Effects of the autoimmune uterine/maternal environment upon cortical ectopias, behavior and autoimmunity.

NZB and BXSB mice develop autoimmune disease and learn poorly on avoidance tasks. In addition, many of these mice have ectopic collections of neurons, which occur prenatally, in layer I of the cerebral neocortex. The purpose of these experiments was to evaluate the contribution of the uterine/maternal environment upon these variables by transferring fertilized ova to an autoimmune or a non-autoimmune maternal host. In Experiment 1 fertilized DBA ova were transferred into the uteri of BXSB maternal recipients. Later, these animals and conventionally reared DBAs were tested for paw preference, s

Nociceptin/orphanin FQ and nocistatin on learning and memory impairment induced by scopolamine in mice.

1. Nociceptin, also known as orphanin FQ, is an endogenous ligand for the orphan opioid receptor-like receptor 1 (ORL1) and involves in various functions in the central nervous system (CNS). On the other hand, nocistatin is recently isolated from the same precursor as nociceptin and blocks nociceptin-induced allodynia and hyperalgesia. 2. Although ORL1 receptors which display a high degree of sequence homology with classical opioid receptors are abundant in the hippocampus, little is known regarding their role in learning and memory. 3. The present study was designed to investigate whether noc

Frontal Midline Theta Promotes Context-dependent Aversive Learning in Social Anxiety.

Social anxiety is reliably characterized by biases toward avoidance and aversive learning. Here, we examined the neurocomputational processes underlying these biases and examined whether these biases persist across different social contexts. A sample of 154 participants (84% female, mean age = 20.42 years) with subclinical to minimal levels of social anxiety completed a probabilistic selection task in two contexts: performing alone and under social scrutiny. We analyzed frontal midline theta (FM-theta) EEG activity to uncover neurocomputational processes underlying aversive learning in social

A parametric study of the effects of the noradrenaline neurotoxin DSP4 on avoidance acquisition and noradrenaline neurones in the CNS of the rat.

The effects of various doses of DSP4 on two-way active avoidance acquisition in rats and on central noradrenaline neurones were compared. Doses of DSP4 from 3 mg kg-1 i.p. and upwards injected one week before the onset of the avoidance trials significantly impaired two-way avoidance learning. The learning impairment caused by DSP4 (50 mg kg-1 i.p.) lasted for at least 10 weeks. Desipramine (20 mg kg-1) injected either 30 or 60 min before DSP4 (50 mg kg-1) antagonized the active avoidance impairment. A high dose of DSP4 (50 mg kg-1 i.p.) produced profound decreases in dopamine-beta-hydroxylase

Factors in the modification by isolation of electroconvulsive shock-produced retrograde amnesia in the rat.

It has been demonstrated that placing rats in a sensory-restricted environment during the electronconvulsive shock- (ECS) retention interval following 1-trial appetitive learning will prevent or eliminate ECS-produced retrograde amnesia. The first study replicated this finding with a 1-trial aversive learning task, indicating that this effect is not task specific. The second study attempted to determine whether illumination or the restricted environment was the crucial factor in this penomenon. Rats placed in the light during the ECS-retention interval, whether restricted or in the colony, dem

Weaker situations: Uncertainty reveals individual differences in learning: Implications for PTSD.

Few individuals who experience trauma develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Therefore, the identification of individual differences that signal increased risk for PTSD is important. Lissek et al. (2006) proposed using a weak rather than a strong situation to identify individual differences. A weak situation involves less-salient cues as well as some degree of uncertainty, which reveal individual differences. A strong situation involves salient cues with little uncertainty, which produce consistently strong responses. Results from fear conditioning studies that support this hypothesis a

Investigation of narcotics and antitussives using drug discrimination techniques.

Rats learned drug discriminations in a shock-escape T-maze task. They were trained to turn right in the maze following injection of a drug (D) and left when no injection (N) was given. Number of training sessions before criterion performance (STC) was used to indicate degree of discriminability of the training drug. STC decreased monotonically as dosage increased, and reached a minimum of 3 to 26 with various agonists. Most agonists were not highly discriminable. Daily maintenance injections of morphine, 200 to 600 mg/kg, increased the STC of morphine, 15 mg/kg, significantly, but complete tol

Somatostatin and (D-Trp8, D-Cys14)-somatostatin delay extinction and reverse electroconvulsive shock induced amnesia in rats.

In the present study the effects of somatostatin and its analogs on active avoidance behavior, electroconvulsive shock (ECS)-induced retrograde amnesia, and spatial-discrimination learning were compared in rats. (D-Trp8, D-Cys14)-somatostatin (as did the somatostatin molecule itself) delayed the extinction of active avoidance behavior, antagonized ECS-induced amnesia, and did not modify spatial-discrimination learning. Des-Asn5-(D-Trp8, D-Ser13) somatostatin and des-AA1,2,4,5,12,13,-(D-Trp8) somatostatin did not influence these behaviors. The data suggest that certain parts of the somatostatin

The influence of worry and avoidance on the Iowa Gambling Task.

BACKGROUND: It has been proposed that worry in individuals with Generalized Anxiety Disorder may be reinforced by a positive effect of worry on decision making, as reflected by a steeper learning curve on the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT). We hypothesized that this apparent positive effect of worry is dependent on the IGT parameters, in particular the absence of an opportunity to avoid decisions. OBJECTIVE: (1) To replicate previous findings on the effect of worry on IGT performance. (2) To examine the influence of avoidance opportunity on IGT performance. We hypothesized that the positive effect

Benzodiazepine (omega) receptor partial agonists and the acquisition of conditioned fear in mice.

