[Behavior of piglets during castration with and without local anesthesia].

According to the German welfare act of 1998 (Art.5(3)1.), surgical castration of up to 4 wk old pigs does not require anaesthesia. However, the application of a local anaesthesia is discussed in the context of pain related responses to this procedure. In these experiments, effects of different methods of application on the behaviour of piglets during castration are evaluated as a contribution to the welfare assessment of this procedure. A total of 36 piglets between 10 and 14 days of age were castrated with and without a local anaesthesia. Local anaesthesia with Lidocaine 2% was applied in two

Feasibility of outpatient percutaneous bladder neck suspension under local anesthesia.

OBJECTIVES: To demonstrate the feasibility of outpatient percutaneous bladder neck suspension (BNS) under local anesthesia to treat stress urinary incontinence (SUI) in females. METHODS: Since October 1994, 40 women with SUI (mean age 59.6+/-12.0 years) underwent outpatient percutaneous BNS with "Z" suture anchoring of the anterior vaginal wall and pubocervical fascia. The suspension sutures were secured to percutaneously placed bone anchors. The procedure was performed under local anesthesia. Pain during surgery was evaluated with an analogue scale graded from 0 (no pain) to 5 (severe pain).

Lidocaine-prilocaine cream for local-anesthesia chalazion incision in children.

BACKGROUND: Chalazia are not uncommon in children. If conservative therapy for them fails, incision and drainage are necessary and usually require a general anesthetic, which increases costs and risks. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Five children (3 to 8 years old) had a eutectic mixture of lidocaine and prilocaine applied to the skin of the eyelid for 1 hour. Then local anesthetic was injected into the same site. RESULTS: The local anesthetic injection was painless, permitting successful incision and drainage in all cases. CONCLUSION: Lidocaine-prilocaine cream permits local anesthetic injection in

Inguinal herniorrhaphy under local anesthesia: a study of intraoperative tolerance.

Tolerance to inguinal hernia repair under local anesthesia was prospectively evaluated in a consecutive series of 41 patients who underwent hernia repair with local infiltration of 0.75 per cent lidocaine. Intraoperative discomfort was measured by an analog visual scale. All complications were also recorded. Mean intraoperative pain was mild (1.6 +/- 1.4). There were two complications. Wound infection and wound hematoma occurred in one patient each. There was no operative mortality. Normal diet was tolerated the day of surgery in 39 patients, and 30 were discharged from the hospital on the sam

Local anesthesia for inguinal hernia repair step-by-step procedure.

OBJECTIVE: The authors introduce a simple six-step infiltration technique that results in satisfactory local anesthesia and prolonged postoperative analgesia, requiring a maximum of 30 to 40 mL of local anesthetic solution. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: For the last 20 years, more than 12,000 groin hernia repairs have been performed under local anesthesia at the Lichtenstein Hernia Institute. Initially, field block was the mean of achieving local anesthesia. During the last 5 years, a simple infiltration technique has been used because the field block was more time consuming and required larger vo

Cardiovascular effects of local anesthesia with epinephrine in periodontal treatment.

To assess if the association of epinephrine with local anesthesia involves cardiovascular risks, 14 patients undergoing periodontal treatment were observed. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures and mean and maximal heart rates were analyzed. The comparison of basal and postanesthetic periods revealed a trend (nonsignificant) toward an increase in systolic blood pressure and a small, statistically significant increase in diastolic blood pressure; the heart rate increased in only a few patients, and never by more than 10 beats/min. The whole group showed a statistically significant reduction i

Treatment of Zenker's diverticula by cricopharyngeus myotomy under local anesthesia.

