BACKGROUND: The Outcomes of Babies With Opioid Exposure (OBOE) study is an observational cohort study examining the impact of antenatal opioid exposure on outcomes from birth to 2 years of age. COVID-19 social distancing measures presented challenges to research coordinators discussing the study at length with potential participants during the birth hospitalization, which impacted recruitment, particularly among caregivers of unexposed (control) infants. In response, the OBOE study developed a digital tool (consenter video) to supplement the informed consent process, make it more engaging, and

Current practice in Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy (VRET) is that therapists ask patients about their anxiety level by means of the Subjective Unit of Discomfort (SUD) scale. With an aim of developing a home-based VRET system, this measurement ideally should be done using speech technology. In a VRET system for social phobia with scripted avatar-patient dialogues, the timing of asking patients to give their SUD score becomes relevant. This study examined three timing mechanisms: (1) dialogue dependent (i.e. naturally in the flow of the dialogue); (2) speech dependent (i.e. when both patient

Child sexual abuse (CSA) investigations require high-quality interviews, but maintaining interviewing skills long-term has been challenging. This study investigated the long-term effectiveness of avatar-based interview training for CSA investigations among 478 police officers. Participants were randomly assigned to single booster (n = 291) or double booster (n = 187) groups. Following initial training, the single booster group received reinforcement at 6 months, while the double booster group received sessions at 1 and 6 months. Results showed that initial training significantly improved inter

BACKGROUND: Whole body standing alignment (WBSA) in terms of biomechanics can be evaluated accurately only by referring the gravity line (GL) which lies on the gravity center (GC). Here, we introduce a method for estimating GL and simultaneous WBSA measurement using the EOS® imaging system and report on the reproducibility and reliability of the method.
METHODS: A 3-dimensional (3D) avatar to estimate GC was created following three steps: 3D reconstruction of the bone based on EOS images; deformation into a generic morphotype (MakeHuman statistical model) before density integration with 3D ra

Impairments in social attention play a major role in autism, but little is known about their role in development after preschool. In this study, a public speaking task was used to study social attention, its moderators, and its association with classroom learning in elementary and secondary students with higher functioning autism spectrum disorder (HFASD). Thirty-seven students with HFASD and 54 age- and intelligence quotient (IQ)-matched peers without symptoms of ASD were assessed in a virtual classroom public speaking paradigm. This paradigm assessed the ability to attend to nine avatar peer

Over a decade ago, collaborating academic cancer centers formed the Oncology Research Information Exchange Network® (ORIEN) to develop a patient-driven, federated infrastructure for oncology research. Aster Insights is the network's operational, commercial, and research partner. Together ORIEN and Aster Insights have built a unique multimodal dataset on the active engagement and consent of patients who opted into the Total Cancer Care® (TCC) protocol to contribute their data and biospecimens for research. Over 400,000 cancer patients have been enrolled in TCC, >32,500 of which have an in silic

Hepatocellular carcinoma frequently recurs after surgery, necessitating personalized clinical approaches based on tumor avatar models. However, location-dependent oxygen concentrations resulting from the dual hepatic vascular supply drive the inherent heterogeneity of the tumor microenvironment, which presents challenges in developing an avatar model. In this study, tissue samples from 12 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma are cultured directly on a chip and separated based on preference of oxygen concentration. Establishing a dual gradient system with drug perfusion perpendicular to the o

Facial displays are an important channel of communication for primates, yet it remains unclear based on which criteria monkeys evaluate facial expressions. We trained two rhesus macaques to categorize videos of four facial expression types (neutral, lip-smacking, silent bared-teeth (SBT) and open-mouth threat displays) and then tested generalization to novel individuals and avatars while measuring pupillary responses. The animals were able to categorize facial expressions and generalized their classifications to novel, untrained videos, although performance was not perfect. Misclassifications

Nonverbal cues, particularly eye-gaze, significantly shape human social interactions. Although nonhuman primates reliably follow head gaze, their capacity to use eye-gaze alone for inferring the other's focus of attention remains debated. We investigated this question using a realistic rhesus monkey head avatar that directed its gaze toward one of two LEDs (left or right), employing either eye movements alone or combined eye and head movements. After a randomly chosen interval (range: 50-400 ms) from gaze presentation, one LED transiently increased its luminance to near-threshold levels. Rhesu