It is well established that benzodiazepines can produce anterograde amnesia in humans and interfere with the acquisition of passive avoidance and spatial responses in rodents. However, the extent to which the disruption of learning is a secondary effect of the sedation produced by these drugs has not been clearly established. In order to investigate this question, the effects of several BZ (omega) receptor partial agonists were studied on the acquisition of conditioned fear (passive avoidance learning) in mice. As these drugs have been shown to produce anticonvulsant and anxiolytic-like effect

Learning and memory-enhancing effects of Ro 15-4513: a comparison with flumazenil.

Synthetic benzodiazepines produce an anterograde amnesia, which can be reversed by selective benzodiazepine antagonists or inverse agonists. It has therefore been suggested that the memory-enhancing effects of the antagonists are due to antagonism of an endogenous "benzodiazepine-like" endocoid. If the memory-enhancing effects of the benzodiazepine antagonists are determined predominantly by the antagonism of such endogenous benzodiazepine-ligands, then it could be hypothesized that administration of an inverse agonist, which produces effects functionally opposite to those of benzodiazepine ag

Measuring emotional memory in the elevated T-maze using a training-to-criterion procedure.

The elevated T-maze, an ethologically based test, has been used to investigate the effects of anxiolytic drugs on memory and the relationships between neural systems involved in such modulation. This test allows the measurement in the same rat of two kinds of aversively motivated behaviors--inhibitory avoidance and one-way escape. The apparatus consists of three arms of equal dimensions, elevated 50 cm from the floor. One arm is enclosed by walls and stands perpendicular to the two open arms. Placing the rat at the end of the enclosed arm and recording the time to withdraw from this arm during

Effect of alcohol intake on some disturbances induced by chronic exposure to carbon disulphide in rats. I. Behavioural alterations.

Female white Wistar rats were exposed to CS2 vapour (0.8 mg CS2/1 air) 11 months and to 10% ethanol as the only drinking liquid for the last 3 months of exposure. Spontaneous exploratory motor activity (SEMA), open-field behaviour, passive avoidance performance and the avoidance acquisition were tested. Ethanol did not change the exploratory motor activity and behaviour of CS2-exposed rats in the open-field and passive avoidance tests but it affected their performance in the conditioned avoidance test. The analysis of data suggests that ethanol may adversely affect memory and learning ability

Paradoxical sleep deprivation impairs acquisition, consolidation, and retrieval of a discriminative avoidance task in rats.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of paradoxical sleep deprivation (PSD) for 96 h on the learning/memory processes in rats submitted to the plus-maze discriminative avoidance task (PM-DAT), which simultaneously evaluates learning, memory, anxiety and motor function. Four experiments were performed in which rats were submitted to: (1) post-training and pre-test PSD; (2) post-training or pre-test PSD; (3) pre-training PSD or pre-training paradoxical sleep (PS) rebound (24 h) and (4) pre-test PSD rebound. Concerning Experiment I, post-training and pre-test PSD induced me

Avoidance of bacterial and viral threat is affected by infection status in a terrestrial snail.

Parasites and infections are one of the major costs associated with group living and high host density. Although infection threat can influence the behavior of both uninfected and infected individuals, investigations have focused on the responses of uninfected individuals. Here we describe the effects on, and response to, terrestrial snails, Cepaea nemoralis, treated with either a bacterial or viral pathogenic stimulus. Brief exposure of untreated (uninfected) snails to the mucus associated chemical cues of snails acutely treated with either the bacterial cell wall component, lipopolysaccharid

Environmental enrichment influences the relationship between lateralization and neophobia in zebrafish larvae.

Neophobia, the aversion to novelty, is a conserved survival trait that influences individuals’ decision-making. In many species, juveniles showed less avoidance of novelty than adults, likely due to their limited experience and their need to gather environmental information. A challenging question is how environmental factors shape sensory processing and behavioural responses. Due to the rapid development of their nervous system and high sensitivity to environmental conditions, zebrafish (Danio rerio) represent a valuable model for investigating the phenotypic plasticity of neophobia. Explicitness, disgust, and safe sex behavior: A message experiment with U.S. adults.

Sexual health risks are challenging to communicate given the potential negative reactions of target audiences to explicit language. Grounded in research on pathogen avoidance, the current study examined the impact of varying levels of explicit language on message perceptions and safe sex behavioral intentions. U.S. adults (N = 498) were randomly assigned to view messages detailing pandemic safe sexual behavior that contained either low or high levels of explicit language. High explicit language significantly increased perceived disgust which also indirectly linked high explicit language with i

Walking through a narrow opening improves collision avoidance behavior in a patient with stroke and unilateral spatial neglect: an ABA single-case design.

We investigated the effect of a 3-week intervention-wherein a patient with unilateral spatial neglect walks through a narrow opening while entering from the contralesional side-to improve walking ability or ADL. A 66-year-old man was diagnosed with right parietal subcortical hemorrhage. We used an ABA single-case design; period B was set as the intervention. The intervention improved the continuous walking distance and balance ability and decreased the number of collisions when walking through the narrow opening; however, it exerted minimal effect on ADL. Thus, the intervention may effectively

A systematic review of visual avoidance of faces in socially anxious individuals: Influence of severity, type of social situation, and development.

Although visual avoidance of faces is a hallmark feature of social anxiety disorder (SAD) on clinical and theoretical grounds, empirical support is equivocal. This review aims to clarify under which conditions socially anxious individuals display visual avoidance of faces. Through a systematic search in Web of Science and PubMed up to March 2019 we identified 61 publications that met the inclusion criteria. We discuss the influence of three factors on the extent to which socially anxious individuals avoid looking at faces: (a) severity of social anxiety symptoms (diagnosed SAD versus High Soci
