Epidemiology of distal forearm fractures in Austria between 1989 and 2010.

UNLABELLED: Only few studies have been published hitherto on country-specific incidence of distal forearm fracture. In the prevailing study, incidences were estimated, and trend analyses were performed for the entire Austrian population aged ≥50á. Incidence decreased significantly in women, but not in men, over the past 12 years of observation. INTRODUCTION: To estimate incidence of distal forearm fracture and assess incidence trends in the entire Austrian population aged ≥50á from 1989-2010 for inpatient fractures and from 1999 to 2010 for all fractures. METHODS: The number of inpatient for

Quality of screening with conventional Pap smear in Austria - a longitudinal evaluation.

BACKGROUND: In recent decades, the incidence of cervical cancer and cervical cancer mortality in Austria has declined by varying degrees. The Pap smear is to be considered a causal factor for this decline. METHODS: This longitudinal analysis is based on a data set of Pap smear assessments collected by the Committee for Quality Assurance of the Austrian Society of Cytology. Data from 15 laboratories participating in a voluntary self-monitoring program was analyzed for the time span 2004-2008. The data was analyzed in terms of smear quality and assessment quality.A rank-correlation-test for a m

Disseminated histoplasmosis in a domestic cat imported from the USA to Austria.

We present a case of disseminated histoplasmosis in a domestic cat imported from the USA to Austria. Histopathological examination revealed a systemic mycosis with most severe involvement of the lungs suggestive of Histoplasma (H.) capsulatum-infection. Molecular confirmation was based on polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequence analysis of a fungal culture from liver samples. This is the first case of feline histoplasmosis proven by molecular diagnostic technique in Europe and reported in Austria, etc.

The first case of Demodex gatoi in Austria, detected with fecal flotation.

Feline demodicosis is a rare parasitic condition caused by three different species of mites (Demodex cati, Demodex gatoi, and an unnamed species). D. gatoi inhabits the superficial skin layer (stratum corneum) and is easily transmitted between individual cats. A 2-year-old female spayed Cornish Rex was presented with alopecia and pruritus. The dermatological examination revealed bilateral alopecia and excoriations on trunk, limbs, and belly. The second cat in the household, a 3-year-old female spayed Thai, showed no clinical signs. Superficial and deep skin scrapings were performed and celloph

Epidemiology of myasthenia gravis in Austria: rising prevalence in an ageing society.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate recent epidemiological trends of myasthenia gravis (MG) in Austria. METHODS: We used the national hospital discharge register, which records the discharge diagnoses of all inpatient stays in Austria to calculate the yearly inpatient prevalence of MG from 1992 to 2009 (main or secondary diagnosis of MG). The population prevalence was indirectly estimated. The temporal and geographical variability of the inpatient prevalence was correlated with the number of practicing neurologists. RESULTS: The inpatient prevalence of 2009 was calculated

First detection of Brucella canis infections in a breeding kennel in Austria.

Brucella canis occurs almost worldwide and is a potential danger to the health of dogs and humans. The pathogen was detected in the placenta and fetuses of a Standard Poodle by direct culture and immunohistochemistry. Further, Brucellae were also isolated from the blood samples of two asymptomatic female Medium Poodles. The isolates were identified as B. canis by conventional microbiological methods and a novel Bruce-ladder multiplex PCR. Genotyping was performed by multiple locus variable number tandem repeats analysis (MLVA).

Rubella in Austria 2008-2009: no longer a typical childhood disease.

BACKGROUND: In February 2009, a cluster of rubella cases was recognized in Austria occurring between calendar weeks 3 and 7, 2009 after a long period of low rubella virus activity. A nationwide 2-dose measles, mumps, and rubella vaccination program had been introduced in 1994 to prevent this childhood illness. METHODS: An epidemiologic investigation was conducted to describe the cluster by time, place, and person. A confirmed outbreak case was defined as a febrile person (1) with generalized rash, which was laboratory confirmed or epidemiologically linked to a laboratory confirmed case and (2

A human case of travel-related rabies in Austria, September 2004.

A young male Austrian tourist, aged 23 years and unvaccinated against rabies, was bitten by a dog in Morocco in July 2004. One month later he was hospitalised in Ceuta with symptoms compatible with rabies. He died on 23 September in an Austrian hospital after a diagnosis of rabies was confirmed by FAT, IHC and RT-PCR (including sequencing) of the neck skin and the RT-PCR (including sequencing) of the pharyngeal swab. This Austrian case of laboratory confirmed rabies highlights the urgent need for reinforcement of the international recommendations for travel vaccinations.

Occurrence of Cryptosporidium sp. oocysts in fecal and water samples in Austria.

Oocysts of Cryptosporidium spp. were detected and differentiated by a modular arranged gene amplification procedure in various samples, mostly human stool, feces of herpetotaxa, and water, in different locations of South and Eastern Austria. Cryptosporidium parvum was found in stool samples of immunocompromised persons, in reptile feces, and in water samples. The presence of Cryptosporidium in an area is probably associated with high human population densities since water from protected sources in sparsely inhabited areas is rarely contaminated.

[Annual treatment rates and estimated incidence of eating disorders in Austria].

