wide association studies (GWAS). The SNP estimations

Is the Urinary and Gut Microbiome Associated With Bladder Cancer?

BACKGROUND: Microbiome dysbiosis plays a role in the pathogenesis of many urological diseases, including bladder cancer (BC). The aim of the study was to compare the urinary and gut microbiota of patients with BC with a healthy control (HC) group. METHODS: The study group included patients hospitalized in 2020 to 2021 with diagnosed BC and HC. Prior to the transurethral resection of bladder tumor, patients collected their urine and stool which was then subjected to 16S rRNA gene sequencing. RESULTS: Overall, 25 patients were enrolled in the study: 18 in the BC group and 7 in the HC group. An

Cross regulation in a three-component cell envelope stress signaling system of Brucella.

A multi-layered structure known as the cell envelope separates the controlled interior of bacterial cells from a fluctuating physical and chemical environment. The transcription of genes that determine cell envelope structure and function is commonly regulated by two-component signaling systems (TCS), comprising a sensor histidine kinase and a cognate response regulator. To identify TCS genes that contribute to cell envelope function in the intracellular mammalian pathogen, Brucella ovis, we subjected a collection of non-essential TCS deletion mutants to compounds that disrupt cell membranes a

Root exudates and rhizosphere soil bacterial relationships of Nitraria tangutorum are linked to k-strategists bacterial community under salt stress.

When plants are subjected to various biotic and abiotic stresses, the root system responds actively by secreting different types and amounts of bioactive compounds, while affects the structure of rhizosphere soil bacterial community. Therefore, understanding plant-soil-microbial interactions, especially the strength of microbial interactions, mediated by root exudates is essential. A short-term experiment was conducted under drought and salt stress to investigate the interaction between root exudates and Nitraria tangutorum rhizosphere bacterial communities. We found that drought and salt stre

Profile of the skin microbiota in a healthy Chinese population.

The skin microbiota is an inseparable component of the skin barrier structure, which participates in the stabilization or impairment of the barrier function as well as the development of many skin diseases. To characterize the normal skin microbiota and its association with skin sites, age and sex, we recruited 50 volunteers divided into children, adolescents, young adults, middle-aged adults and the elderly. The skin sites consisted of cheeks, volar forearms (representing dry environments) and upper back (representing sebaceous environments). A total of 9 574 365 high-quality sequences of the

Aerobic biodegradation of trichloroethylene and phenol co-contaminants in groundwater by a bacterial community using hydrogen peroxide as the sole oxygen source.

Trichloroethylene (TCE) and phenol were often found together as co-contaminants in the groundwater of industrial contaminated sites. An effective method to remove TCE was aerobic biodegradation by co-metabolism using phenol as growth substrates. However, the aerobic biodegradation process was easily limited by low concentration of dissolved oxygen (DO) in groundwater, and DO was improved by air blast technique with difficulty. This study enriched a bacterial community using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as the sole oxygen source to aerobically degrade TCE by co-metabolism with phenol in groundwater

Culturable psychrotrophic bacterial communities in raw milk and their proteolytic and lipolytic traits.

During cold storage after milk collection, psychrotrophic bacterial populations dominate the microflora, and their extracellular enzymes, mainly proteases and lipases, contribute to the spoilage of dairy products. The diversity, dynamics, and enzymatic traits of culturable psychrotrophs in raw milk from four farms were investigated over a 10-month period. About 20% of the isolates were found to be novel species, indicating that there is still much to be learned about culturable psychrotrophs in raw milk. The psychrotrophic isolates were identified and classified in seven classes. Three classes

Mixed infections, cryptic diversity, and vector-borne pathogens: evidence from Polygenis fleas and Bartonella species.

Coinfections within hosts present opportunities for horizontal gene transfer between strains and competitive interactions between genotypes and thus can be a critical element of the lifestyles of pathogens. Bartonella spp. are Alphaproteobacteria that parasitize mammalian erythrocytes and endothelial cells. Their vectors are thought to be various biting arthropods, such as fleas, ticks, mites, and lice, and they are commonly cited as agents of various emerging diseases. Coinfections by different Bartonella strains and species can be common in mammals, but little is known about specificity and

Candidatus Bartonella antechini: a novel Bartonella species detected in fleas and ticks from the yellow-footed antechinus (Antechinus flavipes), an Australian marsupial.

Bartonella are fastidious, Gram-negative, aerobic bacilli belonging to the Alphaproteobacteria group. In the last ten years, the discovery of new Bartonella species from a variety of mammalian hosts, arthropod vectors and geographical areas has increased. More than 20 species of Bartonella have been identified, of which approximately thirteen are associated with disease in humans and animals. Recently, four novel species of Bartonella were isolated from mammalian hosts in Australia: Bartonella australis from eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus) and Bartonella rattaustraliani, Bartonella

A previously unrecognized step in pentachlorophenol degradation in Sphingobium chlorophenolicum is catalyzed by tetrachlorobenzoquinone reductase (PcpD).

The first step in the pentachlorophenol (PCP) degradation pathway in Sphingobium chlorophenolicum has been believed for more than a decade to be conversion of PCP to tetrachlorohydroquinone. We show here that PCP is actually converted to tetrachlorobenzoquinone, which is subsequently reduced to tetrachlorohydroquinone by PcpD, a protein that had previously been suggested to be a PCP hydroxylase reductase. pcpD is immediately downstream of pcpB, the gene encoding PCP hydroxylase (PCP monooxygenase). Expression of PcpD is induced in the presence of PCP. A mutant strain lacking functional PcpD ha

The genome of Rhizobiales bacteria in predatory ants reveals urease gene functions but no genes for nitrogen fixation.

Gut-associated microbiota of ants include Rhizobiales bacteria with affiliation to the genus Bartonella. These bacteria may enable the ants to fix atmospheric nitrogen, but no genomes have been sequenced yet to test the hypothesis. Sequence reads from a member of the Rhizobiales were identified in the data collected in a genome project of the ant Harpegnathos saltator. We present an analysis of the closed 1.86 Mb genome of the ant-associated bacterium, for which we suggest the species name Candidatus Tokpelaia hoelldoblerii. A phylogenetic analysis reveals a relationship to Bartonella and Bruc

Microbiome Responses of Beef Steers to Rotational Grazing of Toxic Endophyte-Infected Tall Fescue Under Fall Conditions.

Fescue toxicosis results from ingestion of tall fescue infected with the ergot alkaloid (EA)-producing endophyte Epichloë coenophiala. The gastrointestinal microbiota is the first point of interaction with EAs and may be modulated by them. To investigate this, rumen and fecal samples were collected from steers grazing toxic (E+) or non-toxic fescue for 14 days, followed by a pasture switch. Microbial communities were characterized using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing (bacterial V4, archaeal V6-V8 regions). Short-term E+ grazing did not affect alpha diversity in either matrix, but beta diversity

Isolation and Characterization of Pseudooceanicola aestuariicola sp. nov., from Tidal-Flat Sediments.

A novel bacterial strain, designated MF1-13ᵀ, was isolated from tidal-flat sediment collected in Gochang, Republic of Korea. Cells of strain MF1-13ᵀ are Gram-stain-negative, facultatively anaerobic, motile, and short rod-shaped to ovoid, forming pale yellow colonies on marine agar. The strain produces catalase and oxidase. It grows at 25-30 °C (optimum, 30 °C), at pH 6-8.0 (optimum, pH 7.0), and in the presence of 0-5% (w/v) NaCl, with optimal growth at 2% (w/v). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16 S rRNA and genome sequences placed strain MF1-13ᵀ within the family Roseobacteraceae (class Alphap
