Bacteroides pyogenes is a Gram-negative obligate anaerobe rod. It is naturally found in the oral microbiome of cats and dogs, which represents a primary source of disease for humans. The present review provides an update on the role of B. pyogenes as a pathogen responsible for infections in humans. Indeed, an increasing number of B. pyogenes infections have been reported in recent years, including skin and soft tissue infections as well as severe diseases like osteomyelitis, Lemierre's syndrome, and bloodstream infection. Pre-analytical and analytical phases are crucial to guarantee the isolat

The intestinal microbiota is involved in many diseases, such as constipation, obesity, and inflammatory bowel disease. To determine the associations between the gut microbiome and the frequency of bowel movements, we performed cross-sectional correlation analysis at the baseline and longitudinal correlation analysis after the intervention. Forty-three women were enrolled in this study. All participants ingested soymilk-okara powder (15 g) daily for 12 weeks. They recorded the ingested okara powder amounts and their frequency of bowel movements during the entire 12 weeks of the intervention. Th

Malaria is caused by Plasmodium species and remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality globally. Gut bacteria can influence the severity of malaria, but the contribution of specific bacteria to the risk of severe malaria is unknown. Here, multiomics approaches demonstrate that specific species of Bacteroides are causally linked to the risk of severe malaria. Plasmodium yoelii hyperparasitemia-resistant mice gavaged with murine-isolated Bacteroides fragilis develop P. yoelii hyperparasitemia. Moreover, Bacteroides are significantly more abundant in Ugandan children with severe malar

Bacteroides fragilis is the strict anaerobic bacteria most commonly found in human infections, and has a high mortality rate. Among other virulence factors, the remarkable ability to acquire resistance to a variety of antimicrobial agents and to tolerate nanomolar concentrations of oxygen explains in part their success in causing infection and colonizing the mucosa. Much attention has been given to genes related to multiple drug resistance derived from plasmids, integrons or transposon, but such genes are also detected in chromosomal systems, like the mar (multiple antibiotic resistance) locus

Osteomyelitis and septic arthritis are serious complications of sickle cell disease which occur at rates of 18% and 7%, respectively. In two small studies of osteomyelitis in sickle cell patients, the most common causative organisms were Salmonella spp. and Staphylococcus spp. Anaerobic infection is uncommon. Here, we report an 18-year-old girl with sickle cell disease and suspected spontaneous vertebral osteomyelitis due to Bacteroides fragilis. The diagnosis was based on multiple positive blood cultures. Despite extensive investigation, the port of entry could not be determined. The patient

This study investigated the mechanisms of multidrug resistance (MDR) in an isolate of Bacteroides fragilis (WI1) from a patient with anaerobic sepsis. The MDR of WI1 affected susceptibility to beta-lactams, clindamycin, fluoroquinolones, metronidazole and tetracycline. In addition to its 5.31-Mb chromosome, WI1 possessed two low-copy-number plasmids, pHagl (5.6 kb) and pHag2 (9.9 kb), that were absent from B. fragilis NCTC 9343. Restriction digestion with EcoRV, HindIII and SstI, combined with DNA sequencing, revealed that pHAG2 contained a tet(Q) gene at base position 3689 that resided on the

Bacteroides fragilis (B.f.) is an aetiological agent of gynecological and obstetrical infections. The aim of this study was to determine occurrence of B.f. in women genital tract. A total number of 118 women in labor between 38 and 43 gestation age and not demonstrating clinical symptoms of infection was examined. B.f. strains were isolated from 9 women (15.9%). More often B.f. strains were isolated from women delivering post-term and staying previously in Pregnancy Pathology Ward. It was observed that infant mean weight on the 3rd day of life was higher in the vagina. The following features o

Experimental animal model systems have been used by many investigators to explore the pathogenicity of obligate anaerobes. During the last 15 years, research in our laboratory has utilized an experimental model for intraabdominal sepsis to define the contribution of obligate anaerobes to the infectious process. These studies have shown that obligate anaerobes are important components of the polymicrobic flora present during such infection. Moreover, certain anaerobes, such as Bacteroides fragilis, possess specific virulence factors, such as the capsular polysaccharide, that appear to be import

