Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is a nucleated intracellular parasitic protozoan with a broad host selectivity. It causes toxoplasmosis in immunocompromised or immunodeficient patients. The currently available treatments for toxoplasmosis have significant side effects as well as certain limitations, and the development of vaccines remains to be explored. Animal venoms are considered to be an important source of novel antimicrobial agents. Some peptides from animal venoms have amphipathic alpha-helix structures. They inhibit the growth of pathogens by targeting membranes to produce lethal pores a

To establish an entirely cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)-contacting nucleus-deficient model animal, we used cholera toxin B subunit (CB)- saporin (SAP), which is an analog of CB-HRP that specifically labels the CSF-contacting nucleus, to exclusively damage the nucleus. The effectiveness and specificity of the ablation were evaluated upon days 1-10 after CB-SAP microinjection into the brain ventricular system. The vital status, survival, and common physiological parameters of the model animals were also assessed during the experimental period. The results demonstrated that CB-SAP damaged only the CSF

The One Health approach has emerged as one of the most influential approaches for addressing contemporary challenges at the human-animal-environment interface. Although its conceptual foundation is based on the premise that human, animal, and environmental health are equally interconnected, concerns have recently been raised regarding persistent anthropocentric tendencies within its scientific and institutional implementation. This discussion article examines whether the three pillars of One Health are receiving equivalent attention within contemporary scientific production and governance stru

Conidiobolomycosis is an emerging entomophthoramycosis caused by fungi Conidiobolus spp. Animal models are essential for the study of infectious disease in various areas such as pathogenesis, diagnostic methods, treatment and prevention. There is not currently an animal model for conidiobolomycosis. The aim of this study was to create an experimental infection protocol for Conidiobolus lamprauges in gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus). The study animals were randomly divided into four groups of four animals: immunosuppressed with cyclophosphamide (CPA) and infected with C. lamprauges (G1), immunoc

Though many surgical animal models have been used to induce osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee joint, they always open the capsule of the joint. Any surgical procedures that incises the capsule may cause inflammation, pain, and possibly altered gait. One common disadvantage of these surgically induced animal models is that they may affect the initial structures and synovial fluid in joint. These animal models may not be suitable for research into synovial fluid changes during early OA. This study aimed to create an animal model of early OA by resecting the medial collateral ligament (MCL) outside

There is increasing evidence that various in vitro and in vivo models of neuroschistosomiasis may be useful to study its pathophysiology, the clinical manifestations of the infection, and its effects on cerebral and spinal structures as well as the immune system. The use of animal models to study neuroschistosomiasis began in 1996 with the CD1 mice, followed by studies in Swiss mice, BALB/C mice, C57 mice, New Zealand rabbits, and Wistar rats. These animal models make it possible to study factors that contribute to the spread of the disease, its infectivity, and possible treatment effects. How

The overview demonstrates how the use of only one physico-chemical approach, viz., the electron paramagnetic resonance method, allowed detection and identification of dinitrosyl iron complexes with thiol-containing ligands in various animal and bacterial cells. These complexes are formed in biological objects in the paramagnetic (electron paramagnetic resonance-active) mononuclear and diamagnetic (electron paramagnetic resonance-silent) binuclear forms and control the activity of nitrogen monoxide, one of the most universal regulators of metabolic processes in the organism. The analysis of ele

Organoids are three-dimensional (3D) multicellular structures derived from stem cells that recapitulate the architecture and partial functions of their organ of origin. While human organoids are well established across various tissues, the availability of animal-derived organoids remains limited, particularly for respiratory tissues. Given the crucial role of the nasal microbiota as the first line of defense against respiratory pathogens, there is an urgent need for representative in vitro models to study this niche. Here, we present a detailed protocol for the establishment of Porcine Nasal Or

Influenza virus, with a global distribution, diverse animal host range and multiple virus subtypes, has caused several pandemics. To better prepare for the emergence of new subtypes and the possible threat of the next pandemic, the global status of animal influenza must be defined and documented. We created a global database of animal influenza events by searching scientific databases and the primary literature on animal influenza-related events up to and including 2016. The temporal, spatial and host distribution of animal influenza and the diversity of influenza subtypes in different regions

The Swat district, a conflict-hit territory due to Taliban militancy, had a damaged local health infrastructure. Animal-bite injuries leading to rabies is one of the major health concerns in developing countries, especially within conflict zones. The current prospective epidemiological study was conducted to estimate the cumulative incidence of animal-bite injuries, to summarize characteristics of bite victims and biting animals, and to collect information about post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) practices in Swat district, Pakistan, during 2014. A questionnaire was designed to collect data about

