OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine associations between the degree of central sensitization (CS) and remote muscle performance in people with chronic low back pain (CLBP).
METHODS: The 2011 fibromyalgia (FM) criteria and severity scales (2011 FM survey) were used as a surrogate measure of CS to divide the participants into 2 groups: FM-positive CLBP and FM-negative CLBP. Measures related to central sensitization included the 2011 FM survey and pressure pain threshold of the thumbnail. Measures related to muscle performance included neck flexor muscle strength and endurance an

BACKGROUND: The paraspinal and psoas muscles have been considered to be essentially important for stabilizing the spinal column, and the muscle degeneration was found to exist in degenerative spinal kyphosis (DSK) patients. However, it is still not clear the relationship between muscle degeneration and spinal-pelvic alignment. The purpose of this study was to determine the correlations between the individual muscle degeneration at each lumbar spinal level and spinal-pelvic parameters in DSK patients.
METHODS: The imaging data of 32 patients with DSK were retrospectively analyzed. The fat infi

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: To determine if psoas, multifidus, and erector spina muscle volume at intervertebral disc levels differ in patients with lumbosacral transitional vertebrae (LSTV) and low back pain (LBP), and in LBP patients without LSTV.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 101 patients that underwent lumbar spinal MRI due to LBP. The patients were divided into two groups according to the presence of LSTV, as those with LSTV (LSTV group) and those without LSTV (control group). Those in the LSTV group were classified according to Castellvi classification, and whet

BACKGROUND: The prediction of lumbar back muscle degeneration is important because chronic low back pain and spino-pelvic imbalance have been known to be related to it. However, gender difference should be considered because there are different quality and volume of muscles between genders. The purpose of this study was to search for clinical and radiological factors to predict the degree of lumbar back muscle degeneration according to gender difference.
METHODS: We reviewed 112 patients (44 men and 68 women) with spinal stenosis who underwent a decompressive surgery between 1 January 2009 an

Low-back pain (LBP) in women gymnasts is relatively common. This investigation was performed to evaluate the effects of a preseason training program for the trunk extensor, lateral flexor, and flexor muscles on LBP occurrence during the subsequent competitive season. The training group consisted of 15 collegiate women gymnasts. The control group consisted of 15 nonathlete collegiate women. Pre- and posttesting for all participants consisted of static endurance tests for the trunk extensors, lateral flexors, and flexors. After pretesting, the training group completed 10 weeks of biweekly traini

BACKGROUND: The socioeconomic burden of low back pain (LBP) is increasing, and two potential triggers of LBP (disc degeneration and paraspinal muscle fatty infiltration) have attracted significant attention in recent years. Previous studies have proposed that LBP is related to the morphology and composition of paraspinal muscles. However, the results remain conflicting and controversial.
PURPOSE: This study aims to review and analyze the imaging findings of paraspinal muscle (Multifidus[MF], erector spinae [ES],psoas major[PM],quadratus lumborum[QL]) morphology (functional cross-sectional are

One hundred fifty 45-55-year-old men were divided into three groups: those with healthy backs, recurrent low back pain (LBP), and chronic LBP. These groups were studied with respect to anthropometry, spinal canal width, spinal sagittal configuration and flexibility, and the flexibility of the hamstrings musculature with straight leg raising (SLR). There were no differences between the groups with respect to anthropometry. The group with healthy backs had significantly greater lordosis and sagittal flexibility than the other groups. The width of the spinal canal was correlated to body height. T

BACKGROUND: To the best of our knowledge, there have been no reports on the points at which the denervated multifidus and erector spinae muscles become reinnervated after pedicle screw fixation and posterior fusion in patients with lumbar degenerative diseases. Our study was designed to confirm reinnervation of denervated paraspinal muscles following pedicle screw fixation and posterior fusion and to confirm alleviation of the patients' lower back pain (LBP).
METHODS: In this prospective study, we enrolled 67 patients who had undergone pedicle screw fixation and posterior fusion. The surgery

Core exercises on an unstable surface increase trunk muscle activity, especially for local muscle groups. Therefore, there is a possibility that exercises on an unstable surface would be effective in the rehabilitation of non-specific chronic low back pain (NSCLBP). The present study assessed trunk muscle activities during bridge exercise on the floor and two kinds of unstable surfaces, i.e., a balance ball and the BOSU, for individuals with and without NSCLBP. This study enrolled 17 and 18 young participants with and without NSCLBP, respectively. In the balance ball condition, both groups sho

BACKGROUND: The role of exercise therapy in improving pain-related clinical outcomes and trunk muscle activity in patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP) has been widely reported. There is little information on the effect of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) training in patients with CLBP. The purpose of the present study was therefore to investigate the persistence of the effects of PNF training on pain intensity, functional disability, patient satisfaction, health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and lower back muscle activity in patients with CLBP.
METHODS: Forty-two partic

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is one of the most disabling diseases and a major health issue. Despite the evidence of a link between paraspinal and gluteal muscle dysfunction and LBP, it is unknown whether aquatic exercises can lead to improvements in paraspinal and gluteal muscle morphology and function, and whether improvements in overall muscle health are associated with improvements in patients' outcomes. The unique properties of water allow a water-based exercise program to be tailored to the needs of those suffering from LBP. This study uses magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to investig
