Changes in the diversity and composition of gut microbiota in pigeon squabs infected with Trichomonas gallinae.

Pigeons, as the only altricial birds in poultry, are the primary Trichomonas gallinae (T. gallinae) host. To study the effects of T. gallinae infection on gut microbiota, we compared the microbiota diversity and composition in gastrointestinal (GI) tracts of pigeons at the age of 14 and 21 day with different degrees of T. gallinae infection. Thirty-six nestling pigeons were divided into three groups: the healthy group, low-grade and high-grade trichomonosis group. Then, the crop, small intestine and rectum contents were obtained for sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene V3-V4 hypervariable region. T

Shifts in Lachnospira and Clostridium sp. in the 3-month stool microbiome are associated with preschool age asthma.

Asthma is a chronic disease of the airways affecting one in ten children in Westernized countries. Recently, our group showed that specific bacterial genera in early life are associated with atopy and wheezing in 1-year-old children. However, little is known about the link between the early life gut microbiome and the diagnosis of asthma in preschool age children. To determine the role of the gut microbiota in preschool age asthma, children up to 4 years of age enrolled in the Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Development (CHILD) study were classified as asthmatic (n=39) or matched healthy

In vitro antimicrobial susceptibility of Helcococcus kunzii and molecular analysis of macrolide and tetracycline resistance.

Thanks to the recent advent of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) technology, Helcococcus kunzii is now easily identifiable and considered as an opportunistic pathogen. However, data about antimicrobial susceptibilities remain very limited. The aim of the study was, then, to assess its in vitro susceptibility to 18 antimicrobial agents and to investigate the genetic basis of macrolide and tetracycline resistance. Thirty-nine human clinical isolates of H. kunzii collected from 2008 to 2013 were studied, as well as the type strain ATCC 51366(T). Minimum inhibi

Gut microbiota and derived metabolomic profiling in glaucoma with progressive neurodegeneration.

Glaucoma is a multifactorial, neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). Crosstalk between the gut microbiota and host is involved in the progression of many neurodegenerative diseases, although little is known about its role in glaucoma. To investigated the alterations of the gut microbiota and derived metabolites in glaucomatous rats, and the interaction with RGCs, we performed 16S rRNA (V1-V9) sequencing and untargeted metabolomic analyses. The microbial composition differed significantly between the two groups, and the diversity of cecal bacteria

Skin exposure to sunlight: a factor modulating the human gut microbiome composition.

BACKGROUND: The gut microbiome has been increasingly acknowledged as playing a pivotal role in human health. Therefore, a number of studies have focused on variables that impact its microbial structure and consequent functionality. A wide range of factors, such as diet, age, sex, life stage, behavior, ethnicity, and diseases have been considered, and strong links were set out. However, some aspects regarding the microbiome determinants are still under-explored. DISCUSSION: Recently, Bosman et al. presented evidence that skin exposure to narrowband UVB light modulated the gut microbiome of a s

A fundamental study on biological removal of N2O in the presence of oxygen.

The biodegradation of N2O by a non-acclimated secondary activated sludge in the presence of O2 was studied. Batch tests with a headspace containing an initial N2O concentration of ∼400 mg m(-3) (∼200 ppmv) and initial O2 gas concentrations of 0%, 1%, 2%, 5% and 21% were investigated. The effect of O2 on the biokinetic parameters qmax (maximum specific N2O uptake rate) and KS (half-saturation constant), as well as on the bacterial population structure, was evaluated. A complete N2O removal was recorded in the presence of up to 2% O2, while O2 at 5% and 21% mediated inhibitions of 37% and 95% in

Unravelling the impacts of captivity on saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) cloacal bacterial communities and physiology.

This study addresses a significant research gap in understanding the impacts of captivity on the bacteriome and physiology of saltwater crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus). Despite their ecological and cultural significance, crocodilians are a taxon that remains underexplored in microbiome research. We investigated cloacal bacteriome samples from both wild and captive populations to identify compositional and functional differences resulting from captivity. Our findings reveal significant alterations in bacterial diversity and community structure in captive crocodiles, with notable shifts at both

Bicuculline reversal of aminoglycoside O-nucleotidyltransferase EanT-1-mediated kanamycin resistance.

BACKGROUND: Kanamycin, an aminoglycoside, is an effective broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent against bacterial infections. However, the clinical efficacy of aminoglycosides has been overshadowed by the emergence of resistance mechanisms involving enzyme-mediated covalent modifications. Aminoglycoside nucleotidyltransferases (ANTs) inactivate aminoglycosides via AMP group transfer. Elucidating their molecular mechanisms and identifying effective inhibitors are critical for combating antimicrobial resistance. METHODS: Exiguobacterium sp. PL221A was isolated from hospital sewage under selection

Evaluation of gut microbiota of iranian patients with celiac disease, non-celiac wheat sensitivity, and irritable bowel syndrome: are there any similarities?

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Individuals with celiac disease (CD), non-celiac wheat sensitivity (NCWS), and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), show overlapping clinical symptoms and experience gut dysbiosis. A limited number of studies so far compared the gut microbiota among these intestinal conditions. This study aimed to investigate the similarities in the gut microbiota among patients with CD, NCWS, and IBS in comparison to healthy controls (HC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective study, in total 72 adult subjects, including CD (n = 15), NCWS (n = 12), IBS (n = 30), and HC (n = 15) were recr

Effects of magnesium-modified biochar on antibiotic resistance genes and microbial communities in chicken manure composting.

Abatement of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in livestock manure by composting has attracted attention. This study investigated the effect of adding magnesium-modified biochar (MBC) on ARGs and microbial communities in chicken manure composting. Twelve genes for tetracyclines, sulfonamides, and macrolides, and mobile genetic elements were measured in the compost pile. The results showed that after 45 days of the composting, the treatment groups of MBC had longer high temperature periods, significantly higher germination indices (GI) and lower phytotoxicity. There were four major dominant ph

Saccharibacteria (TM7), but not other bacterial taxa, are associated with childhood caries regardless of age in a South China population.

BACKGROUND: Human microbiome dysbiosis is related to various human diseases, and identifying robust and consistent biomarkers that apply in different populations is a key challenge. This challenge arises when identifying key microbial markers of childhood caries. METHODS: We analyzed unstimulated saliva and supragingival plaque samples from children of different ages and sexes, performed 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and sought to identify whether consistent markers exist among subpopulations by using a multivariate linear regression model. RESULTS: We found that Acinetobacter and Clostridiales

Associations between intestinal microbiota, fecal properties, and dietary fiber conditions: The Japanese traditional medicine Junchoto ameliorates dietary fiber deficit-induced constipation with F/B ratio alteration in rats.

Changes in the intestinal microbiota are known to occur in constipated patients. Dietary fiber restriction presents obstacles to appropriate defecation and affects fecal properties, but the relationship between fecal microbiota and fecal morphological properties remains obscure. Therefore, we examined the influence of fiber diets on the fecal microbiome and properties in rats, and the effectiveness of the Japanese traditional medicine Junchoto (JCT) in rats with fiber deficit-induced constipation. Rats were fed three different fiber diets with varying cellulose contents (0 %, FFD; 5 %, ND; 15