Histotripsy is the first noninvasive, nonthermal, and nonionizing focused ultrasound ablative therapy that effectively destroys targeted tissue. Histotripsy research began as an early preclinical prototype that eventually underwent small- and large-animal preclinical testing to ensure safe clinical translation to human use. Small-animal studies demonstrated the efficacy of histotripsy in destroying liver tumors and generating immune responses, while large-animal studies in human-sized livers further refined the technology for clinical translation. Preclinical studies revealed that histotripsy

Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) is a neglected tropical disease transmitted by infected tsetse flies (Glossina spp.) in sub-Saharan Africa. Infected tsetse flies can transmit trypanosomes, including Trypanosoma brucei subspecies that cause HAT in humans, as well as other trypanosome species that cause animal African trypanosomiasis in domestic animals and infect wildlife. Tsetse flies feed on a broad spectrum of hosts, including humans, elephants, buffaloes, rhinos, hippos, turtles, and monitor lizards. To understand how the insects can penetrate such diverse skin types, we detailed the an

The elongation of tissues and organs is important for proper morphogenesis in animal development. In Drosophila ovaries, the elongation of egg chambers involves aligned Collagen IV fiber-like structures, a gradient of extracellular matrix stiffness and actin-based protrusion-driven collective cell migration, leading to the rotation of the egg chamber. Egg chamber elongation and rotation depend on the atypical cadherin Fat2. Fat2 contains in its intracellular region three WRC interacting receptor sequence (WIRS) motifs, which previously had been shown to bind to the WAVE regulatory complex (WRC

The capacity to detect, control and manage emerging and re-emerging zoonotic diseases in Africa has been limited by a lack of utilisation of available reporting structures and policies to support programmes at national and local levels. This study explored the impact of the Zambian government policies on animal and human disease reporting and management and on One Health opportunities. An in-depth review and analysis of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in the existing policies and reporting structures in the departments responsible for Veterinary Services, Health, and Wildlife

The hippocampus and parahippocampal gyrus have been implicated as part of a tinnitus network by a number of studies. These structures are usually considered in the context of a "limbic system," a concept typically invoked to explain the emotional response to tinnitus. Despite this common framing, it is not apparent from current literature that this is necessarily the main functional role of these structures in persistent tinnitus. Here, we highlight a different role that encompasses their most commonly implicated functional position within the brain-that is, as a memory system. We consider tin

Studies on mammalian species with naturally reduced eyes can provide valuable insights into the evolutionary developmental mechanisms underlying the reduction of the eye structures. Because few naturally microphthalmic animals have been studied and eye reduction must have evolved independently in many of the modern groups, novel evolutionary developmental models for eye research have to be sought. Here, we present a first report on embryonic eye development in the Cape dune mole rat, Bathyergus suillus. The eyes of these animals contain all the internal structures characteristic of the normal

Hyaluronan (HA) is a ubiquitous polysaccharide of (predominantly) animal origin that has important medical applications in joint, skin, and eye conditions. Biological activities shown by HA fragments in angiogenesis, inflammation, etc. are absent from highly polymerized HA. We propose that HA physiological properties are controlled by molecular mass dependent transitions between tertiary structures (e.g., beta sheets) and 2-fold helices, - reversible "denaturation", which is central to HA solution behavior. We demonstrate this phenomenon by 13C NMR. Four different acetamido C=O resonances, ass

What motivates animal cells to intercalate is a longstanding question that is fundamental to morphogenesis. A basic mode of cell rearrangement involves dynamic multicellular structures called tetrads and rosettes. The contribution of cell-intrinsic and tissue-scale forces to the formation and resolution of these structures remains unclear, especially in vertebrates. Here, we show that Fgfr2 regulates both the formation and resolution of tetrads and rosettes in the mouse embryo, possibly in part by spatially restricting atypical protein kinase C, a negative regulator of non-muscle myosin IIB. The recent upsurge in the association of congenital neurological disorders and infection by the Zika virus (ZIKV) has resulted in increased research focus on the biology of this flavivirus. Studies in animal models indicate that ZIKV can breach the placental barrier and selectively infect and deplete neuroprogenitor cells (NPCs) of the developing fetus, resulting in changes of brain structures, reminiscent of human microcephaly. In vitro and ex vivo studies using human cells and tissues showed that human NPCs and placental cells are targeted by ZIKV. Also of concern is the impact of ZIKV on hu
