Familial spastic paraplegia: an electrophysiological study of central sensory conduction pathways.

An electrophysiological assessment has been performed studying somatosensory, visual and auditory pathways in clinically affected and unaffected members from 4 pedigrees with the autosomal form of 'pure' familial spastic paraplegia (n = 32). In some members from 2 families, testing of all 3 sensory pathways showed abnormal results, even in those clinically unaffected. In another family, some had abnormal somatosensory and visual pathways, with no involvement of the auditory pathway. In a further family, the somatosensory and brainstem auditory pathways were abnormal, with sparing of the visual

Medial olivocochlear efferent reflex inhibition of human cochlear nerve responses.

Inhibition of cochlear amplifier gain by the medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferent system has several putative roles: aiding listening in noise, protection against damage from acoustic overexposure, and slowing age-induced hearing loss. The human MOC reflex has been studied almost exclusively by measuring changes in otoacoustic emissions. However, to help understand how the MOC system influences what we hear, it is important to have measurements of the MOC effect on the total output of the organ of Corti, i.e., on cochlear nerve responses that couple sounds to the brain. In this work we measured

Contralateral acoustic suppression of transient evoked otoacoustic emissions--activation of the medial olivocochlear system.

Medial olivocochlear pathway represents the final part of efferent acoustic pathway which comes from the superior olivary complex ending at outer hair cells. Activation of medial olivocochlear system (MOCS) alters the cochlear output decreasing the travelling wave within cochlea. Stimulation of MOCS provides protection against moderate levels of noise, encoding noise signals as well as selecting hearing attention. Activation of MOCS can be performed using contralateral acoustic stimulation. The principal result of presentation of contralateral acoustic stimulation during screening of transient

A computational model of the mammalian auditory periphery with a closed-loop medial olivocochlear reflex simulating across-channel efferent gain control.

The afferent (ascending) auditory system and how its specialized mechanisms and circuits support ecologically relevant auditory computations such as speech recognition have received considerable attention in decades past. This work has culminated in accurate computational models of early afferent coding alongside a good understanding of how low-level mechanisms (e.g., peripheral tuning) impact auditory perception. In contrast, the auditory efferent (descending) system and its role in auditory perception are much less well understood. To address this gap in knowledge, we describe modifications

Auditory brainstem anomalies in human albinos.

Brainstem auditory evoked potentials recorded from human albinos indicate significant hemispheric asymmetry. The asymmetry is symptomatic of differences between decussated and nondecussated auditory pathways in albino and pigmented humans at approximately the level of the superior olivary nuclei. Abnormal decussation of auditory pathways in albinos probably coincides with known visual system anomalies.

Tinnitus-related increases in single-unit activity in awake rat auditory cortex correlate with tinnitus behavior.

Tinnitus is known to affect 10-15 % of the population, severely impacting 1-2 % of those afflicted. Canonically, tinnitus is generally a consequence of peripheral auditory damage resulting in maladaptive plastic changes in excitatory/inhibitory homeostasis at multiple levels of the central auditory pathway as well as changes in diverse nonauditory structures. Animal studies of primary auditory cortex (A1) generally find tinnitus-related changes in excitability across A1 layers and differences between inhibitory neuronal subtypes. Changes due to sound-exposure include changes in spontaneous act

Integration of Functional Human Auditory Neural Circuits Based on a 3D Carbon Nanotube System.

The physiological interactions between the peripheral and central auditory systems are crucial for auditory information transmission and perception, while reliable models for auditory neural circuits are currently lacking. To address this issue, mouse and human neural pathways are generated by utilizing a carbon nanotube nanofiber system. The super-aligned pattern of the scaffold renders the axons of the bipolar and multipolar neurons extending in a parallel direction. In addition, the electrical conductivity of the scaffold maintains the electrophysiological activity of the primary mouse audi

Regulation of auditory plasticity during critical periods and following hearing loss.

Sensory input has profound effects on neuronal organization and sensory maps in the brain. The mechanisms regulating plasticity of the auditory pathway have been revealed by examining the consequences of altered auditory input during both developmental critical periods-when plasticity facilitates the optimization of neural circuits in concert with the external environment-and in adulthood-when hearing loss is linked to the generation of tinnitus. In this review, we summarize research identifying the molecular, cellular, and circuit-level mechanisms regulating neuronal organization and tonotopi

Basic and clinical physiology of the inner ear receptors and their neural pathways in the brain.

The six receptors of the inner ear (cochlea, two otolith organs and three semicircular canals) share a common transduction unit made up of a sensory hair cell, a first order sensory neuron and the synapse between them. Displacement of the stereocilia in a particular direction leads to excitation of the hair cell and activation of the neuron. Electrical and mechanical reflections of these stages of transduction can be recorded non-invasively in humans and in animals. These include cochlear microphonic potentials, otoacoustic emissions, auditory and vestibular evoked potentials. The ability to r

Contributions of non-primary cortical sources to auditory temporal processing.

