Craniofacial microsomia is a group of anomalies that occur due to developmental defects in the first and second branchial arches during the embryological period. The disease has various craniofacial and extracraniofacial presentation patterns. Lateral cleft palate is distinct from the most common palate clefts because it is located lateral to the uvula. The presence of a lateral cleft palate has been very rarely reported in the literature, and the aetiopathogenesis of the disease is still not well understood. We aimed to report a case of the coexistence of lateral cleft palate and craniofacial

BACKGROUND: Ankyloglossia, commonly referred to as tongue tie, has become a topic of increasing interest for health care professionals and families. Global data reports a significant increase in surgical intervention to treat ankyloglossia. It is essential that professionals can identify ankyloglossia in infants accurately and reliably as a basis for providing evidence-based recommendations and intervention, and to understand better its potential impact and outcomes for infants and children.
AIMS: The systematic review aimed to (i) identify assessments of tongue structure and function used to

PURPOSE: Recent studies have highlighted the potential role of a short lingual frenulum as a risk factor for pediatric obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. A shortened frenulum may contribute to abnormal orofacial development, leading to increased upper airway resistance and susceptibility to upper airway collapsibility during sleep. Recognizing early indicators, such as a short lingual frenulum, is crucial for prompt intervention. This systematic review aims to evaluate the association between a short lingual frenulum and the risk of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome in children.
METHODS: This s

INTRODUCTION: Plastic surgeons can help to eliminate stunting by surgically treating children born with congenital craniofacial anomalies such as tongue-tie, or ankyloglossia. Releasing ankyloglossia can help to support breastfeeding and the later development of orofacial anatomy and physiology. Failure to do so can lead to growth and development difficulties in children. We report a heartbreaking case of a stunted 8 year-old female with underdiagnosed and untreated ankyloglossia.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: The patient was consulted with a short stature, speech disorder, and swallowing disorder. H

Ankyloglossia refers to a congenitally tight lingual frenulum that limits the motion of the tongue. Whether the release of a tight lingual frenulum in neonates improves breastfeeding is not clear. Because many of the symptoms of ankyloglossia overlap those of other breastfeeding difficulties, a team partnership is necessary.

Ankyloglossia, or tongue-tie, is a variation in the anatomy of the lingual frenulum that restricts tongue movement. It is recognised as a cause of breastfeeding difficulty. We prospectively collected data from a specialist tongue-tie assessment clinic and evaluated mothers' experience using a questionnaire. We prospectively collected data from the specialist tongue-tie assessment clinic from January 2023 to October 2023 to assess factors that may influence a lingual frenotomy in an infant. Mothers were invited to complete two questionnaires, one baseline in the clinic waiting room and one foll

INTRODUCTION: Ankyloglossia in breastfeeding infants has been proposed to cause maternal nipple pain. Lingual frenotomy has been cited to reduce maternal nipple pain. The aim of this systematic review was to investigate if frenotomy in infants with ankyloglossia and breastfeeding problems reduces maternal nipple pain.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature search for RCTs comparing frenotomy to a sham procedure or usual care in mother-infant dyads with ankyloglossia and maternal nipple pain. Maternal nipple pain was registered as the main outcome. We conducted a meta-analysis and asses

To effectively address breastfeeding issues for neonates and mothers, one must understand the physiology of breastfeeding and the anatomical components involved in sucking, swallowing, and respiration. This study compared the tongue position and movement of neonates with tongue ties versus healthy controls during sucking. A new objective ultrasonography diagnostic approach was also introduced for the orofacial region. This retrospective study evaluated B-mode and M-mode ultrasonography images from 30 neonates clinically diagnosed with tongue tie, and a control group of 30 neonates. B-mode ultr

Ankyloglossia, commonly known as tongue-tie, is the most common disorder of tongue morphology characterized by aberrant attachment of the lingual frenum. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive literature review and evaluate the effectiveness of various laser wavelengths in the surgical treatment of patients with ankyloglossia. An electronic screening of PubMed and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) databases was conducted on 8 November 2021. The following search terms were used to review the available data on the subject of interest: (ankyloglossia OR tongue tie

Binder's syndrome, a rare congenital malformation of nasomaxillary complex, first described in 1962, has a hexad of characteristic clinical and radiographic features consisting of arhinoid face, intermaxillary hypoplasia with malocclusion, abnormal position of nasal bones, atrophy of nasal mucosa, reduced or absent anterior nasal spine and hypoplastic/absent frontal sinus. The typical facies due to mid-face hypoplasia may also be accompanied by other midline malformations such as cleft palate, spinal, skeletal and cardiac abnormalities. It is usually sporadic, of unknown etiology although vari

BACKGROUND: Mutations in the T-box transcription factor gene TBX22 are found in patients with X-linked cleft palate and ankyloglossia (CPX), and are reported in approximately 5% of all non-syndromic cleft palate patients. Clinical variability in CPX ranges from a mild or occult submucous cleft palate to a severe, complete cleft of the secondary palate.
AIMS: To explore the possibility that mutations lying outside of the TBX22 coding region might contribute to the phenotype, a non-coding upstream exon and its upstream regulatory region were investigated.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We sequenced 137
