BACKGROUND: Motivated by the first mathematical model for schistosomiasis proposed by Macdonald and Barbour's classical schistosomiasis model tracking the dynamics of infected human population and infected snail hosts in a community, in our previous study, we incorporated seasonal fluctuations into Barbour's model, but ignored the effect of bovine reservoir host in the transmission of schistosomiasis. Inspired by the findings from our previous work, the model was further improved by integrating two definitive hosts (human and bovine) and seasonal fluctuations, so as to understand the transmiss

We deal with the following question: Can the consumption of contaminated bush meat, the funeral practices and the environmental contamination explain the recurrence and persistence of Ebola virus disease outbreaks in Africa? We develop an SIR-type model which, incorporates both the direct and indirect transmissions in such a manner that there is a provision of Ebola viruses. We prove that the full model has one (endemic) equilibrium which is locally asymptotically stable whereas, it is globally asymptotically stable in the absence of the Ebola virus shedding in the environment. For the sub-mod

BACKGROUND: A substantial scale-up in public health response is needed to control the unprecedented Ebola virus disease (EVD) epidemic in west Africa. Current international commitments seek to expand intervention capacity in three areas: new EVD treatment centres, case ascertainment through contact tracing, and household protective kit allocation. We aimed to assess how these interventions could be applied individually and in combination to avert future EVD cases and deaths.
METHODS: We developed a transmission model of Ebola virus that we fitted to reported EVD cases and deaths in Montserrad

Brucellosis is one of the major infectious and contagious bacterial diseases in Hinggan League of Inner Mongolia, China. The number of newly infected human brucellosis data in this area has increased dramatically in the last 10 years. In this study, in order to explore effective control and prevention measures we propose a deterministic model to investigate the transmission dynamics of brucellosis in Hinggan League. The model describes the spread of brucellosis among sheep and from sheep to humans. The model simulations agree with newly infected human brucellosis data from 2001 to 2011, and th

Human rabies, an infection of the nervous system, is a major public-health problem in China. In the last 60 years (1950-2010) there had been 124,255 reported human rabies cases, an average of 2,037 cases per year. However, the factors and mechanisms behind the persistence and prevalence of human rabies have not become well understood. The monthly data of human rabies cases reported by the Chinese Ministry of Health exhibits a periodic pattern on an annual base. The cases in the summer and autumn are significantly higher than in the spring and winter. Based on this observation, we propose a sus

Human rabies is one of the major public-health problems in China. The number of human rabies cases has increased dramatically in the last 15 years, partially due to the poor understanding of the transmission dynamics of rabies and the lack of effective control measures of the disease. In this article, in order to explore effective control and prevention measures we propose a deterministic model to study the transmission dynamics of rabies in China. The model consists of susceptible, exposed, infectious, and recovered subpopulations of both dogs and humans and describes the spread of rabies amo

Influenza pandemics present a global threat owing to their potential mortality and substantial economic impacts. Stockpiling antiviral drugs to manage a pandemic is an effective strategy to offset their negative impacts; however, little is known about the long-term optimal size of the stockpile under uncertainty and the characteristics of different countries. Using an epidemic-economic model we studied the effect on total mortality and costs of antiviral stockpile sizes for Brazil, China, Guatemala, India, Indonesia, New Zealand, Singapore, the UK, the USA and Zimbabwe. In the model, antiviral

This paper is concerned with a strongly-coupled elliptic system, which describes a West Nile virus (WNv) model with cross-diffusion in a heterogeneous environment. The basic reproduction number is introduced through the next generation infection operator and some related eigenvalue problems. The existence of coexistence states is presented by using a method of upper and lower solutions. The true positive solutions are obtained by monotone iterative schemes. Our results show that a cross-diffusive WNv model possesses at least one coexistence solution if the basic reproduction number is greater

The threshold interpretation of R0 can fail to describe elimination in epidemic models with imperfect vaccination and reinfection. We study an SEIRV model in which vaccinated individuals remain partially susceptible and recovered individuals may be reinfected. The main novelty is an explicit threshold account of how reinfection can sustain endemic equilibria even when the vaccinated-population reproduction number satisfies R0<1. We derive the disease-free equilibrium, R0, and a sufficient condition for convergence to the disease-free state, showing why local disease-free stability and global e

Due to its ability to summarise 'real-time' epidemic behaviour, the time-dependent reproduction number, Rt, is a useful metric for tracking pathogen transmission and quantifying the effects of interventions during infectious disease outbreaks. The predominant models underlying inferred Rt trajectories are renewal equations, their success owing in part to the relatively few assumptions they require. One necessary assumption is the generation time distribution, which summarises the time periods between infections in infector-infectee transmission pairs. This distribution is typically assumed to

