Antimicrobial resistance in gram-positive bacteria.

Gram-positive bacteria are common causes of bloodstream and other infections in hospitalized patients in the United States, and the percentage of nosocomial bloodstream infections caused by antibiotic-resistant gram-positive bacteria is increasing. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) are of particular concern. In the United States, approximately 60% of staphylococcal infections in the intensive care unit are now caused by MRSA, and percentages continue to rise. Outbreaks of hospital-acquired MRSA (HA-MRSA) are typically the result of cl

Type IV transporters of pathogenic bacteria.

Type IV transporters are produced by several bacterial pathogens such as Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Bordetella pertussis, Brucella spp., Bartonella henselae, Helicobacter pylori and Legionella pneumophila. These transporters are critical for the pathogenic process in that they export important virulence factors across the membranes of the bacteria. Although the virulence factors that are exported by these transporters can be either nucleic acid or protein, the general mechanism of transport appears to be similar for members of this family. Recent findings have shed light on the architecture of

[Methanotrophic bacteria of acid sphagnum bogs].

Acid sphagnum bogs cover a considerable part of the territory of Russia and are an important natural source of biogenic methane, which is formed in their anaerobic layers. A considerable portion of this methane is consumed in the aerobic part of the bog profile by acidophilic methanotrophic bacteria, which comprise the methane filter of sphagnum bogs and decrease CH4 emission to the atmosphere. For a long time, these bacteria escaped isolation, which became possible only after the elucidation of the optimal conditions of their functioning in situ: pH 4.5 to 5.5; temperature, from 15 to 20 degr

Stress responses in lactic acid bacteria.

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) constitute a heterogeneous group of bacteria that are traditionally used to produce fermented foods. The industrialization of food bio-transformations increased the economical importance of LAB, as they play a crucial role in the development of the organoleptique and hygienic quality of fermented products. Therefore, the reliability of starter strains in terms of quality and functional properties (important for the development of aroma and texture), but also in terms of growth performance and robustness has become essential. These strains should resist to adverse con

Preparation of genomic DNA from bacteria.

Most protocols for the preparation of bacterial genomic DNA consist of lysis, followed by incubation with a nonspecific protease and a series of extractions prior to precipitation of the nucleic acids. Such procedures effectively remove contaminating proteins, but are not effective in removing exopolysaccharides which can interfere with the activity of enzymes such as restriction endonucleases and ligases. In this unit, however, the protease incubation is followed by a CTAB extraction whereby CTAB complexes both with polysaccharides and with residual protein, effectively removing both in the s

Do bacteria cause exacerbations of COPD?

Exacerbations of COPD, which include combinations of dyspnea, cough, wheezing, increased sputum production (and a change in its color to green or yellow), are common. The role of bacterial infection in causing these episodes and the value of antibiotic therapy for them are debated. An assessment of the microbiological studies indicates that conventional bacterial respiratory pathogens, such as Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae, are absent in about 50% of attacks. The frequency of isolating these organisms, which often colonize the bronchi of patients in stable condition, does

Interactions between periodontopathogenic bacteria and cytokines.

Cytokines produced in response to plaque bacteria clearly play a key role in the periodontal diseases. However, we know very little about the interactions between cytokines and periodontopathogenic bacteria. The aims of this study were to determine whether the key pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) and IL-6 could affect the growth of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans or Porphyromonas gingivalis and to determine whether these organisms could hydrolyse IL-1 beta, IL-6 or the anti-inflammatory IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra). Culture medium containing up to 100 ng/ml o

Chloroform mineralization by toluene-oxidizing bacteria.

Seven toluene-oxidizing bacterial strains (Pseudomonas mendocina KR1, Burkholderia cepacia G4, Pseudomonas putida F1, Pseudomonas pickettii PKO1, and Pseudomonas sp. strains ENVPC5, ENVBF1, and ENV113) were tested for their ability to degrade chloroform (CF). The greatest rate of CF oxidation was achieved with strain ENVBF1 (1.9 nmol/min/mg of cell protein). CF also was oxidized by P. mendocina KR1 (0.48 nmol/min/mg of cell protein), strain ENVPC5 (0.49 nmol/min/mg of cell protein), and Escherichia coli DH510B(pRS202), which contained cloned toluene 4-monooxygenase genes from P. mendocina KR1

Lactic acid bacteria and human health.

