BACKGROUND: Unresectable appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (AMNs) with extensive peritoneal dissemination cause significant morbidity and have limited treatment options. We evaluated a novel combination of Celecoxib and Myrtol in treating such AMNs.
METHODS: Patients with recurrent AMNs with extensive peritoneal disease treated with a daily regimen of 200 mg Celecoxib and 1200 mg Myrtol Standardized were included. Progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were calculated, and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) trends were compared pretreatment and post-treatment in terms of percentag

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal dissemination of low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMNs), sometimes referred to as pseudomyxoma peritonei, can result in significant morbidity and mortality. Little is known about the natural history of localized (non-disseminated) LAMNs.
OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to evaluate the risk of peritoneal recurrence in patients with localized LAMNs.
METHODS: We performed a multi-institutional retrospective review of patients with pathologically confirmed localized LAMNs. Baseline characteristics, pathology, and follow-up data were collected. The primary e

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMNs) are uncommon epithelial tumors that frequently present with symptoms indistinguishable from acute appendicitis, yet may progress to pseudomyxoma peritonei with significant long-term morbidity. We report the case of a 51-year-old male who presented with periumbilical pain, nausea, and fever. Although clinical findings suggested acute appendicitis, abdominal ultrasound demonstrated cystic dilation of the appendix, raising suspicion for appendiceal mucocele. Appendectomy revealed a markedly cystic, pearly appendix with multifocal wall discontinuiti

INTRODUCTION: Heterotopic ossification (HO) within the gastrointestinal tract is extremely rare, and its association with low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) and pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is exceptional. We report a rare case of LAMN with visceral HO and PMP, highlighting its clinical features, pathological findings, and postoperative outcomes.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old female presented with progressive abdominal distension over 4 months. Imaging suggested an ovarian mass with ascites. Intraoperatively, gelatinous material filled the peritoneal cavity, with findings consi

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMN) are rare clinical entities. These lesions are characterized by an expansive growth pattern and a significant propensity for peritoneal dissemination, potentially leading to pseudomyxoma peritonei. Preoperative diagnosis of appendiceal mucinous neoplasm remains a formidable challenge, particularly in female patients, as clinical presentations often mimic common gynecological pathologies. This report describes the case of a 63-year-old female with a history of schizophrenia and previous pelvic surgeries who presented with generalized colicky abdomi

Appendiceal mucinous neoplasms are rare, and torsion of the appendix is exceptionally uncommon. Rupture of an appendiceal mucinous neoplasm can lead to pseudomyxoma peritonei, a condition with high morbidity. We present the case of a 64-year-old male patient with five days of right lower quadrant abdominal pain. Cross-sectional imaging of the abdomen and pelvis revealed a five-centimeter-long, tubular, ring-enhancing lesion, concerning for a mucocele. Intraoperatively, a 360-degree appendiceal torsion was identified, prompting conversion from laparoscopy to laparotomy to avoid mucocele rupture

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Our study was mainly aimed at identifying the cause, clinical course of the disease, its most dreaded complication pseudomyxoma peritonei and spread to adjacent structures. We have used IHC techniques to know the origin of the tumor where both appendix and ovary were involved.
CASE PRESENTATION: We have listed out and discussed in detail 5 cases, each of which have a different clinical course and variation in staging, grading and prognosis. One of the cases had mucin deposit in the ovary for which IHC was done to confirm the origin of the tumor. Some of the findings we

INTRODUCTION: Mucinous appendiceal neoplasms are unique tumors in which >50 % of the tumor volume is composed of extracellular mucin. They may present as an unruptured mucin-filled appendix or, more commonly, with peritoneal metastases after rupture or transmural invasion of the primary tumor. This case report describes a case of presumed ovarian malignancy with final pathologic diagnosis of low grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm. Due to its rarity, we decided to report it.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 37-year-old patient presented with a compliant of abdominal swelling. Abdominopelvic ultrasound wa

BACKGROUND: Nonoperative management of uncomplicated appendicitis is currently being promoted as treatment option, albeit 0.7-2.5% of appendectomies performed due to suspected acute appendicitis show histologically malignant findings. The purpose of this study was to investigate the incidence of neoplasm and malignancy of the appendix in patients presenting with suspected acute appendicitis in real world setting.
METHODS: This is a retrospective single-centre investigation of 457 patients undergoing appendectomy between the years 2017-2020. The patients' demographics, symptoms and diagnosis,

