BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD) is highly prevalent in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and may play a role in its pathogenesis. The liquid antacid Novaluzid (10 ml seven times daily) was compared with ranitidine (150 mg twice daily) and with placebo in 57 patients with symptoms and endoscopic signs of oesophagitis and gastro-oesophageal reflux. Seventy-one patients with duodenal ulcer disease completed a 3- to 6-week controlled randomized trial in which cimetidine (1 g daily) was compared with an optimally effective dose of propantheline. Both groups had free access to an antacid suspension. There were no significant differences between the groups concerning ulcer healing, relief of ulcer symptoms, antacid consumption, or patient compliance. The effectiveness of cimetidine or antacid in healing recurrent jejunal peptic ulcers after Billroth II gastric resection without vagotomy was tested in a randomized study of 18 in-patients.