BACKGROUND: Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral disease endemic to tropical regions, primarily transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. Climate-driven temperature changes are altering vector ecology and expanding the geographic range where both species coexist. However, the combined effects of temperature variability and interspecific interactions, particularly the highly competitive larval stage, on mosquito population dynamics and dengue transmission remain poorly understood.
METHODS: We developed a deterministic model incorporating temperature-dependent parameters to analyze vector

Understanding the spatial and temporal dynamics of infectious disease transmission is critical for effective epidemic preparedness and response. COVID-19 transmission is influenced by mobility patterns, regional connectivity, and evolving public health interventions, making it challenging to quantify region-specific transmission risks. Our study integrates intervention-driven analysis, real-world data, and high-resolution modeling to establish a robust computational framework for assessing interregional transmission dynamics. We employ a multi-patch model to estimate the time-dependent regiona

Clonorchiasis is a foodborne disease caused by parasites and transmitted to humans through intermediate hosts. Clonorchis sinensis parasitizes in the bile ducts of human liver and causes organ lesions. The cercariae and metacercaria of Clonorchis sinensis have seasonal variations and may be affected by high water temperature in summer. We formulate a partial differential equations (PDE) model which incorporates seasonality, spatial heterogeneity and the extrinsic incubation period (EIP) of the parasite. We present the basic reproduction number R 0 and discuss the global dynamics of the model.

This study explores Mpox transmission dynamics using a mathematical and data-driven epidemiological model that incorporates two viral strains, Clade I and Clade II. The model includes transmission pathways between humans and mammals and divides the human population into susceptible, exposed, infectious, hospitalized, and recovered groups. Weekly data from the WHO for Spain, Italy, Nigeria, and the DRC from 2022 to 2024 are used for model validation via non-linear least-squares fitting, with model performance assessed by Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE). We conduct time-series analysis to detect

Different cross-sectional and clinical research studies investigated that chronic HBV infected individuals' co-epidemic with COVID-19 infection will have more complicated liver infection than HBV infected individuals in the absence of COVID-19 infection. The main objective of this study is to investigate the optimal impacts of four time dependent control strategies on the HBV and COVID-19 co-epidemic transmission using compartmental modeling approach. The qualitative analyses of the model investigated the model solutions non-negativity and boundedness, calculated all the models effective repro

Alveolar echinococcosis, transmitted between definitive hosts and intermediate hosts via predation, threatens the health of humans and causes great economic losses in western China. In order to explore the transmission mechanism of this disease, an eco-epidemiological lifecycle model is formulated to illustrate interactions between two hosts. The basic and demographic reproduction numbers are developed to characterize the stability of the disease-free and endemic equilibria as well as bifurcation dynamics. The existence of forward bifurcation and Hopf bifurcation are confirmed and are used to

The E/S (exposed/susceptible) ratio is analyzed in the SEIR model. The ratio plays a key role in understanding epidemic dynamics during the 2014-2016 Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone and Guinea. The maximum value of the ratio occurs immediately before or after the time-dependent reproduction number (Rt) equals 1, depending on the initial susceptible population (S(0)). It is demonstrated that transmission rate curves corresponding to various incubation periods intersect at a single point referred to as the Cross Point (CP). At this point, the E/S ratio reaches an extremum, signifying a critical s

European governments use non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) to control resurging waves of COVID-19. However, they only have outdated estimates for how effective individual NPIs were in the first wave. We estimate the effectiveness of 17 NPIs in Europe's second wave from subnational case and death data by introducing a flexible hierarchical Bayesian transmission model and collecting the largest dataset of NPI implementation dates across Europe. Business closures, educational institution closures, and gathering bans reduced transmission, but reduced it less than they did in the first wave.

The basic reproductive number (R0) is a fundamental measure used to quantify the transmission potential of an epidemic in public health practice. However, R0 cannot reflect the time-varying nature of an epidemic. A time-varying effective reproductive number Rt can provide more information because it tracks the subsequent evolution of transmission. However, since it neglects individual-level geographical variations in exposure risk, Rt may smooth out interpersonal heterogeneous transmission potential, obscure high-risk spreaders, and hence hamper the effectiveness of control measures in spatial

The re-emergence of syphilis has become a global public health issue, and more persons are getting infected, especially in developing countries. This has also led to an increase in the incidence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections as some studies have shown in the recent decade. This paper investigates the synergistic interaction between HIV and syphilis using a mathematical model that assesses the impact of syphilis treatment on the dynamics of syphilis and HIV co-infection in a human population where HIV treatment is not readily available or accessible to HIV-infected individual