BACKGROUND: At present, the prevalence and incidence of eating disorders in Austria is unknown; not even rough estimates of countrywide annual treatment rates are available. AIMS: To assess the number of patients in Austria with eating disorders currently under treatment and to compare this rate with the estimated prevalence and incidence of eating disorders, thus providing an estimate of unrecorded cases and the appropriateness of health care for these disorders. METHODS: The number of patients being treated in major out-patient and in-patient facilities was assessed by questionnaires. Prev

First evidence of the leptospirosis natural foci of the serotype Saxkoebing in Austria.

The authors examined serologically and bacteriologically 129 wild living small mammals (9 species) in Neumarkt, in Styria. A total of 17 animals were positive (all Microtus agrestis), of these 10 serologically (6 with L. saxkoebing, 3 with L. grippotyphosa and 1 with L. sorexjalna) and 7 bacteriologically. Of the 7 isolated leptospirae-strains one did not survive up to typing, the 6 remaining were identified as L. saxkoebing. It is the first evidence of the existence of leptospirosis natural foci of the serovar saxkoebing in Austria and at the same time the first isolation of L. saxkoebing fro

Expert consensus on acute management of ventricular arrhythmias - VT network Austria.

The Arrhythmia Working Group of the Austrian Society of Cardiology (ÖKG) has set the goal of systematically structuring and organizing the acute care of patients with ventricular arrhythmias (VA), i.e. ventricular tachycardia (VT) or ventricular fibrillation (VF) in Austria. Within a consensus paper, national recommendations on the basic diagnostic work-up of VA (12-lead ECG, medical history, family history, laboratory analyses, echocardiography, search for reversible causes, ICD interrogation), as well as further medical treatment and therapeutic measures (indication of coronary angiography,

Pregnancy Outcome during the First COVID 19 Lockdown in Vienna, Austria.

The COVID 19 pandemic represents a major stress factor for non-infected pregnant women. Although maternal stress during pregnancy increases the risk of preterm birth and intrauterine growth restriction, an increasing number of studies yielded no negative effects of COVID 19 lockdowns on pregnancy outcome. The present study focused on pregnancy outcome during the first COVID 19 lockdown phase in Austria. In particular, it was hypothesized that the national lockdown had no negative effects on birth weight, low birth weight rate and preterm birth rate. In a retrospective medical record-based sing

Operational TBE incidence forecasts for Austria, Germany, and Switzerland 2019-2021.

In spring 2019, forecasts of the incidence of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) for the next 2 years, i.e. 2019 and 2020, were made for the first time. For this purpose, negative binomial regression models with 4-5 predictors were fitted to the time series of annual human TBE incidences from Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. The most important predictor for TBE incidences is the fructification index of the European beech (Fagus sylvatica) 2 years prior as a proxi for the intensity of the TBE virus transmission cycle. These forecasts were repeated in spring 2020 after the updated predictors and th

Natural history of invasive cutaneous melanoma in Styria, Austria 2001-2003.

BACKGROUND: Rising melanoma incidences have created the need of assessment of epidemiological and clinical data. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We investigated the natural history of invasive cutaneous melanoma in Styria, a province of Austria, in the years 2001-2003. 1082 patients, 511 men and 571 women, mean age 58.2 +/- 16.7 years, were collected. Besides basic melanoma data, special histologic features such as regression structures, ulceration, microsatellites and vascular invasion were investigated. Furthermore, lymph node pathology in case of sentinel node biopsy and/or lymph node dissection was

Trends in HIV infection among intravenous drug users in Innsbruck, Austria.

The first HIV test among intravenous drug users (IVDUs) at the AIDS clinic and/or the drug dependency clinic of the University of Innsbruck was the basis for the calculation of the proportions of those testing HIV seropositive annually over the period 1985-1990. The numbers testing HIV seropositive at the drug dependency clinic declined drastically, from 72.2% in 1985 to 12.5% in 1990 (chi 2 = 29.62, p less than 0.0001), whereas they rose at the AIDS clinic during this period, from 48.4% to 100% (chi 2 = 5.82, p = 0.016). Overall 132 of the 268 (49.2%) individuals examined tested HIV seroposit

[Yersinia enterocolitica--a still infrequently isolated pathogen in Austria (author's transl)].

Yersinia enterocolitica--recognized as a distinct taxonomic entity in 1964--belongs to the family of enterobacteriaceae. It has been isolated with increasing frequency from human and animal sources as well as from food and non-chlorinated water. Yersinia enterocolitica can produce enteritis in man, accompanied or followed in adults by erythema nodosum, arthralgia and/or acute arthritis. Rarely, septicaemia with a high mortality rate has been encountered. A cold-temperature enrichment method was used to examine 1135 faecal specimens; 11 were positive for Yersinia enterocolitica. Seroprevalence against measles, Austria, stratified by birth years 1922 to 2024.

BackgroundVaccination programmes initiated in the early 1970s reduced the incidence of measles in Austria, which resulted in the interruption of endemic measles virus (MeV) circulation and the achievement of elimination status in 2018. However, large outbreaks occurred in 2023 and 2024.AimBy assessing MeV-specific IgG antibody levels, we analysed if immunity recently declined due to the COVID-19 pandemic, vaccine-induced immunity waned over long term or immunity gaps already pre-existed in the population.MethodsWe determined anti-MeV antibody levels in a retrospective dataset of 56,360 diagnos
