Assays for Identification and Differentiation of Brucella Species: A Review.

Brucellosis is one of the most important and widespread bacterial zoonoses worldwide. Cases are reported annually across the range of known infectious species of the genus Brucella. Globally, Brucella melitensis, primarily hosted by domestic sheep and goats, affects large proportions of livestock herds, and frequently spills over into humans. While some species, such as Brucella abortus, are well controlled in livestock in areas of North America, the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem supports the species in native wild ungulates with occasional spillover to livestock. Elsewhere in North America, o

The immunomodulatory effect of antimicrobial peptide HPA3P restricts Brucella abortus 544 infection in BALB/c mice.

The discovery of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) in recent years has been promising for the treatment of multidrug resistant pathogenic microbes. Brucellosis is still considered one of the most common zoonoses in the world. In this study, we evaluated the effect HPA3P peptide in the bacterial uptake and intracellular growth of Brucella abortus (B. abortus) 544 in murine macrophages RAW 264.7. HPA3P was further utilized in a mouse model for infection and treatment. This peptide did not show cytotoxicity or bactericidal effect to B. abortus. However, it inhibited bacterial internalization at 0, 15

Streptococcus suis in Asia: epidemiology, transmission and zoonotic risk at the animal-human interface.

Streptococcus suis is a swine-associated bacterial pathogen of zoonotic relevance in Asia, where its epidemiology reflects the intersection of widespread porcine carriage, diverse production systems and human exposure pathways. Across Asian swine populations, S. suis circulates endemically, with asymptomatic carriage established early in life and maintained through to slaughter, providing a persistent reservoir for both animal disease and zoonotic spillover. Reported detection frequencies and serotype composition of S. suis varied widely across countries and studies. While serotype 2 remained

Cultural human-snake interactions in the festa dei serpari as an opportunity for the surveillance of bacterial pathogens of zoonotic concern.

Reptiles harbour a wide range of pathogen species, some of which can pose risks to human health. Among them, snakes serve as valuable sentinels for monitoring pathogens, particularly in some cultural contexts where animal-human interactions offer a unique opportunity to delve into bacterial dynamics throughout the years. This is the case of the annual serpent ritual "festa dei serpari" in Cocullo, in central Italy renowned for the San Domenico snakes festival. This study conducted a retrospective analysis of a comprehensive database of bacterial pathogens associated with wild snakes captured d

A systematic review on reverse-zoonosis: Global impact and changes in transmission patterns.

Reverse zoonosis or zooanthroponosis is the transfer of pathogens from humans to animals. Although less studied than zoonotic diseases, this phenomenon poses significant risks to both animal and public health. The increasing human-animal interactions driven by urbanization, globalization, and environmental changes have exacerbated the occurrence of reverse zoonosis. This review evaluated the global impact and transmission patterns of reverse zoonosis, highlighting the anthropogenic and intrinsic factors contributing to its emergence. The study performed a systematic review and included 91 scie

Characterization of microbiota diversity of engorged ticks collected from dogs in China.

BACKGROUND: Ticks are one of the most common external parasites in dogs, and are associated with the transmission of a number of major zoonoses, which result in serious harm to human health and even death. Also, the increasing number of pet dogs and pet owners in China has caused concern regarding human tick-borne illnesses. Accordingly, studies are needed to gain a complete understanding of the bacterial composition and diversity of the ticks that parasitize dogs. OBJECTIVES: To date, there have been relatively few reports on the analysis of the bacterial community structure and diversity in

Accelerating Campylobacter zoonosis in the Anthropocene.

Intensive poultry farming has transformed global bird populations, concentrating billions of chickens into dense industrial systems that fundamentally reshape ecological space. As birds are important pathogen reservoirs, these changes can have important consequences for the spread of zoonoses including Campylobacter jejuni-the leading cause of bacterial gastroenteritis. Analyzing 2,747 genomes from chickens and wild birds, we show that poultry intensification has eroded historic host-strain associations and created a new and expanding ecological niche. Phylogenetic reconstructions reveal an es

A Review on the Methodology and Use of the Pregnant Mouse Model in the Study of Brucella Reproductive Pathogenesis and Its Abortifacient Effect.

Brucellosis is one of the most common and widespread bacterial zoonoses and is caused by Gram-negative bacteria belonging to the genus Brucella. These organisms are able to infect and replicate within the placenta, resulting in abortion, one of the main clinical signs of brucellosis. Although the mouse model is widely used to study Brucella virulence and, more recently, to evaluate the protection of new vaccines, there is no clear consensus on the experimental conditions (e.g., mouse strains, doses, routes of inoculation, infection/pregnancy time) and the natural host reproducibility of the pr

Investigation of Salmonella spp. and Escherichia coli in the Snake-eyed lizard (Ophisops elegans) (Sauria, Lacertidae) in the Çankırı Province of Turkey.

Zoonoses are frequently associated with wild animals. Research on reptiles either living in their natural habitat or kept as pet animals has shown that these animals frequently serve as the asymptomatic hosts of bacterial zoonotic agents, including Salmonella spp. and Escherichia coli. Studies have shown the potential of reptiles to transmit these pathogens to humans and other animals. Epidemiological research on the herpetofauna of various regions has demonstrated the high potential of reptiles as a reservoir of Salmonella spp. In the present study, Salmonella spp. were not isolated or identi

Screening for Viral Pathogens in African Simian Bushmeat Seized at A French Airport.

Illegal bushmeat traffic is an important threat to biodiversity conservation of several endangered species and may contribute to the emergence and spread of infectious diseases in humans. The hunting, manipulation and consumption of wildlife-based products, especially those of primate origin, may be a threat to human health; however, few studies have investigated the role of bushmeat trade and consumption as a potential source of human infections to date. In this study, we report the screening of viral pathogens in African simian game seized by French customs at Toulouse Blagnac Airport. Epifl
