A cross-sectional survey was performed on domestic pigeons (Columba liviadomestica) to evaluate the prevalence of Haemoproteus columbae and Trichomonas gallinae in West Azerbaijan Province, northwest of Iran between July 2015 and September 2016. Five hundred and sixty oropharyngeal swab smears were examined, 297 (53%) of which were identified to be positive for T. gallinae. Also, the results obtained from blood smears examination indicated that 115 (20.5%) cases were found to be infected with H. columbae. The rates of T. gallinae and H. columbae infection infemale pigeons (58.3% and 21.3%, res

Cryptosporidium molnari was experimentally transmitted to gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) and European sea bass (Dicentrachus labrax) by oral infection with infected stomach scrapings. The infection was also cross-transmitted from infected gilthead sea bream to sea bass by cohabitation. The course of the infection was assessed after necropsy by three microscopic diagnostic methods and their sensitivity was compared. At the end of all the experiments the prevalence of infection reached 100%. In the oral experiments, both fish hosts appeared infected as early as 7 days post exposure (p.e.), b

Apicomplexan parasites have coevolved with animal hosts for hundreds of millions of years, yet only a handful of their lineages have made the transition to infecting vertebrates. Among the least understood vertebrate-infecting apicomplexans is Nematopsis temporariae, recently rediscovered after nearly a century of neglect. Here, we isolated this parasite from tadpole tissues and examined its host relationship, ultrastructure, and phylogenetic placement. We show that N. temporariae's monozoic oocysts are persistently associated with hepatic Kupffer cells in tadpoles of several frog species and

The crocodile monitor (Varanus salvator) is the most common monitor lizard in Thailand. Based on habitat and food, they have the potential to transmit zoonoses, with a high possibility of infecting ectoparasites and endoparasites. Diseases that could infect crocodile monitors and be transmitted to other animals, including humans. This research aims to identify and evaluate the phylogenetic relationships of Hepatozoon sp. and sheathed microfilaria in crocodile monitors. The phylogenetic analyses of Hepatozoon, based on 18S rRNA, and sheathed microfilaria, based on the COX1 gene, revealed that t

Blood and tick samples were collected from 333 apparently healthy sheep and 257 goats as well as 10 sheep exhibiting clinical signs of babesiosis in Adana, Gaziantep, and Adiyaman Provinces in southern Turkey. Fully engorged female ticks were selected and maintained in an incubator until they oviposited. The tick carcasses and their egg masses were examined. Piroplasms compatible with Babesia spp. and Theileria spp. were observed in both symptomatic and asymptomatic small ruminants. Genomic DNA isolates from blood of ovine, tick samples, and egg masses were screened for piroplasms by utilizing

The Red-crowned Ant-tanager Habia rubica (Vieillot, 1817) is a forest-dependent passerine that inhabits the understory of humid forests and is widely distributed throughout Central and South America, extending northward into Mexico. Wild birds may host a broad diversity of parasites, among which coccidia constitute one of the most species-rich and taxonomically complex groups. Within this context, the present study reports a new species of Isospora Schneider, 1881 parasitizing Red-crowned Ant-tanagers captured in Itatiaia National Park, a protected area of high ecological vulnerability in sout

The objective of this study was to morphologically characterize the structures suggestive of gregarines found in the feces of Triatoma dimidiata collected in five municipalities in Yucatan, Mexico. Three hundred ninety-six specimens of T. dimidiata collected during 2022 and 2023 were analyzed, of which 8.84 % (n = 35) showed evidence of infection by a gregarine in the intestine and 1.77 % (n = 7) of infection with vermiform gregarine in Malpighian tubules. With microscopic examination, it was possible to obtain measurements and micrographs that allowed the rediscovery of Machadoella triatomae

Using a combination of morphological and molecular data, we describe a new apicomplexan parasite, Isospora svecica sp. n., from the white-spotted bluethroat, Luscinia svecica cyanecula, from the Czech Republic. Oocysts were found in its intestinal tract. Sporulation was exogenous and took 1-3 days. The oocysts were slightly ellipsoidal, of average size 26.17 × 20.33 μm, with a smooth bilayered wall. Micropyle, oocyst residuum, and polar granules were absent. Sporocysts were bottle-shaped, of an average size of 18.82 × 8.82 μm, with a thin, colourless wall. A conspicuous knob-like Stieda body w

BACKGROUND: Molecular studies have suggested that the true diversity of Leucocytozoon (Apicomplexa: Haemospororida) species well exceeds the approximately 35 currently described taxa. Further, the degree of host-specificity may vary substantially among lineages. Parasite distribution can be influenced by the ability of the parasite to infect a host, vector preferences for certain avian hosts, or other factors such as microhabitat requirements that increase the probability that vertebrate hosts and vectors are in frequent contact with each other. Whereas most studies of haemosporidians have foc

