Doors to the Homes: Signal Potential of Red Coloration of Claws in Social Hermit Crabs.

Red coloration on a signaler's body may be an informative signal in many animals. For species that inhabit architecture (e.g., burrows, nests, or other structures), certain parts of the body are more exposed than others, potentially serving as superior platforms for signaling via coloration. Yet whether animals differentially advertise red coloration on body parts that are more versus less exposed from their architecture remains to be tested. Here, we systematically quantified red coloration in social hermit crabs (Coenobita compressus). These crabs inhabit architecturally remodeled shells and

IP3R3 gene expression in laying duck tissues and its polymorphisms associated with eggshell quality.

Inositol triphosphate receptor type III (IP3R3) is a key second messenger that mediates the release of intracellular Calcium ion (Ca2+). It binds to inositol triphosphate (IP3) to form a calcium channel, regulating intracellular calcium homeostasis. This study aimed to analyze IP3R3 mRNA expression in duck tissues and its single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) association with eggshell quality. Forty-five-week-old Guizhou Sansui ducks were used as experimental subjects. The real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR (qRT-PCR) assessed gene expression, while SNPs were identified via PCR products seq

Proteomic changes in extracellular vesicle and uterine fluid proteins correlated with eggshell quality in aged laying hens.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) in uterine fluid (UF) are thought to regulate eggshell calcification, yet their composition and functions remain unclear. This study compared EVs and EV-deleted UF (UFEV-) between high and low eggshell breaking strength groups to explore their contributions to eggshell calcification and quality decline in aged hens. The results show that the low strength group exhibited significant decreases across multiple parameters, including eggshell breaking strength, eggshell percentage (eggshell weight/egg weight), thickness, and fracture toughness, compared to the high brea

Multi-omics reveals key cell types and gene families regulating eggshell strength in chicken uteri.

Eggs represent an accessible and nutrient-dense source of high-quality animal protein, and decades of selective breeding have markedly elevated reproductive output in commercial laying hens. However, sustaining elevated productivity while improving eggshell integrity presents a critical challenge, as the molecular mechanisms of eggshell strength remain unclear. In this study, phenotypic assessment of eggshell strength was combined with single-cell transcriptomic profiling of the uterus from high- and low-strength groups, transcriptomic analysis of multiple tissues, and quantitative proteomic a

The relationship between mercury and selenium in the eggshell and egg content of the Whiskered tern (Chlidonias hybridus).

Mercury and its compounds do not have beneficial biological roles in living organisms. In contrast, selenium, within permissible limits, is an essential micronutrient and antioxidant. There is an antagonistic relationship between mercury and selenium. Therefore, the molar ratio of selenium to mercury is used as an appropriate index. Measuring the mercury in the environment without considering the protective effects of selenium does not accurately reflect the risks posed by mercury. This study aimed to measure the mercury, selenium, and the molar ratio Se:Hg in the shell and content of the eggs

Evaluation of separation performance for eggshell-based reversed-phase HPLC columns by controlling particle size and application in quantitative therapeutic drug monitoring.

Eggshell-based reversed-phase packing materials were applied to an analytical column for high-performance liquid chromatography. Commercially available eggshell powder was classified by a cyclone system to obtain three types of particles with different diameters (arithmetic mean ± standard deviation: 4.3 ± 3.8, 5.6 ± 3.3, and 9.5 ± 5.5 μm). Sedimentation separation removed tiny particles from each sample, resulting in particles with arithmetic means of 6.6 ± 5.5, 7.3 ± 4.5, and 10.2 ± 5.0 μm, respectively. The unclassified particles and three particle types treated with sedimentation separatio

A Modified Eggshell Technique for Sclerosing Thoracic Disc Herniation.

Sclerosing thoracic disc herniation refers to a condition in which the intervertebral disc in the thoracic region protrudes and becomes calcified, causing compression on the spinal cord and/or nerve roots. Sclerosing herniation of the thoracic disc poses a significant danger as it can lead to serious complications like paraplegia during or after surgery. Iatrogenic spinal cord injury is a common risk for individuals diagnosed with sclerosing thoracic disc herniation due to the inflexible protrusion of the sclerosing disc into the spinal canal and its adhesion to the ventral side of the dural s

A drug-incorporated-microparticle-eggshell-membrane-scaffold (DIMES) dressing: A novel biomaterial for localised wound regeneration.

Chronic wounds affect millions of people annually and have emotional and financial implications in addition to health issues. The current treatment for chronic wounds involves the repeated use of bandages and drugs such as antibiotics over an extended period. A cost-effective and convenient solution for wound healing is the development of drug-incorporated bandages. This study aimed to develop a biocompatible bandage made of drug-incorporated poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microparticles (MPs) and eggshell membrane (ESM) for cornea wound healing. ESM has desirable properties for wound h

Effect of eggshell temperature throughout incubation on broiler hatchling leg bone development.

Leg problems in broiler chickens may partly be prevented by providing optimal circumstances for skeletal development during incubation. One of the factors demonstrated to affect bone development is eggshell temperature (EST), which provides a reliable reflection of embryo temperature. The present experiment aimed to investigate the effect of EST on development and asymmetry of the femur, tibia, and metatarsus in broiler chicken hatchlings. Eggs were incubated from d 0 until hatch at 1 of 4 EST: low (36.9°C), normal (37.8°C), high (38.6°C), and very high (39.4°C). At hatch, chick quality was de

Incidence of salmonellosis in local hens' eggs.

