A growing body of literature supports the effectiveness of the remote delivery of rehabilitation services, i.e., telerehab. Aphasia treatment is particularly well suited for telerehab because of the verbal and visual nature of speech-language therapy, but scientific research investigating aphasia telerehab is in its infancy. No studies to date have evaluated whether treatment of acquired reading disorders by a live clinician can be feasibly, effectively, or efficiently conducted via telerehab. Here we address this gap in the literature by reporting our success remotely remediating the reading

Self-delivered speech therapy provides an opportunity for individualised dosage as a complement to the speech-therapy regime in the long-term rehabilitation pathway. Few apps for speech therapy have been subject to clinical trials, especially on a self-delivered platform. In a crossover design study, the Comprehensive Aphasia Test (CAT) and Cookie Theft Picture Description (CTPD) were used to measure untrained improvement in a group of chronic expressive aphasic patients after using a speech therapy app. A pilot study (n = 3) and crossover design (n = 7) comparing the therapy app with a non-la

BACKGROUND: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a noninvasive neuromodulation tool for improving language performance in patients with aphasia after stroke. However, it remains unclear whether it has long-term effects. After consulting a large number of relevant studies, it was found that there are no definitive conclusions about the long-term effects of tDCS on post-stroke aphasia patients.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether tDCS has long-term effects on post-stroke aphasia patients (PAPs) and which type of tDCS has the most beneficial treatment effects on language performance (es

INTRODUCTION: Poststroke aphasia is a common disabling complication following stroke, severely affecting patients' communication abilities and quality of life. Currently, various non-pharmacological therapies (eg, speech and language therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation, computer-assisted therapy, etc) have been applied in clinical practice and show potential. However, the relative effectiveness and superiority among these interventions remain unclear. This study aims to systematically compare the effectiveness of different non-pharmacological therapies in improving language function in

Background/Objectives: This study examined the effects of a computerized naming intervention combined with either cerebellar anodal transcranial direct-current stimulation (A-tDCS) or sham (S-tDCS) on noun and verb naming in Cantonese-speaking persons with chronic stroke-related aphasia (PWA). Methods: A double-blind, randomized, crossover, sham-controlled clinical trial was conducted with six Cantonese-speaking PWA following stroke. Participants received a 60 min computerized naming intervention incorporating audio-visual speech perception cues over five consecutive days, paired with concurre

PURPOSE: Measuring real-world communication participation of individuals with aphasia is complicated. Historically, this has been estimated through subjective participant or proxy self-report. To address potential inaccuracies, objective measures such as "talk time" have been proposed. Although promising, technological barriers to collecting and quantifying everyday conversations have been documented (e.g., background noise interference, differentiating recorded speakers, and operating Bluetooth applications). This study explored the use of a novel laryngeal sensor and a Global Positioning Sys

BACKGROUND: Speech and language therapy provision for aphasia (a language disorder) post stroke has been studied over time through surveys completed by speech and language therapists. This paper revisits provision based on what was received by 278 patients in 21 UK speech and language therapy departments in 2014-2016.
AIMS: To explore the speech and language therapy received by community dwelling people with post stroke aphasia in the UK.
METHODS AND PROCEDURES: A quantitative content analysis was conducted by two speech and language therapist researchers. Therapy goals recorded were coded i

INTRODUCTION: The instrumental activities of daily living are activities that are somewhat more complex than basic activities of daily living, and being able to perform them allows a person to be independent within a community. They include housework, tasks involving mobility, managing the home and property; catching the bus; cooking meals and going shopping, among other things.
AIMS: To evaluate these activities using the Lawton and Brody scale following an ischaemic stroke or intraparenchymatous haemorrhage and to analyse the factors that have an influence on the functional status at six mo

Apraxia of speech (AOS) is a motor speech disorder that occurs despite the absence of paralysis, weakness, or incoordination of the speech muscles and is characterized by difficulty in planning, programming, and sequencing speech movements. Currently, the Korean language lacks sufficient measures for evaluating AOS, whereas the Apraxia of Speech Rating Scale (ASRS) has been widely used internationally to assess the presence and severity of AOS. This study aimed to translate the Apraxia of Speech Rating Scale into Korean (K-ASRS) and verify its reliability and validity. The translation process

PURPOSE: This study investigated the relationship between non-orthographic language abilities and reading in order to examine assumptions of the primary systems hypothesis and further our understanding of language processing poststroke.
METHOD: Performance on non-orthographic semantic, phonologic, and syntactic tasks, as well as oral reading and reading comprehension tasks, was assessed in 43 individuals with aphasia. Correlation and regression analyses were conducted to determine the relationship between these measures. In addition, analyses of variance examined differences within and betwee

Despite the growing evidence regarding the importance of intensity and dose in aphasia therapy, few well-controlled studies contrasting the effects of intensive and non-intensive treatment have been conducted to date. Phonological components analysis (PCA) treatment for anomia has been associated with improvements in some patients with chronic aphasia; however, the effect of treatment intensity has not yet been studied with PCA. Thus, the aim of the present study was to identify the effect of intensity on neural processing associated with word retrieval abilities after PCA treatment. We used f

The study recently published on the clinical effect of lecanemab in early Alzheimer's disease (AD) only includes patients with amnestic presentation. However, a significant portion of AD patients presents a non-amnestic phenotype of AD, such as primary progressive aphasia (PPA) and could benefit of rather than on lecanemab. Therefore, we conducted a 10-year retrospective study at the Leenaards Memory Center in Lausanne (Switzerland) to identify how many PPA patients would be eligible for lecanemab. Among 54 patients with PPA, we identified 11 (20%) eligible patients. Furthermore, almost half o

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: The aim of this presentation is to report the performance pattern of a patient who suffered ideomotor apraxia with a disorder pattern of the conduction apraxia (CA) type. This clinical picture was originally reported by Ochipa et al. in 1994 as an alteration in the pathway that joins the two lexicons; later, in 2000, Cubelli et al. claimed that there is no evidence for the existence of such a pathway and suggested that the symptoms were due to an alteration affecting the mechanisms governing visuomotor conversion.

We report a 55-year-old right-handed Japanese man with motor neuron disease and dysgraphia of kana letters. He was admitted to our hospital because of dysarthria and dysphasia. On admission, the results of general physical examination were within normal limits. Neurological examination revealed severe dysarthria, dysphasia, impaired movement of the tongue without fasciculation and slight distal muscle weakness in the bilateral upper limbs. There were no fasciculation of the muscle. Deep tendon reflexes were hyperactive without Babinski's signs. Sensation, coordination, and gait were normal. Ne

BACKGROUND: It is important to capture a comprehensive language profile from speakers with aphasia. One way to do this is to evaluate spoken discourse, which is language beyond a single simple clause used for a specific purpose. While the historical trend in aphasiology has been to capture performance during isolated language tasks, such as confrontation naming, there is a demonstrated need and benefit to collecting language information from tasks that resemble everyday communication. As a result, there has been an increase in discourse analysis research over time. However, despite clinicians'

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies revealed that individuals with brain damage exhibit distinctive patterns in figurative language comprehension. However, a systematic investigation of the mechanisms between figurative language deficits and moderating factors such as lesion side remains lacking. Moreover, while the right hemisphere has traditionally been emphasized in pragmatic processing, accumulating evidence now suggests that the contributions of the left and right hemispheres may depend on linguistic factors such as conventionality. A recent systematic review on idiom comprehension in aphasia