The potential in vitro synergistic effect of ciprofloxacin associated with mezlocillin, cefoxitin and clindamycin was evaluated against 30 strains of Bacteroides fragilis. All bacteria were clinical isolates, identified by gas chromatography and fermentation of carbohydrates. MICs of the drugs were determined by a miniaturized dilution broth method. Resistance or susceptibility to the drugs was not a criterion for the selection of the strains. Antibacterial combinations were tested by a checkerboard method utilizing brain hearth infusion broth and a bacterial inoculum of 10(6) CFU/ml. Microtit

We examined the effects of pH and incubation in a CO(2)-containing atmosphere on the activity of erythromycin against 81 strains of the Bacteroides fragilis group. A striking reduction in erythromycin activity was noted when the pH decreased below 7.0 and when the organisms were incubated with CO(2).

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is linked to gut microbiota dysbiosis, and modulating microbiota through diet is a promising IBD management strategy. Larch arabinogalactan (AG) is a natural polysaccharide with potential prebiotic effects; however, its regulatory effects on gut microbiota and the underlying anti-inflammatory mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we demonstrated that AG improves gut homeostasis in dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis mice, with effects depend on the gut microbiota. Further analysis revealed that AG notably enriched the Bacteroides, particularly Bacteroides thetaio

Bacteroides fragilis is an important member of the human gut microbiota, where it contributes to immune modulation, intestinal barrier integrity, and colonization resistance. Despite its beneficial roles as a symbiont in the gut, B. fragilis is also the most commonly isolated anaerobe in clinical infections, implicated in intra-abdominal abscesses, bloodstream infections, and soft tissue infections. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is increasingly recognized as a major factor in its transition from symbiont to opportunist; however, the relationship between resistance and anatomical site of isola

Introduction. Bacteroides fragilis is a Gram-negative anaerobe that is a member of the human gastrointestinal microbiota and is frequently found as an extra-intestinal opportunistic pathogen. B. fragilis comprises two distinct groups - divisions I and II - characterized by the presence/absence of genes [cepA and ccrA (cfiA), respectively] that confer resistance to β-lactam antibiotics by either serine or metallo-β-lactamase production. No large-scale analyses of publicly available B. fragilis sequence data have been undertaken, and the resistome of the species remains poorly defined.Hypothesis

The anaerobe Bacteroides fragilis is a highly aerotolerant, opportunistic pathogen that is an important component of the human intestinal microbiota. Aerotolerance has been linked to a robust oxidative stress response, which in turn is necessary for maximal virulence in a mouse intra-abdominal abscess model. During oxidative stress, there is a dynamic change in gene expression that encompasses a third of the genome, but there is a paucity of information on factors that control this response. A large number of transcription regulators, including about 14 extracytoplasmic function (ECF) sigma fa

OBJECTIVES: To identify genetic determinants that determine beta-lactamase expression in Bacteroides strains isolated from human infections.
METHODS: Beta-lactam susceptibility and beta-lactamase enzyme expression were characterized in selected strains. Beta-lactamase genes and surrounding regions were analysed by PCR, inverse PCR and Southern hybridization.
RESULTS: High resistance to penicillins and cephalosporins was found among most isolated strains, in which all known beta-lactamase genes from Bacteroides are represented, but differences were found in their expression of enzyme activity

Bacteroides is a predominant anaerobic bacteria of the human colon. Since the ten species of the Bacteroides fragilis group are responsible for most anaerobic endogenous infections, the antimicrobial resistance of these bacteria is of great concern due to the role they can play in the dissemination of resistance. Eighty non-diarrheic human feces samples were analyzed. Each sample was inoculated in BBE (Bacteroides Bile Esculin) and KVLB (Kanamycin, Vancomycin, Laked Blood) agar plates and were incubated in anaerobic conditions for 48 h at 35 degrees C. For identification and antimicrobial sens

The level of serum IgM, IgG and IgA antibodies including IgG1, IgG2, IgG3, IgG4, IgA1 and IgA2 subclass-specific antibodies to Bacteroides (Porphyromonas) gingivalis fimbriae and to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) were analysed in patients with different forms of periodontal disease (PD) and control subjects by ELISA. Among PD subjects, sera obtained from adult periodontitis (AP), rapidly progressive periodontitis (RPP) and gingivitis contained high titres of fimbriae-specific IgG antibodies (7500-15,000 ELISA units) followed by IgA (90-700 units) and IgM (30-90 units). In contrast, sera from localiz