Evidence indicates that outbreaks of salmonellosis may be due to infected eggs. This prompted a study on the incidence of salmonella in eggs. This study was done during summer 1991 and 900 eggs were examined in all. None of the eggs examined were found to be infected with salmonella. However, the result obtained should be treated with care and analysed with a critical eye. The result obtained does not imply that local flocks are not infected by salmonella.

Effect of acetazolamide on calcium accumulation by the developing chicken embryo.

The injection of 10 mg of acetazolamide into fertile chicken eggs on the 16th or 17th day of incubation resulted in a decreased accumulation of calcium by the developing embryo. A dose of 1 mg of acetazolamide did not affect embryonic calcium content. Although the eggshell serves as the primary source of calcium for the embryo, acetazolamide did not influence eggshell mobilization as measured by the release of 45Ca from labeled eggshells. Acetazolamide did decrease bone formation resulting in a statistically significant reduction in tibia dry weight and calcium content.

Role of magnesium in egg shell formation in the domestic hen.

1. The effects of feeding diets containing various amounts of magnesium on plasma concentration of calcium and magnesium in the domestic hen were investigated. 2. Plasma concentrations of calcium and magnesium decreased during shell formation in all birds. 3. Plasma magnesium content and egg shell thickness were severely reduced in birds given diets containing either 207 or 132 mg Mg++/kg. 4. Using electron microscopy, a precise correlation was observed between the normal distributions of magnesium and organic material across the egg shell of the domestic hen.

Are we dependent upon coffee and caffeine? A review on human and animal data.

Caffeine is the most widely used psychoactive substance and has been considered occasionally as a drug of abuse. The present paper reviews available data on caffeine dependence, tolerance, reinforcement and withdrawal. After sudden caffeine cessation, withdrawal symptoms develop in a small portion of the population but are moderate and transient. Tolerance to caffeine-induced stimulation of locomotor activity has been shown in animals. In humans, tolerance to some subjective effects of caffeine seems to occur, but most of the time complete tolerance to many effects of caffeine on the central n

Rub-thin-fracture-extract: first records of hermit crab predation and non-tool shell processing by coastal long-tailed Macaques at Wat Takiap, Thailand.

Coastal populations of long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis) display remarkable behavioral flexibility in exploiting intertidal food resources. Tool-using groups in Thailand are known to crack marine shellfish with stones, yet the behavioral repertoire of non-tool-using populations remains poorly documented. Here, we present the first report of long-tailed macaques preying on aquatic hermit crabs without using tools, based on observations at Wat Takiap, Hua Hin District, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, Thailand. During low tide, macaques were observed employing a sequence of substrate-assis

The Hierarchical Organization of the Layered Fibrous Shell of Chamelea gallina Guides Fracture Pathways.

Molluscan shells combine mineralized layers with distinct microstructures that can influence crack propagation. Here, we provide a through-thickness, multiscale characterization of the all-aragonitic shell of the striped venus clam Chamelea gallina and relate its hierarchical textural organization to observed fracture-surface trajectories. Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and spatially resolved Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction resolve an outer region comprising (i) convergent and divergent fibrous sublayers sep

Highly effective and reusable nanometal/carbon-coated snail shell for the sequestration of metronidazole: decontamination and disinfection.

This study investigates the adsorption efficiency of metronidazole (MTZ) from aqueous solutions using snail shell (SSB) and carbon-coated zinc oxide-modified snail shell (SCZ) nanocomposites. Key factors influencing adsorption capacity, including pH, contact time, adsorbent dose, MTZ concentration, and temperature, were systematically evaluated. The maximum adsorption capacities were 25.96 mg g-1 for SSB and 35.13 mg g-1 for SCZ, with optimal adsorption occurring at pH 3 after 180 min of contact. Kinetic analysis revealed that the pseudo-second-order model best fit the experimental data, while

Upcycling shrimp shells using supercritical CO2 assisted by enzymatic pretreatment: astaxanthin, protein, and amino acids.

Shrimp shell, a by-product of the food industry, can be effectively upcycled to obtain astaxanthin and proteins/amino acids that can be used as ingredients in functional food and cosmetics. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of SC-CO2 in extracting astaxanthin from shrimp shell by investigating the effects of different parameters such as enzymatic pretreatment (papain and neutral protease at 0.2-3.0%, w/v), pressure (100-300 bar), temperature (40-60 °C), and co-solvent (ethanol). In addition, the hydrolysate and residue from the enzymatic pretreatment and the residues from the extr

Aging-associated increased nitric oxide production is a potential cause of inferior eggshell quality produced by aged laying hens.

It is important to prolong the productive life of laying hens without compromising their welfare. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to identify the cause for inferior quality egg production of aged hens by investigating the aging-associated molecular changes related to eggshell formation in the isthmic and uterine mucosae and determining whether nitric oxide plays a role in decreasing the quality of eggs produced by aged hens. Young (35 weeks old) and aged (130 weeks old) White Leghorn laying hens were used in this study to determine the effects of age on the expression of proteins related to
