An RNA-seq dataset of 68-day-old lambs from two sheep breeds was analysed to identify differentially expressed genes involved in biological processes, molecular functions, cellular components, and pathways associated with resistance against Haemonchus contortus. BACKGROUND: Zika virus (ZIKV) infection causes diseases ranging from acute self-limiting febrile illness to life-threatening Guillain-Barré Syndrome and other neurological disorders in adults. Cumulative evidence suggests an association between ZIKV infection and microcephaly in newborn infants. Given the host-range restrictions of the virus, a susceptible animal model infected by ZIKV must be developed for evaluation of vaccines and antivirals. In this study, we propose a convenient mouse model for analysis of neurological disorders caused by ZIKV.

We report work done in 1971 to determine the quantitative virulence for suckling mice of 26 variola virus isolates from different countries and from cases of differing severity. Strains of recognized variola major and variola minor viruses differed up to 100-fold (expressed as the harmonic mean dose of inoculum which killed mice 2-4 d old, inoculated intracranially, in 5 d). Isolates from Indonesia and from East and West Africa gave intermediate values. Unlike tests on chick embryos, this test distinguished between African and Indonesian isolates.

Syrian Golden hamster dams were administered 203Hg-labelled methyl mercury (MeHg; 1.6 mumol/kg) 1 day after parturition and milk was collected twice during the 1st week. The excretion of 203Hg in milk and the uptake, retention and tissue distribution of 203Hg in the pups was studied using gamma counting. The postnatal anemia in rabbits is accompanied by a marked rise in the plasma erythropoiesis stimulating factor(s) (ESF). Mumps virus-infected and normal newborn hamster brains were imaged with magnetic resonance (MR) within 24 h after birth and serially scanned. Hydrocephalus developed explosively on Day 6 postinfection and progressed until death occurred soon after Day 10. This study demonstrates the utility of MR in the investigation of experimental viral encephalitis in very small laboratory animals.

Death occurred earlier and its rate was higher in suckling mice treated with parent or radio-detoxified endotoxin and subsequently inoculated intracerebrally with lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCM) virus than in their virus infected but untreated control littermates. Thus, in suckling mice both the parent and the radio-detoxified endotoxin pretreatment contributed to the outcome of LCM virus infection in the form of lethal meningitis indicating its increasing effect on the cellular immunological reaction to the virus infection.

Despite few human cases of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), high rates of TBEV seroprevalence were reported among humans and animals in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in Northwestern China. In this study, the Karshi virus (KSIV) was identified and isolated from Hyalomma asiaticum ticks in Xinjiang.
