Compound 3 was further reacted with 4'-aminobenzo-15-crown ether to afford the crown ether-containing 6-N-thioureido-6-deoxycellulose derivative (4) in 70.0% yield. Polarity of the surrounding medium affects the excited states of UV-B sunscreens. Therefore understanding excited state processes in a mixed polarity model system similar to skin is essential. We report the excited state lifetimes, quantum yields, radiative and non-radiative rates of three sunscreens. We have tested the mutagenicity of a UV-B sunscreen ingredient called Padimate-O or octyl dimethyl PABA, which, chemically speaking, is identical to an industrial chemical that generates free radicals when illuminated. This study of identical twins affected with xeroderma pigmentosum, with follow-up and re-evaluation after a period of eight years, is unique in that it demonstrates clearly the value of cancer control methods, primarily the avoidance of solar radiation. The findings in the identical twins have been evaluated in context with their other affected siblings who also have shown a remarkable low rate of skin cancer upon initiation of cancer control (solar radiation avoidance).

Large numbers of lumpfish are produced for the Norwegian salmon industry and are used to combat sea lice infestations.
