Forward masking among infant and adult listeners.

Psychophysical forward-masked thresholds were estimated for 3- and 6-month-old infants and for adults. Listeners detected a repeated 1000-Hz probe, with 16-ms rise time, no steady-state duration, and 16-ms fall time. Unmasked thresholds were determined for one group of listeners who were trained to respond when they heard the probe but not at other times. In the masking conditions, each tone burst was preceded by a 100-ms broadband noise masker at 65 dB SPL. Listeners were trained to respond when they heard the probe and masker, but not when they heard the masker alone. The masker-probe interv

Relations between frequency selectivity and two-tone rate suppression in lizard cochlear-nerve fibers.

Cochlear-nerve fibers innervating the apicial region of the alligator lizard basilar papilla show sharp frequency selectivity in response to single tones (measured with the frequency threshold contour, or FTC), and the phenomenon of two-tone rate suppression (TTRS) in response to two simultaneously presented tones (measured with the iso-TTRS contour, or ITC). The gross shapes of the FTCs, as characterized by the slopes of the sides and Q10dB, vary systematically with the fiber's characteristic frequency (CF). 'Fine-structural' features are also found: below CF, notches (frequency regions of re

Spatially dynamic binaural cues have a larger influence on auditory stream segregation than static cues.

Auditory scene analysis is the process used to separate and integrate acoustic information into representations of auditory objects. Spatial cues play a critical role in this process, but questions remain regarding how these cues influence auditory stream segregation. The ABA stream segregation paradigm capitalizes on a bistable stimulus capable of eliciting perception of a single (integrated) auditory stream, or two separate (segregated) auditory streams with equal probability. Here, perceptual bistability was used to assess the effectiveness of interaural level (ILD), time (ITD), and correla

Biological relevance and methodological implications of unexpected hearing thresholds in a diving bird.

Many animals alternate between different media, such as air and water, thanks to specific adaptations. Among birds, penguins (Sphenisciformes) have the most extreme morphological, physiological, and behavioural adaptations to their amphibious lifestyle. Their auditory perception of sound, potentially matching different impedances in air and under water, is largely unknown particularly in terms of whether their underwater adaptations may have affected their in-air hearing capacity. In this context, we investigated the hearing ability of four captive Humboldt penguins (Spheniscus humboldti) in a

The role of suppression in the upward spread of masking.

The upward spread of masking refers to the higher growth rate of masking for maskers lower in frequency than the signal, compared to maskers at the signal frequency (Wegel RL, Lane CE. The influence of stimulus envelope and fine structure on the binaural masking level difference.

A masking level difference (MLD) paradigm was used to investigate the influence of stimulus envelope and stimulus fine-structure characteristics on monaural and binaural hearing. The degree of masker envelope fluctuation was manipulated by selecting narrow-band noises (50 Hz) on a continuum of values of the normalized fourth moment of the envelope. The noises were specified as low-noise noise (LNN), medium-noise noise (MNN), and high-noise noise (HNN). Fine-structure cues were studied by measuring thresholds at 500 and 4000 Hz, regions in which the availability of such cues to the auditory sys

ABR threshold is a function of blood oxygen level.

In order to determine if there is a relation between auditory threshold and oxygen availability, cats were anesthetized, paralyzed and ventilated with room air and with hypoxic gas mixtures. Auditory nerve-brain stem evoked response (ABR) thresholds and arterial blood oxygen levels [partial pressures (PaO2) and percent saturation (SaO2)] were determined. The ABR threshold was unchanged as long as PaO2 was above 30 mm Hg (SaO2 greater than 45%). Below PaO2 20 mmHg (SaO2 less than 25%) the animal was not viable. Between these values, the hypoxia caused ABR threshold elevations which were reversi

Decreased Reemerging Auditory Brainstem Responses Under Ipsilateral Broadband Masking as a Marker of Noise-Induced Cochlear Synaptopathy.

OBJECTIVES: In mammals, a 2-hr exposure to an octave-band noise (OBN) at 100 to 108 dB SPL induces loss of synaptic ribbons between inner hair cells and auditory nerve fibers with high thresholds of response (hiT neurons), that encode high-intensity sounds. Here, we tackle the challenge of diagnosing this synaptopathy by a noninvasive functional audiological test, ultimately in humans, despite the expected absence of auditory-threshold elevation and of clear electrophysiological abnormality, hiT neuron contributions being hidden by those of more sensitive and robust neurons. DESIGN: The noise

Acrylonitrile produces transient cochlear function loss and potentiates permanent noise-induced hearing loss.