Although claims for health and nutritional benefits have been made for lactic acid bacteria in fermented dairy products for nearly a century, the nutritional and therapeutic value of these organisms is still controversial. This article will review the scientific basis of these claims. There are numerous studies showing fermentation of food with lactobacilli increase the quantity, availability, digestibility, and assimilability of nutrients. The basis for this conclusion comes from direct measurements of vitamin synthesis and from increased feed efficiency when fermented products are fed to ani

Causal bacteria of pyogenic liver abscess.

This is a review of bacteriologic data on 175 patients with pyogenic liver abscesses seen over a period of 8 years at Veterans General Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan. Positive cultures were obtained from liver aspirates in 151 of the 163 patients in which cultures were taken. One hundred and twenty patient specimens grew one isolate and 31 specimens grew two or more isolates. A total of 149 aerobic gram-negative rods, 25 aerobic cocci and 29 anaerobes were isolated. Ninety of the 159 patients from whom blood was taken had positive cultures. In 11 patients, two or more isolates were grown concurrentl

Gram-negative bacteria and B27 disease.

The role of infection in ankylosing spondylitis is speculative and different studies by several groups have yielded conflicting results. The role of infection, however, in reactive arthritis and Reiter's syndrome is well established. The Grampian region has experienced three outbreaks of gastroenteritis, two due to Campylobacter jejuni and one due to Salmonella typhimurium. These outbreaks have allowed a study of reactive arthritis in the affected population following these infections. These studies do not allow accurate estimate of the frequency of reactive arthritis, largely because of diffi

[Intestinal bacteria incriminated in reactive arthritis].

Amongst the numerous microbial species which constitute the intestinal flora, three bacteria belonging to the family of Enterobacteria have been incriminated in cases of reactive arthritis: the Salmonellae, the Shigellae and the Klebsiellae. These bacteria are easy to isolate and identify, but they are difficult to classify because of the multiplicity of serotypes and species. The participation of these bacteria in reactive arthritis is far from being clear: their isolation does not always have pathological significance, as these bacteria are usually opportunistic pathogens. The serological re

Bacteria newly recognized as nosocomial pathogens.

Bacteria recently recognized as nosocomial pathogens generally fall into three categories: those that grow slowly, those that are fastidious in their nutritional or atmospheric requirements and those that resemble commensals. Each characteristic has contributed to the delay in perceiving their importance. Mycobacterium chelonei and Myco. fortuitum--which grow slowly, although characterized as "rapid-growing" mycobacteria--cause sternal osteomyelitis, pericarditis and endocarditis after cardiac surgery as well as other wound infections after many types of surgery. Myco. chelonei-like organisms

Lactase degradation by human enteric bacteria.

Twelve non-pathogenic bacteria and two yeast strains isolated from the duodenal aspirate or mucosa of five children with diarrhoea were tested for their ability to degrade non-human lactase in vitro. Both yeast strains and eleven of the bacterial strains significantly reduced lactase activity. A similar action on human lactase could be a cause of lactose intolerance.

Bacteria in experimentally infected cavity preparations.

The presence of bacteria on cavity walls was assessed histologically following experimental infection by inserting soft carious human dentin or guttapercha temporary filings in 40 monkey teeth. Eighty-five infected cavities which had been restored using zinc oxide-eugenol cement (34 teeth), Ca(OH)2 (39 teeth) or amalgam (12 teeth) were also evaluated. Bacteria could regularly be demonstrated in cavities where soft carious human dentin had remained in the cavities for 82 d, but not, or only very rarely, in any of the other series. It was concluded that vital dentin has considerable resistance a

Corneal rings with gram-negative bacteria.

Corneal rings have been described with corneal ulcerations caused by Gram-negative bacteria. Corneal rings were produced by intracorneal injections of viable Pseudomonas aeruginosa as well as heat-inactivated suspensions of Gram-negative bacteria (P aeruginosa and Escherichia coli) but not Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus) or Freund's adjuvant. It is suggested that endotoxin is the factor responsible for their production since purified endotoxin produced corneal rings after intracorneal injection. Histopathological examination of the areas corresponding to the corneal rings disclo
