OBJECTIVE: Disorders of articulation or speech-sound disorders (SSD) are common in early childhood. Children with these disorders may be at risk for reading difficulties because they may have poor auditory, phonologic, and verbal memory skills.
METHODS: We sought to characterize the reading and writing readiness of preschool children with SSD and identify factors associated with preliteracy skills. Subjects were 125 children aged 3 to 6 years with moderate to severe SSD; 53% had comorbid language impairment (LI). Reading readiness was measured with the Test of Early Reading Ability-2 (TERA) a

UNLABELLED: Most mobile cleft lip and palate (CLP) surgical units and international missions developing countries generally address surgical issues that reduce the physical abnormalities of the people. Stigmatization persists as speech therapy for most patients is delayed (or they get none at all) due to a shortage of speech and language pathologists.
OBJECTIVE: To estimate cost effectiveness of speech camps.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: The 4-day speech camp and 1-day follow-up session were established based on the Community-Based Model for Speech Disorders for Children with Cleft Lip/Palate. Twelv

INTRODUCTION: Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is a neurodegenerative disorder that causes a gradual decline in language function. While combining transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) with rehabilitation of speech and language disorders (SLD rehab) has shown promise, its effect on motor speech disorders such as dysarthria and apraxia of speech (AOS), common in nonfluent variant PPA (nfvPPA), has been unclear.
CASE PRESENTATION: This study used an N-of-1 crossover design to investigate the effects of SLD rehab-tDCS on articulation and vocalization in a 77-year-old male patient with

Since the recommended time for a child's first dental visit is early, it is essential that pediatric dentists be familiar with all possible pathologies occurring during this early period of life. The parents of infants and toddlers who notice in their child a "tongue-tie" (ankyloglossia) are likely to turn first to their pediatric dentist for advice and help. Treatment options such as observation, speech therapy, frenotomy without anesthesia, and frenectomy under general anesthesia have all been suggested in the literature. The purposes of this report are to describe ankyloglossia, its clinica

The utility of oral-motor exercises in the remediation of children's speech acquisition delays continues to be a controversial issue. There are few empirical evaluations of the efficacy of these nonspeech activities in effecting speech changes, although much can be learned from investigations in related fields. The purpose of this article is to review the extant studies of the relation between oral-motor exercises and speech production in children as well as to examine the motor learning literature to gain a broader perspective on the issue. Results of this examination lead to questions about

Purpose This study evaluated ultrasound visual biofeedback treatment for teaching new articulations to children with a wide variety of speech sound disorders. It was hypothesized that motor-based intervention incorporating ultrasound would lead to rapid acquisition of a range of target lingual gestures with generalization to untreated words. Method Twenty children aged 6-15 years with a range of mild to severe speech disorders affecting a variety of lingual targets enrolled in a case series with replication. Of these, 15 children completed the intervention. All of the children presented with a

UNLABELLED: Information about the prevalence of consonant production errors, including compensatory articulations (CA), in individuals with cleft lip and palate (CLP) who speak Brazilian Portuguese is limited, particularly regarding liquid sounds. The literature primarily reports the occurrence of CA for plosive and fricative sounds, since occurrence of CAs in sounds that require higher amounts of oral air pressure is expected. While the use of CA during liquid sound production is not expected, clinical experience suggests that individuals with CLP present with inadequate backing, elevation, a

In this study, the adaptation of patients to removable partial dentures was evaluated related to articulation of Turkish phonemes. Articulation of /t,d.n,l,r/, /g,k/, /b,p,m/ and /s,z,ş,v,f,y,j,h,c/ phonemes were evaluated by three speech pathologists, on records taken from 15 patients before the insertion of a removable partial denture, just after insertion, and one week later. The test consisted of evaluation of phoneme articulation of independent syllables in terms of distortion, omission, substitution, mass effect, hypernasality and hyponasality. Data were evaluated with Cochrane Q. McNema

BACKGROUND: Dysarthria refers to a group of disorders resulting from disturbances in neuromuscular control over the speech mechanisms due to damage of the central nervous system (CNS) or peripheral nervous system (PNS). Rehabilitation outcomes of dysarthria significantly depend on the collaboration skills of the patients. This case study aimed to investigate the potential role of neuromuscular electric stimulation (NMES) in improving severe dysarthria. An 18-year-old man affected by severe dysarthria following postanoxic brain injury underwent two different intensive rehabilitation trainings:

In this paper we consider phonetic and phonological aspects of the English voiceless affricate /t integral of/ as it is realised by children with developmental speech disorders. The speakers described in the study have normal /t/ but disordered /integral of/ and /t integral of/. Using electropalatography (Reading EPG), we compare the stop and fricative phases of /t integral of/ to independent /t/ and /integral of/. This comparison shows that the place of articulation of /t integral of/ can be predicted from that of independent /integral of/. There is a strict requirement for the affricate's st

BACKGROUND: Children with speech sound disorders (SSD) constitute a heterogeneous population, with speech difficulties arising from different loci within the speech processing system. Speech perception has long been implicated in SSD; however, previous findings remain mixed, partly due to differences in task demands and limited consideration of SSD subtypes. In particular, few studies have systematically examined speech perception across multiple contrast types that are explicitly structured around common developmental error patterns and across clinically defined SSD subgroups.

OBJECTIVE: To explore critically whether there is a robust basis for the concept of an obsessive-compulsive (OC) spectrum of disorders, and if so, which disorders should be included.
METHOD: Selective literature review concentrating on three proposed members of the OC spectrum, namely body dysmorphic disorder, hypochondriasis and trichotillomania.
RESULTS: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) itself is a heterogeneous condition or group of conditions, and this needs to be appreciated in any articulation of a 'spectrum' of OC disorders. The basis for 'membership' of the spectrum is inconsisten

CLINICAL SCENARIO: Although speech therapy (ST) has been frequently studied in children, the efficacy of motor-phonetic ST in adults with repaired cleft lip and palate (CLP) is unclear.
CLINICAL QUESTION: How does articulation change over time for an adult with CLP engaged in motor-phonetic ST?
STUDY SOURCES: This study describes articulation and motor-phonetic intervention in a 33-year-old, monolingual Spanish-speaking woman presenting with CLP and associated velopharyngeal insufficiency. Case history, initial evaluation, surgical intervention, and progress during ST are described with refe

Introduction Compensatory articulations are speech disorders due to the attempt of the individual with cleft palate/velopharyngeal dysfunction to generate intraoral pressure to produce high-pressure consonants. Speech therapy is the indicated intervention for their correction, and an intensive speech therapy meets the facilitating conditions for the correction of glottal stop articulation, which is the most common compensatory articulation. Objective To investigate the influence of an intensive speech therapy program (ISTP) to correct glottal stop articulation in the speech of individuals wi

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that negatively affects millions of people. Early detection is of vital importance. As recent researches showed dysarthria level provides good indicators to the computer-assisted diagnosis and remote monitoring of patients at the early stages. It is the goal of this study to develop an automatic detection method based on newest collected Chinese dataset. Unlike English, no agreement was reached on the main features indicating language disorders due to vocal organ dysfunction. Thus, one of our approaches is to classify the speech phonatio