Temporal processing is essential for speech perception and directional hearing. However, the number and locations of cortical sources involved in auditory temporal processing are still a matter of debate. Using source reconstruction of human EEG responses, we show that, in addition to primary sources in the auditory cortices, sources outside the auditory cortex, designated as non-primary sources, are involved in auditory temporal processing. Non-primary sources within the left and right motor areas, the superior parietal lobe and the right occipital lobe were activated by amplitude-modulated s

Chirp Analyzer for Estimating Amplitude and Latency of Steady-State Auditory Envelope Following Responses.

OBJECTIVE: The envelope following response (EFR) is a clinically relevant evoked potential, reflecting the synchronization of the auditory pathway to the temporal envelope of sounds. Since there is no standard analysis of this potential, we here aim at contrasting the relative accuracy of known time-frequency methods and new strategies for the reliable estimation of the EFR amplitude and latency. METHODS: The EFR was estimated using explicit time-frequency methods: the Short-Term Fourier Transform (STFT) and the Morlet Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT). Furthermore, the Chirp Analyzer (CA) w

Auditory distortion products measured with averaged auditory evoked potentials.

The purpose of this investigation was to describe the properties of averaged auditory evoked potential distortion products (AEP-DPs) in guinea pigs. This study provided a step toward developing a clinical index of nonlinear processing of auditory signals and supplied a baseline for studies evaluating the effect of cochlear damage on AEP-DPs. The amplitude of the AEP-DPs was evaluated as a function of f2/f1 ratio (1.12-1.52) and primary frequency (500 Hz-2000 Hz). The amplitude of the AEP cubic difference tone (AEP-CDT) increased with increasing f2/f1 ratio for the 500-Hz f1 primary and remaine

Age-related changes in the auditory evoked brainstem potentials of albino and pigmented guinea pigs.

The auditory evoked brainstem responses of guniea pigs in two age groups were recorded and examined for evidence of age-dependent changes at peripheral stations in the auditory pathway. Because pigmented guinea pigs have been found to be less sensitive to sounds than albinos, both groups were included in this study. Old and young animals did not differ in response latency or in the conduction times associated with the individual potentials. By contrast, the amplitudes of the brainstem responses to high-frequency stimuli were distinctly reduced in old guinea pigs, with no difference in the dyna

A novel approach to investigate subcortical and cortical sensitivity to temporal structure simultaneously.

Hearing loss is associated with changes at the peripheral, subcortical, and cortical auditory stages. Research often focuses on these stages in isolation, but peripheral damage has cascading effects on central processing, and different stages are interconnected through extensive feedforward and feedback projections. Accordingly, assessment of the entire auditory system is needed to understand auditory pathology. Using a novel stimulus paired with electroencephalography in young, normal-hearing adults, we assess neural function at multiple stages of the auditory pathway simultaneously. We emplo

Electrophysiology of the auditory system.

This review has attempted to summarise the properties of electro physiological responses in the auditory system. The treatment was broad and consequently somewhat sketchy. For a more detailed recent treatment of the physiology of the auditory system the reader is referred to Pickles (1982), Møller (1983), or Altschuller et al (1986). The data on acoustic injury have been reviewed recently by Schmiedt (1984). Discussions of a number of topics such as development, hair cell function and speech encoding are found in Berlin (1984).

Peripheral and brainstem auditory function in paroxysmal (px) White Leghorn chicks.

The paroxysmal (px) chick is a mutant White Leghorn (Gallus domesticus) which appears normal at hatching and during the subsequent week. By ca. 8 days posthatching, various symptoms develop, of which the most obvious are depressed food intake (anorexia) and audiogenic seizures. Histological evidence suggests that central auditory and vestibular nuclei and fiber tracts begin to degenerate prior to seizure onset. This degeneration, which affects central and peripheral components of both systems, becomes increasingly severe over time although auditory stimulation continues to elicit seizures. Cha

Frequency modulated sound pattern analysis in the lesser bulldog bat: the role of interactions between adjacent frequency elements of complex sounds.

A stereotyped approach phase vocalization response of Noctilio albiventris to artificial echoes simulating a virtual approaching object was used to assess the ability of the bat to analyze and extract distance information from the artificial echoes. The performance of the bats depended on the temporal pattern of frequency change of the continuously sweeping frequency modulated (FM) component of the signals. When the bats were presented with a CF/FM signal containing a time-reversed upward FM sweep, they responded with approach phase behavior at a performance level that was significantly below

Glial Cell Contributions to Auditory Brainstem Development.

Glial cells, previously thought to have generally supporting roles in the central nervous system, are emerging as essential contributors to multiple aspects of neuronal circuit function and development. This review focuses on the contributions of glial cells to the development of auditory pathways in the brainstem. These pathways display specialized synapses and an unusually high degree of precision in circuitry that enables sound source localization. The development of these pathways thus requires highly coordinated molecular and cellular mechanisms. Several classes of glial cells, including
