EMG-driven shared human-robot compliant control for in-hand object manipulation in hand prostheses.

Objective. The limited functionality of hand prostheses remains one of the main reasons behind the lack of its wide adoption by amputees. Indeed, while commercial prostheses can perform a reasonable number of grasps, they are often inadequate for manipulating the object once in hand. This lack of dexterity drastically restricts the utility of prosthetic hands. We aim at investigating a novel shared control strategy that combines autonomous control of forces exerted by a robotic hand with electromyographic (EMG) decoding to perform robust in-hand object manipulation.Approach. We conduct a three

A detachable crawling robotic hand.

The human hand is often viewed as the pinnacle of dexterity, and many robotic hands adopt anthropomorphic designs, while others pursue non-anthropomorphic forms for structural balance or task optimization. However, human-like asymmetry and reliance on a single thumb limit applications that require symmetry or modularity, and most designs still struggle to combine autonomous movement, multi-object grasping, and modularity in one platform. We present a reversible finger design that allows grasping from both sides, with finger placement optimized to distribute roles and satisfy grasping and crawl

A Real-Time Mobile Robotic System for Crack Detection in Construction Using Two-Stage Deep Learning.

The deterioration of civil infrastructure poses a significant threat to public safety, yet conventional manual inspections remain subjective, labor-intensive, and constrained by accessibility. To address these challenges, this paper presents a real-time robotic inspection system that integrates deep learning perception and autonomous navigation. The proposed framework employs a two-stage neural network: a U-Net for initial segmentation followed by a Pix2Pix conditional generative adversarial network (GAN) that utilizes adversarial residual learning to refine boundary accuracy and suppress fals

A computational framework for Kármán gaiting in robotic fish: spatio-temporal perception and CPG-based reinforcement learning.

Navigating in unsteady wake flows, such as Kármán vortex streets, presents a formidable challenge for biomimetic autonomous underwater vehicles. Biological fish achieve this by utilizing their lateral line sensory systems to perceive local flow gradients and adopting an energy-efficient swimming pattern known as the Kármán gait. To translate this biological phenomenon into a practical robotics engineering solution, this paper proposes a fully computational framework focusing on the modeling and simulation of a spatio-temporal sensory system to autonomously generate the Kármán gait. To overcome

Tissue palpation in endoscopy using EIT and soft actuators.

The integration of soft robots in medical procedures has significantly improved diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, addressing safety concerns and enhancing surgeon dexterity. In conjunction with artificial intelligence, these soft robots hold the potential to expedite autonomous interventions, such as tissue palpation for cancer detection. While cameras are prevalent in surgical instruments, situations with obscured views necessitate palpation. This proof-of-concept study investigates the effectiveness of using a soft robot integrated with Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) capabilit

Implementation and Tuning of Momentum-Based Controller for Standing Balance in a Lower-limb Exoskeleton with Paraplegic User.

Lower limb exoskeletons (LLEs) are wearable devices that can restore the movement autonomy of paraplegic users. LLEs can restore the users' ability to stand upright and walk. However, most of the commercially available and clinically used LLEs rely on the user maintaining balance through the use of crutches. Recent improvements in the design and control of LLEs and other legged robots allow for autonomous balance control. In this work, we implement and evaluate a momentum-based standing balance controller in the Symbitron LLE, consisting of eight active (torque-controlled) and two passive join

Learning realistic lip motions for humanoid face robots.

Lip motion represents outsized importance in human communication, capturing nearly half of our visual attention during conversation. Yet anthropomorphic robots often fail to achieve lip-audio synchronization, resulting in clumsy and lifeless lip behaviors. Two fundamental barriers underlay this challenge. First, robotic lips typically lack the mechanical complexity required to reproduce nuanced human mouth movements; second, existing synchronization methods depend on manually predefined movements and rules, restricting adaptability and realism. Here, we present a humanoid robot face designed t

Falcon: A False Ceiling Inspection Robot.

