The levels of free amino acids in rat tissues under thiamine deficiency induced by antivitamin (oxithiamine) and under thiamine-deficient diet were studied. Changes in the amino acid pool at these two forms of vitamin B1 deficiency were revealed. The most typical change consists in extensive accumulation of alanine and glutamate with a simultaneous decrease in the amount of many other essential and non-essential amino acids. The disturbances in the amino acid pool under thiamine deficiency may be probably regarded as resulting from inhibition of alpha-keto acid dehydrogenase activities.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Malnutrition is one of the major postoperative complications of radical subtotal or total gastrectomy for gastric cancer. This study was conducted to clarify the nutritional consequences of radical gastrectomy with respect to protein metabolism.
METHODOLOGY: To evaluate the nutritional status and the abnormalities in protein metabolism in such cases, serum concentrations of 23 amino acids were measured by high performance liquid chromatography in 40 patients who had undergone either subtotal (n = 20) or total (n = 20) gastrectomy more than 6 months prior to this analysis.

Meat is a major source of dietary protein and fat across the globe. Red and white meat are the major terms consumers use to refer to types of meat; however, these terms do not fully encompass the range of nutrients provided by meat sources. Red meat refers to meat from mammalian skeletal muscle, while white meat refers to poultry. Red and white meat both provide a wide range of nutritional components in the context of fatty acids, amino acids and micronutrients. Importantly, it has been demonstrated that amino acid profiles differ between red meat and white meat as well as between different so

Amino acid metabolism regulates essential cellular functions, not only by fueling protein synthesis, but also by supporting the biogenesis of nucleotides, redox factors and lipids. Amino acids are also involved in tricarboxylic acid cycle anaplerosis, epigenetic modifications, next to synthesis of neurotransmitters and hormones. As such, amino acids contribute to a broad range of cellular processes such as proliferation, matrix synthesis and intercellular communication, which are all critical for skeletal cell functioning. Here we summarize recent work elucidating how amino acid metabolism sup

The differential influence of individual amino acids on the growth of Chlamydia trachomatis versus Chlamydia (Chlamydophila) pneumoniae was investigated. Certain essential amino acids added in excess at the middle of the infection course resulted in varying degrees of abnormality in the development of the two species. If amino acids were added as early as 2 h post-infection, these effects were even more pronounced. The most effective amino acids in terms of C. trachomatis growth inhibition were leucine, isoleucine, methionine and phenylalanine. These amino acids elicited similar effects agains

Before dietary treatment, no significant differences, except for alanine, were found in the amino acid pattern for 22 young mothers and 33 children with protein-energy malnutrition (PEM), the characteristic feature of the serum pattern being the imbalance between essential and non essential amino acids. Apart from lysine, the essential amino acid levels were all below normal. This imbalance may be detected readily from the abnormal values of some particularly sensitive ratios: phenylalanine/tyrosine, valine/glycine, non essential amino acids/essential amino acids and, above all, serine/threoni

Derived from a long history of artificial and natural selection, Lueyang black-boned chicken is preferred by consumers due to its unique meat characteristics. The primary aim of this study was to systematically identify key amino acids and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that differentiate Lueyang black-boned chicken (LBC) from AA chicken. The contents of essential amino acids, non essential amino acids and flavor amino acids were higher in the breast muscle of LBC compared to AA chicken. Volatilomic analysis revealed that the meat contains various VOCs, including esters, aldehydes, ketones,

This is a preliminary report on an eight-year-old child with uremia (terminal renal failure) on chronic dialysis, that developed a postoperative high output small bowel fistula associated with sepsis and malnutrition. She was successfully treated with a Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) scheme including an amino acid solution with 60% essential amino acids and 40% non-essential amino acids, now available in Peru, without increasing the frequency of hemodialysis for a 72-day period on TPN. Attention is drawn to Nutritional Support Team Approach.

INTRODUCTION: Metabolic and hormonal disorders resulting from chronic liver diseases culminate in increased proteolysis and decreased protein synthesis, which contributes to the development and progression of malnutrition and, consequently, sarcopenia. Nutritional management of sarcopenia in liver cirrhosis is a continuously evolving field and data on essential amino acid supplementation in chronic liver diseases is scarce.
AREAS COVERED: This review encompasses the current literature on oral amino acids supplementation in patients with chronic liver disease or patients with liver cirrhosis t

Regulation of food intake is associated with nutrient-sensing systems and the expression of appetite neuropeptides. Nutrient-sensing systems generate the capacity to sense nutrient availability to maintain energy and metabolism homeostasis. Appetite neuropeptides are prominent factors that are essential for regulating the appetite to adapt energy status. However, the link between the expression of appetite neuropeptides and nutrient-sensing systems remains debatable in carnivorous fish. Here, with intracerebroventricular (ICV) administration of six essential amino acids (lysine, methionine, tr

The FAO recommends the digestible indispensable amino acid score (DIAAS) to determine protein quality in foods, preferably tested in vivo. Here, the INFOGESTin vitrodigestion protocol was applied and supplemented with an analytical workflow allowing the assessment of protein digestibility and DIAAS calculation. The protocol was applied to selected samples WPI, zein, collagen, black beans, pigeon peas, All-Bran®, and peanuts. The total protein digestibility, digestibility of individual amino acids (AA), and DIAAS values were established and compared with in vivo data for the same substrates. To

INTRODUCTION: Kidney failure in children causes systemic complications and protein-energy malnutrition due to losses of amino acids, dipeptides, and proteins during dialysis, which may impair growth. This study measured protein and amino acid losses during hemodialysis in children and examined clinical and dialysis-related factors associated with these losses.
METHODS: A total of 11 children on chronic hemodialysis at Konya City Hospital were prospectively studied. Demographics, nutritional intake, dialysis parameters, and anthropometric measurements were recorded. Blood and dialysate effluen

5-Aminolevulinic acid (ALA) is a key intermediate of heme biosynthesis, which is an essential component of the respiratory chain. Therefore, nutrients that affect ALA biosynthesis eventually affect ATP production, which is the basis of mitochondrial function. Although the effects of various non-nutrient components that affect ALA after biosynthesis have been reported, there are few reports on the effects of dietary amino acids/protein on ALA formation and the effects of dietary vitamins that are involved in amino acid metabolism. In mitochondria, ALA is synthesized from succinyl-CoA and glycin

Aging causes a selective loss in lean body mass, muscle being most extensively eroded. This presentation is an analysis of the consequences of this age-related loss for protein and amino acid metabolism. The use of stable isotopes allows us to measure the dynamics of protein metabolism in the intact human subject, while the output of 3-methylhistidine permits estimates of muscle turnover to be made which show a smaller reduction in body protein turnover per kg body weight in elderly subjects. This is due to the reduced contribution by muscle protein turnover, which decreases from 30 per cent o
