Ulcerated yellow spot syndrome: implications of aquaculture-related pathogens associated with soft coral Sarcophyton ehrenbergi tissue lesions.

We introduce a new marine syndrome called ulcerated yellow spot, affecting the soft coral Sarcophyton ehrenbergi. To identify bacteria associated with tissue lesions, tissue and mucus samples were taken during a 2009 Indo-Pacific research expedition near the Wakatobi Island chain, Indonesia. Polymerase chain reaction targeting the 16S rDNA gene indicated associations with the known fish-disease-causing bacterium Photobacterium damselae, as well as multiple Vibrio species. Results indicate a shift toward decreasing diversity of bacteria in lesioned samples. Photobacterium damselae ssp. piscicid

[The feeding activity of herbivorous fishes and their impact on coral reefs with different levels of anthropogenic degradation].

The feeding activity of three herbivorous fishes (Sparisoma viride, Scarus iserti and Acanthurus coeruleus) and its impact on two coral reefs were studied during the dry (February) and rainy (August) seasons of 2006 in Cuba. One of the reef stations is at the "Acuario" dive point in the Guanahacabibes National Park, and is relatively pristine. The second one is located at the north coast of Havana City facing the Instituto de Oceanología (IdO) and is subject to pollution and fishing pressures. Herbivore fish composition was analized, and foraging intensity was measured for all Acanthurid and S

Bacterial inoculation elicits changes to the coral epigenome.

Environmental shifts can cause epigenetic modifications in corals associated with changes in gene expression and physiology, although it remains unclear if associated bacteria can also induce such changes. Here, we inoculate nubbins of the coral Pocillopora verrucosa with an opportunistic pathogen, Vibrio coralliilyticus, and/or a coral probiotic, Cobetia sp., and subject the nubbins to heat stress. We show that pathogen exposure leads to distinct DNA methylation changes compared to the control, probiotic, and co-inoculation groups. We also confirm that DNA methylation broadly correlates with

Reef fish assemblages on Acropora patches in the Colombian Caribbean: resistance to reef degradation.

Coral reefs are crucial habitats for many fish species because they serve as feeding and shelter sites. However, due to their sensitivity to environmental changes, reef degradation has led to a drastic decline in fish and reef assemblages, which has also been reflected in associated economic activities. The loss of branching corals Acropora palmata and A. cervicornis has reached up to 90% in the Colombian Caribbean, resulting in a reduction in the abundance and diversity of associated fish populations. During two time periods (2011-2012 and 2023-2024) across the Colombian Caribbean, fish assoc

Microbially mediated carbon utilization by a cold-water coral inhabiting methane seeps.

Deep-sea methane seeps fuel biodiverse habitats sustained by the release of hydrocarbon-rich fluids and associated microbial activity. Here, we describe the ecology of a seep-associated cold-water coral and provide evidence of its associations with chemosynthetic bacteria. High-resolution seafloor surveys revealed that the distribution of this coral was predominantly confined to actively seeping zones, and habitat suitability models confirmed that proximity to active seepage was an important factor influencing the coral’s distribution. Stable carbon-isotope values were consistent with a nutrit

Hierarchical YOLO-SAM: A Scalable Pipeline for Automated Segmentation and Morphometric Tracking of Coral Recruits in Time-Series Microscopy.

Coral reef ecosystems are declining rapidly due to climate change, disease, and anthropogenic stressors, driving the expansion of land-based coral propagation for reef restoration. A major bottleneck in these efforts is the manual measurement of coral recruit tissue area from microscopy images, which requires 2-7 min per image and limits scalability. We present a hierarchical deep learning pipeline that automates this measurement by integrating YOLO-based detection with Segment Anything Model (SAM) segmentation. YOLO localizes recruits and classifies them by developmental stage; stage-specific

Anticoagulant residues associated with an attempted rodent eradication from a subtropical coral atoll.