Frequent inspections are essential for false ceilings to maintain the service infrastructures, such as mechanical, electrical, and plumbing, and the structure of false ceilings. Human-labor-based conventional inspection procedures for false ceilings suffer many shortcomings, including safety concerns. Thus, robot-aided solutions are demanded for false ceiling inspections similar to other building maintenance services. However, less work has been conducted on developing robot-aided solutions for false ceiling inspections. This paper proposes a novel design for a robot intended for false ceiling

Modeling and dynamic analysis of the worm-like part of an innovative robot applicable in colonoscopy.

BACKGROUND: The pathological conditions of the human colon may lead to cancer of the colon, which is one of the most common diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. Colonoscopy is the best diagnostic technique that can be used in colon cancer detection. However, many people do not accept this method due to the unpleasant experience, i.e. if it is not performed under sedation. As a result, changing the conventional colonoscopy into a robotic procedure seems beneficial. METHODS: In this work, a semi-autonomous device capable of propelling itself along the flexible environment has been introduced

Two-Dimensional SnS2 Interlayers Enable Vacancy-Guided Ion Migration for Stable Diffusive Memristors and Bioinspired Nociception.

The realization of sophisticated autonomous interaction in humanoid robots is currently constrained by the complexity and stochasticity of conventional sensory hardware. Volatile memristors provide a promising biomimetic alternative; however, their performance is often limited by uncontrolled ionic dynamics in disordered oxides. Here, we report two-dimensional SnS2 interlayers as an effective platform for vacancy-guided ion migration in oxide-based diffusive memristors. A solution-processed SnS2 layer with tunable sulfur vacancy density is introduced into an Ag/TaOx/SnS2/ITO heterostructure to

HDID: a method for removing dynamic objects in the 3D point cloud map.

3D point cloud maps play a critical role in the autonomous localization and navigation of robots. However, when constructing point cloud maps using scanning sensors such as LiDAR and cameras, the presence of dynamic objects in the environment can lead to map distortions and "ghost artifacts," resulting in map ping errors that severely impact the robot's localization and navigation tasks. To address this issue, we propose a novel method, to our knowledge, based on height-density occupancy descriptors and density ratios, which effectively removes dynamic objects from 3D point cloud maps. First,

Locomotion Control Strategy Design and Simulation of Parallel-Legged Insect-Scale Micro Crawling Robot.

High nonlinearity and limited computational resources create persistent challenges for achieving autonomous, stable, and accurate locomotion in insect-scale crawling robots, hindering their practical deployment. In this study, we build the mathematical models of the insect-scale micro crawling robot named PLioBot and propose a locomotion control strategy that eliminates the need for gait transitions. The locomotion transformation of the PLioBot prototype, from driving inputs to mechanical motion outputs, is decomposed into multiple motion processes. This study analyzes the theoretical models u

Linking cellular-level phenomena to brain architecture: the case of spiking cerebellar controllers.

Linking cellular-level phenomena to brain architecture and behavior is a holy grail for theoretical and computational neuroscience. Advances in neuroinformatics have recently allowed scientists to embed spiking neural networks of the cerebellum with realistic neuron models and multiple synaptic plasticity rules into sensorimotor controllers. By minimizing the distance (error) between the desired and the actual sensory state, and exploiting the sensory prediction, the cerebellar network acquires knowledge about the body-environment interaction and generates corrective signals. In doing so, the

Sclera Force Control in Robot-assisted Eye Surgery: Adaptive Force Control vs. Auditory Feedback.

Surgeon hand tremor limits human capability during microsurgical procedures such as those that treat the eye. In contrast, elimination of hand tremor through the introduction of microsurgical robots diminishes the surgeons tactile perception of useful and familiar tool-to-sclera forces. While the large mass and inertia of eye surgical robot prevents surgeon microtremor, loss of perception of small scleral forces may put the sclera at risk of injury. In this paper, we have applied and compared two different methods to assure the safety of sclera tissue during robot-assisted eye surgery. In the
