Effects of modern physical training on physical performance and training-related injuries in the Chinese people's armed police force: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The Chinese People's Armed Police Force (PAP) undertakes high-intensity counter-terrorism, stability-maintenance and security tasks requiring exceptional physical fitness. However, conventional military physical training is monotonous in design, and training-related injury rates remain high (3,25). Modern physical training paradigms-Comprehensive Physical Training (CPT) and Preventive Training (PT)-have been gradually introduced into the PAP system, yet their combined effects have not been systematically quantified. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of modern physical training (C

Safety and Feasibility of Early Activity-Based Therapy Following Severe Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury: Results from a Single-Arm Pilot Trial.

Early activity-based therapy (E-ABT) has the potential to decrease complications and radically improve neurofunctional recovery following traumatic spinal cord injury (TSCI). Unfortunately, E-ABT after TSCI has never been attempted in humans due to practical obstacles and potential safety concerns. This study aims to report on the safety and feasibility outcomes of the Protocol for Rapid Onset of Mobilization in Patients with Traumatic SCI (PROMPT-SCI) trial: the first-ever trial of E-ABT in critically ill patients who suffered a severe TSCI. To do so, 45 patients with severe TSCI were recruit

Restoration of hand function and so called "breathing arm" after intraspinal repair of C5-T1 brachial plexus avulsion injury. Case report.

This 9-year-old boy sustained a complete right-sided C5-T1 brachial plexus avulsion injury in a motorcycle accident. He underwent surgery 4 weeks after the accident. The motor-related nerve roots in all parts of the avulsed brachial plexus were reconnected to the spinal cord by reimplantation of peripheral nerve grafts. Recovery in the proximal part of the arm started 8 to 10 months later. Motor function was restored throughout the arm and also in the intrinsic muscles of the hand by 2 years postoperatively. The initial severe excruciating pain, typical after nerve root avulsions, disappeared

Are physical fitness, a history of childbirth and injury history related to knee valgus in female Canadian Armed Forces members during a bodyweight overhead squat movement?

OBJECTIVES: A history of childbirth is associated with musculoskeletal injury (MSKi) in female members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). While previous injury and pregnancy impact knee kinematics, it is unclear if a history of childbirth is associated with medial knee displacement (MKD) in an overhead squat movement screen. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between MKD and (1) MSKi and (2) parity status in female CAF members. METHODS: 24 nulliparous and 21 parous female participants employed by the CAF completed a comprehensive physical fitness assessment of muscular flex

Lateralization of the glenosphere in reverse shoulder arthroplasty decreases arm lengthening and demonstrates comparable risk of nerve injury compared with anatomic arthroplasty: a prospective cohort study.

HYPOTHESIS: Grammont-style reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) has an increased risk of nerve injury compared with anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) due to arm lengthening. We hypothesized that an RSA with a lateralized glenosphere and 135° neck-shaft angle would reduce humeral lengthening and decrease the risk of nerve injury to the level of a TSA. METHODS: The study prospectively enrolled 50 consecutive patients undergoing RSA (n = 30) or TSA (n = 20) as determined by a power analysis based on previous research for our institution. Intraoperative neuromonitoring was used to detect

Pediatric Arm Reconstruction after Shot-gun Injury Using Peroneal Free-flap and Pedicled Latissimus Dorsi Muscle Flap: Late Follow-up.

A 15-year-old patient harmed himself upon firing a shotgun that he was carrying when he slipped and fell, causing a destructive wound in the right arm with a medial entry hole and a posterolateral exit hole. The biceps, coracobrachialis, triceps, deltoids, skin cover, and humerus were injured; however, the blood vessels and major nerves of the area were surprisingly not affected. The residual skin muscle defect after debridements was 16 × 5 cm medially and posteriorly, and the bone loss was 7 cm. The wound was reconstructed during a single surgery with a free fibula flap and a pedicled flap of

Emotional awareness and expression therapy (EAET) for chronic pain following traumatic orthopaedic injury and surgery: study protocol for a single-arm feasibility clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Nearly half of individuals who sustain orthopaedic trauma develop chronic pain and experience significant levels of depression and anxiety. Emotional awareness and expression therapy (EAET) is a newly developed psychological intervention designed to treat chronic pain by helping patients process psychological trauma and conflict to reduce pain. The purpose of this study is to examine the feasibility of delivering EAET to individuals who sustained traumatic orthopaedic injuries requiring surgery and who have chronic pain 6 months after hospital discharge. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The

The Effect of Shoulder and Knee Exercise Programmes on the Risk of Shoulder and Knee Injuries in Adolescent Elite Handball Players: A Three-Armed Cluster Randomised Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: The risk of injury in adolescent handball is high, and shoulder and knee injuries are among the most frequent and burdensome. The Swedish Knee Control programme reduced the risk of anterior cruciate ligament injuries in female youth football players and traumatic knee injuries in male and female youth floorball players. However, to date, Knee Control has not been evaluated in an elite youth sport setting. The literature on the prevention of shoulder injuries in sport is scarce, and there are to our knowledge no previous studies evaluating the preventative efficacy of injury prevent

Safety and Potential Efficacy of Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy in Adults with Spinal Cord Injury-Induced Spasticity: An Open-Label, Non-Randomized, Single-Arm Trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite the abundant literature on the use of selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) in spastic cerebral palsy, no investigation has evaluated its use in adult patients with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI)-induced spasticity. The present investigation aimed to evaluate the safety and potential efficacy of SDR in chronic SCI-induced spasticity for the first time. METHODS: In this open-label, single-arm, non-randomized clinical trial, all patients were assigned to the single study intervention arm and underwent SDR. The primary outcome measure was the safety profile of SDR. Secondary out

Isolated anterior interosseous nerve deficit due to a false aneurysm of the humeral artery: an unusual complication of penetrating arm injury. Case report and literature review.

Anterior interosseous nerve (AIN) injuries account for only 1% of all the nerve injuries at the upper limb. We report the case of a 22-year-old male who sustained a penetrating injury to the arm. No neurological deficit was found at the initial evaluation. However, 6 weeks later, he had a motor deficit confined to the territory of the AIN with weakness of the flexor pollicis longus and flexor digitorum longus to the index. He also reported paraesthesia. Tinel's test was positive over the pinpoint wound in the arm, where a painful swelling was felt. Electroneurophysiological testing indicated a
