Our auditory results using the Vibrant Soundbridge on the long process of the incus: 20 years of data.

OBJECTIVE: After 20 years of experience with different types of middle ear implants, we analyzed our database about the Vibrant Soundbridge (VSB) to know the rate of complications, the effect on the residual hearing and the audiometric gain in our center. METHOD: The study was retrospective and included all VSB implants bound to the long process of the incus in our tertiary medical center between january 1999 and february 2015. We observed the effect of surgery on residual hearing by comparing bone and air conduction thresholds before and after implantation. The functional results of the impl

Effectiveness of Auditory Measures for Detecting Hidden Hearing Loss and/or Cochlear Synaptopathy: A Systematic Review.

Standard audiometric evaluations are not sensitive enough to identify hidden hearing loss (HHL) and/or cochlear synaptopathy (CS). Patients with either of these conditions frequently present with difficulty understanding speech in noise or other complaints such as tinnitus. The purpose of this systematic review is to identify articles in peer-reviewed journals that assessed the sensitivity of audiologic measures for detecting HHL and/or CS, and which showed potential for use in a clinical test battery for these disorders. A reference librarian submitted specific boolean terminology to MEDLINE,

Auditory, Visual, and Cognitive Abilities in Normal-Hearing Adults, Hearing Aid Users, and Cochlear Implant Users.

OBJECTIVES: Speech understanding is considered a bimodal and bidirectional process, whereby visual information (i.e., speechreading) and also cognitive functions (i.e., top-down processes) are involved. Therefore, the purpose of the present study is twofold: (1) to investigate the auditory (A), visual (V), and cognitive (C) abilities in normal-hearing individuals, hearing aid (HA) users, and cochlear implant (CI) users, and (2) to determine an auditory, visual, cognitive (AVC)-profile providing a comprehensive overview of a person's speech processing abilities, containing a broader variety of

Use of the speech pattern audiometer and the electropalatograph to explore the speech production/perception relationship in a profoundly deaf child.

The use of electropalatography (EPG) in the teaching of new speech skills to deaf speakers, is not widely researched. Whether these skills can be maintained, or whether they can become fully automatic, without enough speech perception to enable auditory self-monitoring is therefore unclear. Most approaches to increasing speech intelligibility in deaf speakers, rightly, place an emphasis on maximizing residual hearing and listening skills. However, a small amount of evidence exists which suggests that speech production can aid speech perception. This research aimed to measure change in speech p

Hearing dysfunction in patients with Neuro-Sjögren: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Sjögren's syndrome is an immunologically mediated disease with salivary and lacrimal gland destruction characterised by typical sicca symptoms of dry mouth and eyes. Awareness of extraglandular neurological manifestations such as polyneuropathy and affection of cranial nerves is rising. Hearing loss as consequence of involvement of the vestibulocochlear nerve presents a severe disability. The exact prevalence and nature of hearing dysfunction in patients with Neuro-Sjögren has been insufficiently evaluated to date. METHODS: Thirty patients with Sjögren's syndrome (ACR-EULAR classi

Effect of Amplification on Speech and Language in Children With Aural Atresia.

PURPOSE: There currently is no guideline regarding amplification or verification for children with aural atresia. This population, with the absence of the ear canal, has obvious congenital hearing loss. Research suggests that delayed treatment for hearing loss can result in speech and language impairments, including poor performance in school. In this study we examined the relationship between amplification and emerging speech and language development in children with aural atresia. METHOD: Subjects included children, 3 to 6 years of age, with conductive hearing loss due to atresia. Clinical

Audiological evaluation.

This chapter describes the basic audiological tests used in otoneurological evaluation. The interpretation of pure tone and speech audiometry in the discrimination of specific disorders caused by lesions in the middle ear, cochlea, or auditory nervous system is described. The value of the acoustic middle ear reflex and brainstem auditory evoked potentials in the differential diagnosis of disorders affecting the cochlea and auditory nervous system is discussed.

Outcome measures in stapes surgery: postoperative results are independent from preoperative parameters.

The aim of this study was to compare audiometric results before and after stapes surgery and identify potential prognostic factors to appropriately select patients with otosclerosis who will most likely benefit from surgery. We enrolled 126 patients with otosclerosis (162 consecutive ears) in our study who underwent stapes surgery between 2007 and 2012 at our institution. Preoperative and postoperative data including pure-tone audiometry, speech audiometry, stapedial reflex audiometry and surgical data were analyzed. The average preoperative air-bone gap (ABG) was 28.9 ± 8.6 dB. Male patients

One-year audiologic monitoring of individuals exposed to the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.

This longitudinal study evaluated subjective, behavioral, and objective auditory function in 83 explosion survivors. Subjects were evaluated quarterly for 1 year with conventional pure-tone and extended high-frequencies audiometry, otoscopic inspections, immittance and speech audiometry, and questionnaires. There was no obvious relationship between subject location and symptoms or test results. Tinnitus, distorted hearing, loudness sensitivity, and otalgia were common symptoms. On average, 76 percent of subjects had predominantly sensorineural hearing loss at one or more frequencies. Twenty-fo

Comparative analysis between effective gain and functional gain in bone-anchored hearing aid users.

BACKGROUND: The cases of ear malformations, conductive, mixed, and single-sided deafness hearing loss are candidates for surgery and use of Bone-Anchored Hearing Aids (BAHA). Commonly, the literature highlights two procedures to assess the benefits and characteristics of amplification in users: functional gain (FG) and effective gain (EG). OBJECTIVE: Estimate and compare the EG and the FG to evaluate the benefits obtained by users of BAHA and, later, to compare tests of speech perception in silence and in noise. METHODOLOGY: The sample (n=79) was divided into four groups, implanted from Febr

Comparing Self-Fitting Strategies for Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids: A Crossover Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Fewer than 20% of US adults with hearing loss use hearing aids due to barriers like high cost. Over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids offer a potential solution, incorporating self-fitting strategies via smartphone apps. Self-fitting strategies have been validated for Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved OTC hearing aids compared with prescription-based approaches. However, no direct comparative analysis exists between in situ audiometry and self-adjustment strategies using self-fitting OTC (OTC-SF) hearing aids. OBJECTIVE: To compare self-adjustment and in situ audiometry sel

Listening Effort Measured Using a Dual-task Paradigm in Adults With Different Amounts of Noise Exposure.

OBJECTIVES: Excessive noise levels can result in hearing damage and/or hearing-related symptoms, thereby leading to impaired communication and, eventually a decrease in the quality of life. Moreover, in daily practice, subjects often indicate that listening in noisy situations is a challenging and often exhausting experience, even in the absence of a clinically significant hearing loss. Hence, a person's perceived difficulty of the listening situation will also be important to consider. It has been suggested that beyond the peripheral factors, there are some central cognitive correlates of spe