We report a case of ruptured low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm with an impressive toy puffer ball-like appearance on magnetic resonance imaging. A 79-year-old woman with lower abdominal pain underwent computed tomography scanning, revealing a 6-cm mass in the right lower abdomen. T2-weighted images showed a radial low-signal structure in the central area of the mass, which was presumed to be fibrotic. Pathology confirmed ruptured low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm. The rupture point was at the tip of the appendix, coinciding with the center of radial fibrosis. The unique morphology

The differential diagnosis of abdominal pain is wide as both benign and malignant pathologies must be considered. There are currently no published case reports of low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMNs) mimicking perforated diverticulitis. LAMNs are a heterogenous group of tumours, with no consensus treatment algorithm based on stage and histology. In this case report, we discuss a patient who presented emergently with generalized peritonism, with a diagnosis of perforated diverticulitis made on computed tomography scan. At laparotomy, a perforated appendix was identified, with histop

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm is a tumor of the appendix whose major clinical relevance derives from its inherent potential for peritoneal dissemination as pseudomyxoma peritonei. It sometimes poses challenges in clinical, radiological, and pathological diagnosis, and it may be confused with gynecological conditions in females. We report a case of low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm presenting as firm sclerotic cystic mass and was initially suspected to be an ovarian mass in a postmenopausal woman. We review the literature for the pathogenesis and clinical implication of sclerohy

BACKGROUND: Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMN) are detected in 0.7 to 1.7% of all appendicectomies. The diagnosis can be challenging, particularly in female patients where the differential diagnosis of primary appendiceal and ovarian mucinous neoplasms is unclear. Case Presentation. A 71-year-old female was referred to our tertiary hospital with the working diagnosis of a right ovarian cystic tumor. The lesion was identified through a transvaginal ultrasound performed for vague lower abdominal pain symptoms. CT scan confirmed these findings. Intraoperatively, an appendiceal mucoce

BACKGROUND: Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is an uncommon condition characterized by diffuse mucinous material in the abdomen and pelvis, generally arising from a perforated epithelial neoplasm. Typically, the disease presents as suspected acute appendicitis, ovarian mass, abdominal distension, or ventral hernia. Our case represents a very rare presentation of superinfected PMP.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 46-year-old female with a past medical history notable for depression, asthma, and uterine leiomyomas presented to an urgent care with 5 days of progressive abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, and sub

The fifth leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women in the United States is ovarian cancer. An estimated 21,980 new cases and 14,270 estimated deaths occurred nationwide in 2014. More than two-thirds of cases of ovarian cancer are diagnosed at stage III or IV when the peritoneal cavity or other organs are affected. Primary appendiceal malignant neoplasms may mimic advanced-stage ovarian cancer and can be misdiagnosed because of its presentation as a palpable adnexal mass. The authors describe a 42-year-old woman who was admitted to the department of obstetrics and gynecology to receiv

AIMS: We identified three extra-appendiceal low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMN)-like lesions occurring in the absence of appendiceal involvement, raising uncertainty regarding their classification, biologic nature, and clinical significance.
METHODS: We identified three cases of LAMN-like lesions arising in duplication cysts, anatomically separate from the appendix. These cases were evaluated by detailed histologic and immunohistochemical analysis and compared with other gastrointestinal duplication cysts diagnosed at the same institution. Whole-exome sequencing was performed in a

RATIONALE: Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) is a rare subtype of appendiceal pathology characterized by epithelial hyperplasia, cellular atypia, and mucinous accumulation within the appendiceal lumen, leading to obstructive expansion of the organ. Representing a mere 0.2% to 0.3% of all appendectomies and approximately 0.5% of gastrointestinal tumors, LAMN poses diagnostic challenges in surgical practice.
PATIENT CONCERNS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of a patient with the appendiceal neoplasm. A 39-year-old female presented to Jiaozhou Hospital, East Hospital Affiliate

Appendiceal mucocele is a rare entity first described by Carl von Rokitansky, characterized by cystic dilatation of the appendiceal lumen due to obstruction, epithelial proliferation or inflammation and accumulation of mucoid material. The cause can be either neoplastic or non-neoplastic. Patients with appendiceal mucocele can be asymptomatic or present with right lower quadrant pain which may mimic acute appendicitis. We present the case of a 68-year-old male, who presented to the Emergency Room with a two-day history of right lower quadrant pain, nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite. Abdomi

Appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (AMNs) are rare tumors that often present with non-specific symptoms, posing diagnostic challenges. This report aims to emphasize the importance of considering AMNs in the differential diagnosis of atypical pelvic symptoms, especially when initial evaluations suggest gynecological issues. A 56-year-old female with a past medical history of hyperlipidemia and a total vaginal hysterectomy performed over 20 years prior for abnormal uterine bleeding due to fibroids presented to her gynecologist with a three-week history of vaginal discharge and pelvic pain.