The use of rodenticides is a primary method for eradicating rodents from islands for conservation purposes. Rodenticide residue monitoring is often incorporated into rodent eradication project planning to understand the potential effects on nontarget species, but robust long-term sampling is often challenging due to logistical and financial constraints. We documented more than two years of rodenticide residues at fine-scale intervals with over 570 samples associated with a rodent eradication attempt. Brodifacoum-25D Conservation was applied in an attempt to eradicate house mice (Mus musculus)

Direct observation and quantitative characterization of chemotactic behaviors in Caribbean coral larvae exposed to organic and inorganic settlement cues.

Upon their arrival in the water column, coral larvae use physical and chemical cues to navigate toward a suitable habitat and begin their settlement process. To engineer substrates that influence settlement, it is important to have quantitative data about the types and concentrations of chemicals that elicit desired behavioral responses before and after contact with the substrate. Here, we quantified the behavioral and morphological responses of coral larvae (Colpophyllia natans and Orbicella faveolata) to crustose coralline algae exudates (CCA) and ions found in coral skeletons using chemotac

Discovery of Peptidic Siderophore Degradation by Screening Natural Product Profiles in Marine-Derived Bacterial Mono- and Cocultures.

Coral reefs are hotspots of marine biodiversity, which results in the synthesis of a wide variety of compounds with unique molecular scaffolds, and bioactivities, rendering reefs an ecosystem of interest. The chemodiversity stems from the intricate relationships between inhabitants of the reef, as the chemistry produced partakes in intra- and interspecies communication, settlement, nutrient acquisition, and defense. However, the coral reefs are declining at an unprecedented rate due to climate change, pollution, and increased incidence of pathogenic diseases. Among pathogens, Vibrio spp. bacte

Sarcocinerenolides A, an open-loop decarbonizing cembranolide, and sarcocinerenolides B-I, eight polyoxygenated cembranolides with anti-thrombotic activity from the South China Sea soft coral Sarcophyton cinereum.

A previously undescribed open-loop decarbonizing cembranolide, sarcocinerenolide A, and eight undescribed cembranolides, sarcocinerenolides B-I, characterized by poly-membered oxygen ring fragments were isolated from the soft coral Sarcophyton cinereum collected from the South China Sea. The structures and absolute configurations of these previously undescribed compounds were precisely determined by analysis of NMR data, DP4+ and ECD spectra. The bioactivities of the compounds were evaluated using zebrafish models and sarcocinerenolides C and H exhibited anti-thrombotic activity.

Molecular diversity of black corals from the Saudi Arabian Red Sea: a first assessment.

Black corals occur as part of benthic assemblages from shallow to deep waters in all oceans. Despite the importance in many benthic ecosystems, where these act as biodiversity aggregators, antipatharians remain poorly studied, with 75% of the known species occurring below recreational SCUBA diving depth limits. Currently, information regarding the diversity and evolutionary history is limited, with most studies focusing on Hawaii and the South Pacific Ocean. Other regions of the world have received less attention, such as the Red Sea, where only two black coral families and four genera have be

Photocatalytic degradation of sulfonamides in suspensions of coral-like graphene carbon nitride with nitrogen vacancies.

Sulfonamides (SNs) belong to a category of broad-spectrum antibiotics, which have attracted growing concerns owing to the adverse effects on ecosystem. In this paper, coral-like graphitic carbon nitrides with nitrogen vacancies were prepared by polymerization of melamine in the presence of NH4Cl, and the effect of NH4Cl amount on the structure and photocatalytic performance of g-C3N4 in degradation of sulfonamide antibiotics such as sulfamethoxazole (SMX), sulfadiazine (SDZ) and sulfathiazole (STZ) was systematically studied. It was found that the addition of NH4Cl results in the formation of

Cyclodepsipeptides: Isolation from Endophytic Fungi of Sarcophyton ehrenbergi and Verification of Their Larvicidal Activity via In-Vitro and In-Silico Studies.

