A partially purified extract of an ant venom from the South American tree ant Pseudomyrmex sp. was tested in a double-blind, controlled study of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Venom treated patients demonstrated an improvement in global efficacy and a decrease in the number of tender/painful joints and swollen joints. Swollen joint index improved in 60% of venom treated patients. Other parameters did not demonstrate significant change. Reduction of joint swelling was followed by symptomatic improvement that was sometimes delayed by weeks. Reactions were limited to erythema at the injectio

Prevailing drug resistance in malaria imposes the major roadblock for the existing interventions necessitating the timely need to search for alternative therapies. Ants in Solenopsis spp, termed 'Fire ants', are well known for their aggressive behavior, which leads to the release of toxic venom. Notably, the tribal natives of the malaria-laden densely forested Bastar region, Chhattisgarh, India, use fire ant sting-based therapy to cure malaria-like high fever. Inspired by this, we have collected the fire ants from the forest of Bastar and extracted peptide and alkaloid fractions from ant venom

The ability to perform an ante mortem differential diagnosis of Creutzfeld-Jakob disease (CJD) is aided by several clinical and molecular tests. There is a need for molecular tests which can reliably distinguish ante mortem variant CJD (vCJD) from ante mortem sporadic CJD (spCJD). A proteomics approach employing two-dimensional protein electrophoresis is applied to the study of ante mortem CSF samples obtained in collaboration with the CJD Surveillance Unit and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. The sample set includes two cases of vCJD, three cases of spCJD and three neurol

Reproductive division of labour is a key feature underlying the remarkable success of ants, where a reproductive queen caste and non-reproductive worker caste develop from a totipotent egg or larva. The number of ovarioles that develop after the egg or larva is determined to be a queen or worker caste ultimately determines their reproductive potential. Yet since very early descriptions of ant larval ovaries made by Ezhikov (1923) and Brian (1950s), the developmental basis of ovariole number dimorphism in ants has received little attention. Here, we revisit their work in light of more recent kn

Morphology is a key functional trait that influences the ecophysiology of organisms. The use of morphological traits for understanding functional ecology is common in studies of ants, especially relating to their feeding biology. However, there is limited information on the predictive value of these traits in identifying the trophic position of ants. Moreover, although vertical stratification is a common feature of many ant assemblages, with distinct arboreal and ground-active communities, the influence of verticality on the relationship between morphology and trophic position is unknown. We u

Leaf-cutting ants (Formicidae; Atta spp., Acromyrmex spp.) cut off pieces of leaves and other plant tissue and feed it to their symbiotic fungi. As this foraging behavior poses an imminent threat to agriculture, leaf-cutting ants are considered as pests of huge ecologically and economically importance. Consequently, research on leaf-cutting ants focused on their foraging decisions and interactions with their cultivated symbiotic fungi, whereas their effect on the attacked plants, apart from the loss of plant tissue, remains largely unknown. In this study, we investigated the consequences of an

The biotic resistance hypothesis asserts that native species may hinder the invasion of exotic species, which can occur either directly or indirectly by influencing interactions between exotic and local species. Aphid-tending ants may play a key role in the indirect biotic resistance to plant invasion. Ants may protect aphids, thus increasing their negative effect on exotic plants, but may also deter chewing herbivores, thus benefiting exotic plants. We studied native aphid-tending ants (Dorymyrmex tener, Camponotus distinguendus, and Dorymyrmex richteri) on exotic nodding thistles (Carduus th

Cannibalistic necrophagy is rarely observed in social hymenopterans, although a lack of food could easily favour such behaviour. One of the main supposed reasons for the rarity of necrophagy is that eating of nestmate corpses carries the risk of rapid spread of pathogens or parasites. Here we present an experimental laboratory study on behaviour indicating consumption of nestmate corpses in the ant Formica polyctena. We examined whether starvation and the fungal infection level of the corpses affects the occurrence of cannibalistic necrophagy. Our results showed that the ants distinguished bet

Pangolins are myrmecophagous mammals whose biology and ecology remain poorly studied. Termite mandibles and ant head capsules are the two primary remains found in pangolin feces. Determining the retention time of insect cuticles is important for understanding the digestive physiology of pangolins, while determining the recovery rate of termites and ants in feces is required to estimate the number of these prey items that are consumed by pangolins. In this study, the authors conducted feeding trials with captive Chinese pangolins (Manis pentadactyla). Sixty grams of the fungus-growing termite O

Clavigeritae is a group of obligate myrmecophiles of the rove beetle subfamily Pselaphinae (Staphylinidae). Some are blind and wingless, and all are believed to depend on ant hosts through feeding by trophallaxis. Phylogenetic hypotheses suggest that their ancestors, as are most pselaphines today, were free-living predators. Morphological alterations required to transform such beetles into extreme myrmecophiles were poorly understood. By studying the cephalic morphology of Claviger testaceus, we demonstrate that profound changes in all mouthpart components took place during this process, with

How workers within an ant colony perceive and enforce colony boundaries is a defining biological feature of an ant species. Ants fall along a spectrum of social organizations ranging from single-queen, single nest societies to species with multi-queen societies in which workers exhibit colony-specific, altruistic behaviors towards non-nestmate workers from distant locations. Defining where an ant species falls along this spectrum is critical for understanding its basic ecology. Herein we quantify queen numbers, describe intraspecific aggression, and characterize the distribution of colony size

Animals that live together in groups often face difficult choices, such as which food resource to exploit, or which direction to flee in response to a predator. When there are costs associated with deadlock or group fragmentation, it is essential that the group achieves a consensus decision. Here, we study consensus formation in emigrating ant colonies faced with a binary choice between two identical nest-sites. By individually tagging each ant with a unique radio-frequency identification microchip, and then recording all ant-to-ant 'tandem runs'-stereotyped physical interactions that communic

The defensive chemistry of two species of ants from Brunei in the genus Crematogaster (Physocrema group) has been investigated. Ants in this group release a white secretion from hypertrophied metapleural glands on their thorax when they are disturbed. Previously, one species in this group has been shown to produce alkylphenols and alkylresorcinols. In the present investigation, similar compounds along with salicylic acids and resorcylic acids that are anacardic acid and olivetolic acid homologs, respectively, are described from two species. The structures of these compounds were suggested by t

Urban ants may act as mechanical carriers of pathogenic microorganisms in hospitals, potentially posing a risk to public health. To support infection control strategies, we investigated the occurrence of ants associated with clinically relevant microorganisms in a public hospital in Maceió, Alagoas, Brazil. Ants were collected from 17 hospital sectors, and the most prevalent species were Tapinoma melanocephalum and Dorymyrmex brunneus. Microbiological analyses revealed bacterial isolates associated with ants in 10 hospital areas, including emergency wards. A total of 18 bacterial isolates were

BACKGROUND: The antennal flagellum movement relative to the pedicel, helps insects detect different cues and interpret their surroundings. Antennae play a crucial role in the tandem run recruitment process, where one ant follows another ant to reach the destination by maintaining a continuous physical contact, mostly using antennae, throughout their journey. In this study, we investigate how the restriction in movement of the pedicel-flagellum joint impacts the exploratory walk and recruitment during relocation in Diacamma indicum, a tandem running tropical ponerine ant.
METHODS: We studied t