Optimum surgical management of the hypopharyngeal diverticulum is controversial. The authors discuss 48 consecutive patients (average age 72.1 years) with documented hypopharyngeal diverticula who were treated by cricopharyngeus myotomy, leaving the diverticula in situ. All came to the hospital with dysphagia; other symptoms included postdeglutitive cough, regurgitation, aspiration, and weight loss. Seven patients had had previous surgery for a Zenker's diverticulum with recurrence. Aspiration pneumonia was treated in 9 patients; 28 patients had concurrent chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

[A complication of local anesthesia during tooth extraction in children].

The authors describe a rare complication of local injection anesthesia, carried out in children for tooth removal: development of a specific granuloma due to Mucor and Nocardia mold fungi. The authors claim that the mycotic granuloma developed because of violation of the rules of asepsis, one of the possible violations being multiple use of disposable single-use syringes. No doubt, such complications can be easily prevented if asepsis regulations are strictly adhered to. The authors recommend the use of a separate sterile needle for every injection and treatment of the injection site with 1% i

Use of diphenhydramine for local anesthesia in "caine"-sensitive patients.

Emergency physicians regularly encounter patients who require local or topical anesthesia in the course of their emergency department (ED) treatment for lacerations, abrasions, or mucosal surface pain. Rarely, patients disclose a history of allergy to lidocaine and its chemical analogues, and the physician is faced with the problem of achieving adequate anesthesia without the use of these drugs. Research studies and anecdotal reports have suggested that diphenhydramine hydrochloride (Benadryl) may be useful as a substitute. We describe three cases of patients with histories of "caine" allergy

Inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion after cataract extraction under local anesthesia.

We report a case of a patient who underwent bilateral cataract extractions under local anesthesia. In both operations, the patient developed signs, symptoms, and laboratory data consistent with the syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone. In this era of outpatient cataract surgery, we believe this diagnosis should be entertained postoperatively in the proper clinical setting.

[Diagnostic and therapuetic local anesthesia in facial neuralgia (author's transl)].

Diagnostic and therapeutic local anesthesias (DLA and TLA) in experienced hands are also an important method first of establishing the cause of certain facial neuralgias and then of treating them successfully. Diagnostic and therapeutic local anesthesias presuppose a thorough examination of all factors which may arise in a particular facial neuralgia. If local anesthesia reveals a peripheral cause for the facial neuralgia concerned, a lasting relief of pain can then be obtained through extinction of the source of pain so that the body can restore, at first temporarily and under certain circums

Local Anesthesia in Superficial Circumflex Iliac Artery Free Flap Transfer.

BACKGROUND: The superficial circumflex iliac artery (SCIA) free flap is a modified version of the groin free flap. It is valuable for extremity, head, and neck reconstruction because of its versatility and minimal donor-site morbidity. General anesthesia (GA) is typically preferred for free flap surgery. However, in this study, we used only local anesthesia (LA) in SCIA free flap transfers for the reconstruction of the extremities, head, and neck. It offers an alternative to general anesthesia, potentially reducing perioperative risks. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed of 27

Needle-based level II temporomandibular joint arthroscopy under local anesthesia.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a novel office-based Level II temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthroscopy technique performed using only two 16-gauge needle punctures, achieving the same level of invasiveness as conventional arthrocentesis while allowing direct visualization and therapeutic intervention. METHODS: This technical note describes a minimally invasive arthroscopic approach performed under intravenous sedation and local anesthesia using two 16-gauge needle portals. A 0.7-mm diameter fiber-optic endoscope is introduced through one needle for visualization, while a 600-µm optical fiber connecte

[Thyroid surgery in local anesthesia: renewal of an old method].

AIM: Before the introduction of general anesthesia, thyroid operations were performed under local anesthesia. With the development of anesthesia, surgeons preferred to operate in narcosis. Nowadays regional anesthesia has become popular leading to faster recovery. METHODS: At the Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Cancer Center of our institute, between May 2019 and October 2024, 11 patients were treated in regional anesthesia with the blockage of the superficial branches of the cervical plexus, followed by an ultrasound-guided thyroid capsule sheath space block. Patients were previously given 2