Goussia lusca n. sp. is described from the liver of pouting Trisopterus luscus from the NE Atlantic Ocean in Ibero-Atlantic Portuguese and Spanish waters. Mature oocysts were 31.7 (28.8 to 35.4) microm in diameter. Each oocyst contained 4 ellipsoidal sporocysts arranged in an aleatory position, and measuring approximately 13.7 x 9.2 microm. Each sporocyst contained 2 sporozoites. Ultrastructurally, the sporocyst wall consisted of a dense inner layer 115 nm thick, transversely striated, regularly intercalated by thin grooves with electron-lucent spaces, and separated from the outer layer by a t

Testudo groeca tortoises were collected in the northern and southern Golan Heights (Israeli occupied territory of south Syria), and various locations in Israel and Palestine. Hyoalomma oegyptium ticks were found only on Golan Height tortoises, and only the tortoises and ticks from the northern Golan Heights were infected with Hemolivia mouritanica. Tortoises became infected after ingesting infected ticks. Male ticks carrying sporocysts, which remain attached to tortoises for extended durations, apparently served as the source for dissemination of new infections among tortoises. Sporogenesis fo

BACKGROUND: The genus Caryospora Léger, 1904 comprises facultatively heteroxenous coccidia that predominantly parasitize snakes, with seven nominal species recorded in vipers (Viperidae). In the Neotropical region, the Jararaca Bothrops jararaca (Wied-Neuwied, 1824) and the Common Lancehead Bothrops atrox (Linnaeus, 1758) were previously the only recorded viperid hosts for Caryospora jararacae (Carini, 1939). This study aimed to provide a morphological redescription and the first molecular characterization of C. jararacae, alongside a global taxonomic review of Caryospora spp. in viperids.

Tyzzeria Allen, 1936 is a coccidian genus traditionally associated with Anseriformes, although there are descriptions of Tyzzeria spp. from junglefowls, snakes, skinks and mice. In this sense, the current study performs a taxonomic review of Tyzzeria spp., evaluating those that should be valid, invalid or that require further studies for validation. Along with this review, oocysts morphologically identified as Tyzzeria parvula (Kotlán, 1933) Klimeš, 1963 were recovered from fecal samples of swan geese Anser cygnoid (Linnaeus, 1758) in the mountainous region of the State of Rio de Janeiro, whic

Piroplasms, which include the agents of cattle fever and human and dog babesiosis, are a diverse group of blood parasites of significant veterinary and medical importance. The invasive Asian longhorned tick, Haemaphysalis longicornis, is a known vector of piroplasms in its native range in East Asia and invasive range in Australasia. In the USA, H. longicornis has been associated with Theileria orientalis Ikeda outbreaks that caused cattle mortality. To survey invasive populations of H. longicornis for a broad range of piroplasms, 667 questing H. longicornis collected in 2021 from 3 sites in Ne

Parasites play a major role in ecosystems, and understanding of host-parasite interactions is important for predicting parasite transmission dynamics and epidemiology. However, there is still a lack of knowledge about the distribution, diversity, and impact of parasites in wildlife, especially from remote areas. Hepatozoon is a genus of apicomplexan parasites that is transmitted by ingestion of infected arthropod vectors. However, alternative modes of transmission have been identified such as trophic transmission. Using the 18S rRNA gene as a marker, we provide an assessment of Hepatozoon prev

Profilin is one of the actin-binding proteins that regulate dynamics of actin polymerization. It plays a key role in cell motility and invasion. It also interacts with several other proteins notably through its poly-L-proline (PLP) binding site. Profilin in apicomplexa is characterized by a unique mini-domain consisting of a large β-hairpin extension and an acidic loop which is relatively longer in Plasmodium species. Profilin is essential for the invasive blood stages of Plasmodium falciparum. In the current study, unbound profilins from Plasmodium falciparum (Pf), Toxoplasma gondii (Tg), and

An Isospora species, Isospora amphiboluri, originally described by Canon in 1967 and later by McAllister et al. (1995), was isolated from a central netted dragon (Ctenophorus nuchalis) housed at a wildlife rehabilitation centre in Perth, Western Australia. Sporulated oocysts of Isospora amphiboluri (n = 30) are spherical, 24.2 (26.5-23.0) μm in length and 23.9 (22.4-25.9) μm in width, with a shape index of 1.01. The bilayered oocyst wall is smooth and light-yellow in color. Polar granule, oocyst residuum and micropyle are absent. The sporocysts are lemon-shaped, 15.7 (15.2-18.0) × 10.2 (8.9-11

Cory's Shearwater (Calonectris borealis), a migratory seabird from the Procellariidae family, is widely distributed across the Atlantic Ocean. It breeds on islands of Azores, Madeira, Canary, and Berlengas, and winters in coastal areas of South America and Africa. This species' wide habitat range contributes to pathogen exchange across global regions. Plasmodium, a genus of apicomplexan parasites causing avian malaria, affects many wild bird species worldwide. Although rare in seabirds, Plasmodium infections can significantly impact these hosts. We identified and characterized a new Plasmodium