Culex pipiens mosquitoes are vectors to many viruses and can transmit diseases such as filariasis and avian malaria. The present study evaluated the larvicidal activity of marine-derived endophytic fungi Aspergillus nomius and Aspergillus flavus from the soft coral Sarcophyton ehrenbergi along with two known cyclodepsipeptide compounds, scopularide A (1) and B (2), isolated from A. flavus extract, against third-instar larvae of C. pipiens, using distilled water as a negative control and toosenedanin as a positive control. The structures of the isolated compounds were confirmed by various spect

Stylasterid corals build aragonite skeletons in undersaturated water despite low pH at the site of calcification.

Anthropogenic carbon emissions are causing seawater pH to decline, yet the impact on marine calcifiers is uncertain. Scleractinian corals and coralline algae strongly elevate the pH of their calcifying fluid (CF) to promote calcification. Other organisms adopt less energetically demanding calcification approaches but restrict their habitat. Stylasterid corals occur widely (extending well below the carbonate saturation horizon) and precipitate both aragonite and high-Mg calcite, however, their mode of biocalcification and resilience to ocean acidification are unknown. Here we measure skeletal b

Waterborne Cr3+ and Cr 6+ exposure disturbed the intestinal microbiota homeostasis in juvenile leopard coral grouper Plectropomus leopardus.

BACKGROUND: Chromium (Cr) mainly has two stable forms: Cr3+ and Cr6+. Cr and its compound are widely used in the printing, dyeing, leather making, and metallurgy industry. They are evitably released into the environment and pose a significant threat to creatures, for instance, the excessive chromium (Cr) burden in the marine ecosystem is often harmful to fish. Intestinal microbiota greatly affects fish performance, but how waterborne Cr affects fish intestinal microbiota is unclear. To test the hypothesis that the waterborne Cr exposure could significantly affect fish' intestinal microbiota ho

Hotspots for rockfishes, structural corals, and large-bodied sponges along the central coast of Pacific Canada.

Biological hotspots are places with outstanding biodiversity features, and their delineation is essential to the design of marine protected areas (MPAs). For the Central Coast of Canada's Northern Shelf Bioregion, where an MPA network is being developed, we identified hotspots for structural corals and large-bodied sponges, which are foundation species vulnerable to bottom contact fisheries, and for Sebastidae, a fish family which includes species that are long-lived (> 100 years), overexploited, evolutionary distinctive, and at high trophic levels. Using 11 years of survey data that spanned f

Long-term imaging of the photosensitive, reef-building coral Acropora muricata using light-sheet illumination.

Coral reefs are in alarming decline due to climate emergency, pollution and other man-made disturbances. The numerous ecosystem services derived from coral reefs are underpinned by the growth and physical complexity of reef-forming corals. Our knowledge of their fundamental biology is limited by available technology. We need a better understanding of larval settlement and development, skeletogenesis, interactions with pathogens and symbionts, and how this biology interacts with environmental factors such as light exposure, temperature, and ocean acidification. We here focus on a fast-growing k

Amid fields of rubble, scars, and lost gear, signs of recovery observed on seamounts on 30- to 40-year time scales.

Although the expectation of lack of resilience of seamount vulnerable marine ecosystems has become a paradigm in seamount ecology and a tenet of fisheries management, recovery has not been tested on time scales >10 years. The Northwestern Hawaiian Ridge and Emperor Seamounts have experienced the highest documented fish and invertebrate seamount fisheries takes in the world. Surveys show that, despite visible evidence of substantial historic fishing pressure, a subset of these seamounts that have been protected for >30 years showed multiple signs of recovery including corals regrowing from frag

Regional coral disease outbreak overwhelms impacts from a local dredge project.

A repeated-measures coral monitoring program established as part of the PortMiami expansion program provided an unparalleled opportunity to quantify the levels of coral mortality that resulted from both local dredging stress and as a result of climate-related bleaching stress and the subsequent outbreak of a white-plague-like disease (WPD) epizootic. By comparing measured rates of coral mortality at 30 sites throughout Miami-Dade County to predicted mortality levels from three different coral mortality scenarios, we were able to evaluate the most likely source of coral mortality at both the lo