There is growing evidence that agents that produce oxidative stress in the cochlea have significant ototoxic potential by themselves and can potentiate noise-induced hearing loss as well. Acrylonitrile (ACN) metabolism entails conjugation with glutathione, resulting in rapid and pronounced depletion of this important antioxidant in many organs including brain, liver, and kidney. ACN metabolism also results in cyanide (CN) formation through a secondary oxidative pathway. The results of two physiological experiments are reported here. First, the acute effects of ACN (50 mg/kg sc) on auditory sen

Inner-ear abnormalities and their functional consequences in Belgian Waterslager canaries (Serinus canarius).

Recent reports of elevated auditory thresholds in canaries of the Belgian Waterslager strain have shown that this strain has an inherited auditory deficit in which absolute auditory thresholds at high frequencies (i.e. above 2.0 kHz) are as much as 40 dB less sensitive than the thresholds of mixed-breed canaries and those of other strains. The measurement of CAP audiograms showed that the hearing deficit is already present at the level of the auditory nerve (Gleich and Dooling, 1992). Here we show gross abnormalities in the anatomy of the basilar papilla of Belgian Waterslager canaries at the

The effects of noise on the auditory sensitivity of the bluegill sunfish, Lepomis macrochirus.

As concerns about the effects of underwater anthropogenic noises on the auditory function of organisms increases, it is imperative to assess if all organisms are equally affected by the same noise source. Consequently, auditory capabilities of an organism need to be evaluated and compared interspecifically. Teleost fishes provide excellent models to examine these issues due to their diversity of hearing capabilities. Broadly, fishes can be categorized as hearing specialists (broad hearing frequency range with low auditory thresholds) or hearing generalists (narrower frequency range with higher

Auditory steady state response in auditory neuropathy.

REVIEW: Auditory neuropathy is a disorder characterised by preservation of outer hair cell function, with normal otoacoustic emissions and/or cochlear microphonics, but an absent or distorted auditory brainstem response. PURPOSE: This study aimed to objectively assess hearing thresholds in patients with auditory neuropathy, using the auditory steady state response. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirteen patients with auditory neuropathy and 15 normal hearing subjects were examined. Audiological evaluation included basic audiological tests, otoacoustic emissions, auditory brainstem response and audi

Noise-induced cochlear neuropathy is selective for fibers with low spontaneous rates.

Acoustic overexposure can cause a permanent loss of auditory nerve fibers without destroying cochlear sensory cells, despite complete recovery of cochlear thresholds (Kujawa and Liberman 2009), as measured by gross neural potentials such as the auditory brainstem response (ABR). To address this nominal paradox, we recorded responses from single auditory nerve fibers in guinea pigs exposed to this type of neuropathic noise (4- to 8-kHz octave band at 106 dB SPL for 2 h). Two weeks postexposure, ABR thresholds had recovered to normal, while suprathreshold ABR amplitudes were reduced. Both thresh

Amalgam dental fillings and hearing loss.

In this study we investigated the effects of amalgam dental fillings on auditory thresholds. Participants (n=39) were non-smoking women age 40 to 45. Regression and correlation analyses were performed between auditory thresholds, measured from 0.25 to 16 kHz, and the number/surface area of dental fillings, using the ASHA criteria for ototoxic change as a reference for comparison. No significant correlation (p>0.05) was found between composite (non-amalgam) filling or drilling data and auditory thresholds. However, there was a significant positive linear correlation between amalgam filling data

Two new mouse alleles of Ocm and Slc26a5.

The genes Ocm (encoding oncomodulin) and Slc26a5 (encoding prestin) are expressed strongly in outer hair cells and both are involved in deafness in mice. However, it is not clear if they influence the expression of each other. In this study, we characterise the auditory phenotype resulting from two new mouse alleles, Ocmtm1e and Slc26a5tm1Cre. Each mutation leads to absence of detectable mRNA transcribed from the mutant allele, but there was no evidence that oncomodulin regulates expression of prestin or vice versa. The two mutants show distinctive patterns of auditory dysfunction. Ocmtm1e hom
