Effects of a hydroxy-cinnamoyl conjugate of spermidine on arthropod neuromuscular junctions.

N1-coumaroyl spermidine is structurally similar to acylpolyamines found in spider and wasp venoms, which are known to block arthropod glutamate receptors. N1-coumaroyl spermidine reduced the amplitude of excitatory postsynaptic potentials recorded in crayfish muscle. This effect was dose dependent, with an IC50 value of 70 micromol l(-1). N1-coumaroyl spermidine reversibly reduced the amplitude of potentials elicited by iontophoretic application of L-glutamate, indicating a direct effect on postsynaptic glutamate receptors. Neither 1 mmol l(-1) spermidine nor 1 mmol l(-1) coumaric acid altered

Helminth and arthropod parasites of experimentally introduced whooping cranes in Florida.

Nine species of nematodes, unidentified larval nematodes, three species of trematodes, two species of acanthocephalans and a single species of chewing louse were collected from 1993 to 1995 from 25 introduced whooping cranes (Grus americana) in Florida (USA). In spite of a quarantine procedure involving anthelmintic therapy, three helminth parasites may have been introduced from captive populations. Other parasites acquired were similar to those found in a local congener, the Florida sandhill crane (Grus canadensis pratensis), or only occurred infrequently.

Bannwarth's syndrome and the enlarged neurological spectrum of arthropod-borne borreliosis.

We evaluated the clinical data of 80 patients with neurological disorders due to European arthropod-borne Borrelia burgdorferi infections proven by specific antibody titers. Painful meningoradiculitis of Bannwarth was the predominant neurological manifestation in adults, whereas meningitis with headache and slight stiff neck was the most frequent neurological syndrome in children. Central nervous system involvement occurred only in 13% of the patients; one of these patients had chronic encephalomyelitis for several years. Particularly in those inflammatory neurological diseases without a known

Bartonella quintana detection among arthropods and their hosts: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Bartonella quintana is a body louse-borne bacterium causing bacteremia and infective endocarditis. We aimed to describe B. quintana detection among arthropods and their hosts. METHODS: We searched databases in PubMed Central/MEDLINE, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science from January 1, 1915 (the year of B. quintana discovery) to January 1, 2024, to identify publications containing specific search terms relating to B. quintana detection among arthropods. Descriptive statistics and meta-analysis of pooled prevalence using random-effects models were performed for all arthropods and bod

Tyrosine Detoxification Is an Essential Trait in the Life History of Blood-Feeding Arthropods.

Blood-feeding arthropods are vectors of infectious diseases such as dengue, Zika, Chagas disease, and malaria [1], and vector control is essential to limiting disease spread. Because these arthropods ingest very large amounts of blood, a protein-rich meal, huge amounts of amino acids are produced during digestion. Previous work on Rhodnius prolixus, a vector of Chagas disease, showed that, among all amino acids, only tyrosine degradation enzymes were overexpressed in the midgut compared to other tissues [2]. Here we demonstrate that tyrosine detoxification is an essential trait in the life his

Biosensors for the detection of arthropod-borne veterinary viruses: A comprehensive review.

Veterinary arboviruses pose serious threats to animal health, especially in endemic areas. Traditional methods used for the diagnosis of these viruses are expensive, time-consuming, and require specialized personnel. This review discusses biosensor technologies for veterinary arboviruses, analyzing specific targets, mechanisms, sensitivity, specificity, and utility for use in the field. The remaining gaps were also mentioned. A comprehensive literature search was carried out in the major databases from 2015 to 2025. We used the keywords "Biosensing Technologies"Arboviruses," "Veterinary Medici

Viromes of arthropod parasites and their hosts: The case of bats and bat ectoparasites.

Blood feeding ectoparasites of bats have been found to contain insect-specific and vertebrate-infecting viruses of agricultural and medical importance. While it is plausible that some of these are of bat origin, those would be sourced either from the bat exterior or their blood meal. Bats, in addition to their regular diets, consume numerous ectoparasites during grooming. All microbes on and in the ectoparasites would then be introduced into the bat gut upon ingestion of the ectoparasites. To investigate the potential impact of bat ectoparasite viromes on the gut viral microbiome of bats, we c

Vertebrate-arthropod communication dictates tick development and pathogen transmission.

Cross-species communication drives the coordination of diverse biological processes in complex systems. Rana et al. discovered that Ixodes scapularis, the tick vector of Lyme disease, produces a receptor that binds host interferon-gamma (IFNγ) in the blood meal, which orchestrates tick development, immunity, and vector competence.

Phylogeographic dynamics of the arthropod vector, the blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis).

BACKGROUND: The emergence of vector-borne pathogens in novel geographic areas is regulated by the migration of their arthropod vectors. Blacklegged ticks (Ixodes scapularis) and the pathogens they vector, including the causative agents of Lyme disease, babesiosis and anaplasmosis, continue to grow in their population sizes and to expand in geographic range. Migration of this vector over the previous decades has been implicated as the cause of the re-emergence of the most prevalent infectious diseases in North America. METHODS: We systematically collected ticks from across New York State (here

The Unfolded-Protein Response Triggers the Arthropod Immune Deficiency Pathway.

The insect immune deficiency (IMD) pathway is a defense mechanism that senses and responds to Gram-negative bacteria. Ticks lack genes encoding upstream components that initiate the IMD pathway. Despite this deficiency, core signaling molecules are present and functionally restrict tick-borne pathogens. The molecular events preceding activation remain undefined. Here, we show that the unfolded-protein response (UPR) initiates the IMD network. The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress receptor IRE1α is phosphorylated in response to tick-borne bacteria but does not splice the mRNA encoding XBP1. Ins

Eosinophilic panniculitis triggered by arthropod bites in chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Skin findings are common among patients with hematological malignancies and are thought to be expressions of a reactive spectrum peculiar to immunosuppressed patients with an unclear pathogenesis. Eosinophilic panniculitis is a reaction pattern defined by single or multiple lesions consisting in nodules and plaques, and sometimes in papules and pustules, characteristically associated to hematological neoplasms or to a series of benign conditions such as arthropod bites. We report a case of eosinophilic panniculitis occurring in a 77-year-old woman with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Our case is

Exaggerated Arthropod Bite Reaction During Pregnancy: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: The diagnosis of exaggerated bite reactions is based on the clinical and pathological characteristics of the lesions. These reactions can be an indicator of impending immune suppression. METHODS: The authors report the case of a 35-year-old pregnant woman who presented with a pruriginous vesicular and pustular eruption over her thighs and buttocks. The clinical and pathological findings were compatible with an exaggerated bite reaction. The patient did not report any severe or exaggerated reaction to insect bites in the past. It was her first episode. CONCLUSION: Exaggerated bi

Arthropod Borne and Zoonotic Infections Among Military Personnel in Georgia.

Military personnel are at an increased risk for exposure to arthropod- borne and zoonotic pathogens. The prevalence of these pathogens has not been adequately described in the country of Georgia. As the Georgian military moves toward an increased level of capability and the adoption of European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organization standards, international field exercises will become more frequent and will likely involve an increasing number of international partners. This study was undertaken with the goal of defining the arthropod-borne and zoonotic pathogen threat in Georgia so force