This study investigated which features of AVATAR laughter are perceived threatening for individuals with a fear of being laughed at (gelotophobia), and individuals with no gelotophobia. Laughter samples were systematically varied (e.g., intensity, laughter pitch, and energy for the voice, intensity of facial actions of the face) in three modalities: animated facial expressions, synthesized auditory laughter vocalizations, and motion capture generated puppets displaying laughter body movements. In the online study 123 adults completed, the GELOPH <15 > (Ruch and Proyer, 2008a,b) and rated rando

BACKGROUND: The Visual Patient Avatar concept transforms conventional patient monitoring data into a dynamic, animated representation of the patient, enhancing situation awareness of vital signs and measurement status. Rapid recognition and response to cardiac pathologies are critical in anaesthesia and critical care. Visual Patient Heart (VPH) integrates cardiac data from the Philips "ST/AR algorithm", a feature in Philips patient monitors, into visual design elements inside the heart element of the Visual Patient Avatar, specifically aiming to improve situation awareness of arrhythmias and S

This paper presents an approach for extending 360 VR to support viewpoint translation and collaboration, without increasing the acquisition cost. The approach models the ground under the 360° image acquisition viewpoint with a planar patch, on which the user stands and walks. The planar patch is connected to the background with visual continuity. The approach anchors the user's avatar to the ground patch, and supports collaboration, with multiple avatars standing on the patch. The approach only requires defining two trivial parameters: the approximate acquisition height, and the size of the pa

Nurses frequently experience significant strain on their lower backs while lifting and moving patients, making it essential to learn proper posture that considers biomechanics for low back pain prevention. However, traditional methods make it difficult for nurses to objectively assess their posture and confirm mastery. To address this issue, a motion learning system using Virtual Reality (VR) was developed. This system displays two avatars: one that replicates the learner's posture and another that demonstrates the correct posture of an expert, allowing learners to visually recognize posture d

This study introduces an innovative framework for neurological rehabilitation by integrating brain-computer interfaces (BCI) and virtual reality (VR) technologies with the customization of three-dimensional (3D) avatars. Traditional approaches to rehabilitation often fail to fully engage patients, primarily due to their inability to provide a deeply immersive and interactive experience. This research endeavors to fill this gap by utilizing motor imagery (MI) techniques, where participants visualize physical movements without actual execution. This method capitalizes on the brain's neural mecha

In social interactions, interpersonal distance between interaction partners plays an important role in determining the status of the relationship. Interpersonal distance is an important nonverbal behavior, and is used to regulate personal space in a complex interplay with other nonverbal behaviors such as eye gaze. In social anxiety, studies regarding the impact of interpersonal distance on within-situation avoidance behavior are so far rare. Thus the present study aimed to scrutinize the relationship between gaze direction, sex, interpersonal distance, and social anxiety in social interaction

Digital environments are increasingly used to study social and pain-related behaviors. Empathy and contextual factors influence observationally induced placebo analgesia. We tested whether state empathy (i.e., immediate affective and cognitive responses to another's experience) differs when observing a demonstrator in immersive VR versus 2D video, and whether this modulation affects placebo hypoalgesia. Forty-seven participants observed a human or avatar demonstrator receiving painful stimulation with or without placebo, then experienced the same stimulations. Observation induced significant p

Vehicles with automated driving systems may provide substantial benefits to individuals who travel while seated in wheelchairs. Despite the importance of posture data for developing occupant protection systems, limited research has analysed wheelchair user posture in the context of automotive safety. In this study, we obtained three-dimensional postural data of 75 people seated in their personal wheelchairs and generated individualised baseline avatars in automotive posture using HumanShape software. Generated avatars were manually adjusted to match the posture of the field scan, and anatomica

The growing availability of affordable Virtual Reality (VR) hardware and the increasing interest in the Metaverse are driving the expansion of Social VR (SVR) platforms. These platforms allow users to embody avatars in immersive social virtual environments, enabling real-time interactions using consumer devices. Beyond merely replicating real-life social dynamics, SVR platforms offer opportunities to surpass real-world constraints by augmenting these interactions. One example of such augmentation is Artificial Facial Mimicry (AFM), which holds significant potential to enhance social experience

OBJECTIVE: In the attentional bias (AB) phenomenon, eating disorder (ED) patients show a tendency to pay more attention to self-attributed unattractive body parts than to other body parts. However, little research has focused on gender differences in body-related attention, controlling for body dissatisfaction (BD). This study aimed to assess gender differences in AB toward specific weight- or nonweight-related body parts using a virtual reality (VR)-based embodiment technique and an eye-tracking AB assessment.
METHOD: Forty-five women (23 with high BD and 22 with low BD) and 40 men (20 with
