Someone is to blame: the impact of suicide on the mind of the bereaved (including clinicians).

This paper presents an emerging understanding of the psychodynamics of suicide loss, derived from over 1500 accounts of suicide bereavement shared by families, friends and clinicians. It identifies clear patterns in the responses of the bereaved, particularly the formation of delusional narratives that often place them at the centre of blame for the death. These narratives have a profound impact on well-being, increase the risk of mental illness and elevate the likelihood of death by suicide. They not only cause harm to the bereaved but also permeate and distort our systemic and societal respo

Psychosocial outcomes in cancer-bereaved children and adolescents: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Due to the unique importance of parental and sibling relationships and concurrently existing developmental challenges, the loss of a parent or sibling due to cancer is a highly stressful event for children and adolescents. This is the first systematic review that integrates findings on psychosocial outcomes after parental or sibling cancer bereavement. METHODS: A systematic search of Web of Science, PubMed, PsycINFO, and PubPsych was conducted, last in December 2017. Quantitative studies on psychosocial outcomes of children and adolescents who lost a parent or sibling due to cancer

Suicidal ideation and distress in family members bereaved by suicide in Portugal.

The present study assessed the impact of suicide and distress on suicidal ideation in a sample of 93 Portuguese family members bereaved by suicide. A control community sample of 102 adults also participated. After controlling for educational level, those bereaved by the suicide of a family member were found to have higher levels of suicidal ideation. Forty-two percent of family members had Suicide Ideation Questionnaire scores at or above the cutoff point. General distress, depression, anxiety, and hostility related to suicidal ideation, whereas time since suicide also interacted with general

Protective Pychosocial Factors in Depression Among Spousally Bereaved Elders.

Three psychosocial factors were examined for their ability to reduce depressive symptomatology among a sample of 79 spousally bereaved elders. Baseline assessments of social supports, stability of social rhythms, and mastery events were used in linear and logistic regression analyses to examine their association with: 1) baseline depressive symptomatology, and 2) the likelihood of being or becoming syndromally depressed, or 3) dysthymic from approximately 2 until 13 months after the loss of a spouse. Results indicated that mastery events, global social support, and "appraised" or "belonging" s

Quality of social relationships and the development of depression in parentally-bereaved youth.

Fear of abandonment has been found to be associated with mental health problems for youth who have experienced a parent's death. This article examines how youth's fears of abandonment following the death of a parent lead to later depressive symptoms by influencing relationships with caregivers, peers, and romantic partners. Participants were 109 youth ages 7-16 (50% male), assessed 4 times over a 6-year period. The ethnic composition of the sample was non-Hispanic Caucasian (67%), Hispanic (16%), African American (7%), Native American (3%), Asian (1%), and Other (6%). Youth's fears of abandonm

The efficacy of a brief internet-based self-help intervention for the bereaved.

Research so far has shown little evidence that written disclosure facilitates recovery from bereavement. There are good reasons to assume that written disclosure may only benefit those bereaved who are at risk for developing problems or who are experiencing significant psychological problems as a result of their loss, and only when appropriate writing instructions are used. Drawing on previous work in the area of post-traumatic stress, a writing intervention was designed to test these assumptions. Bereaved individuals, who were still significantly distressed by their loss, were randomly assign

Bereavement in twin relationships: an exploration of themes from a study of twinship.

The primary foci of twin research have been on twins as a biological phenomenon, on the management of medical complications of twin pregnancy and birth and on the study of individual differences and development by psychologists and geneticists for whom twins provide a powerful research tool. The twin relationship - twinship - has received less research attention, including the aspect of bereavement which may occur at any stage of life. This paper presents some findings from a qualitative study that used grounded theory methodology to explore the nature of twinship especially issues relevant to

Circumstances of death in sudden death in epilepsy: interviews of bereaved relatives.

OBJECTIVES: To study the circumstances of death in sudden death in epilepsy. METHODS: Self referred bereaved relatives of patients with epilepsy who had died suddenly were interviewed with information obtained substantiated through other sources-namely, coroners' officers' reports, postmortem reports, previous medical records, and EEG reports. RESULTS: Of 34 cases, 26 were classified as sudden unexpected deaths in epilepsy (SUDEP). Twenty four of 26 cases of SUDEP were unwitnessed. Evidence indicative or suggestive of a seizure was found in most. In 11 of 26 the position of the head was such

The CRH stimulation test in bereaved subjects with and without accompanying depression.

We studied recently bereaved individuals with the corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) stimulation test. Subjects with a bereavement complicated by a depressive illness (n = 9) had significantly higher basal plasma cortisol levels and smaller plasma adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) responses to CRH than either subjects with an uncomplicated bereavement (n = 19) or normal controls (n = 34). Subjects with depressed bereavement showed ACTH responses to CRH similar to those of depressed patients (n = 30). Bereaved subjects who had received psychotropic medications in the past (n = 13), compared

Invisible in uniform: Bereavement under betrayal and Existential randomness among female IDF spotters.

This qualitative study examines how the sense of institutional betrayal and the randomness of survival shape the experience of traumatic bereavement among 20 female IDF spotters who survived the events of October 7. Data were analyzed using Reflexive Thematic Analysis (RTA). The findings reveal the phenomenon of "bereavement under betrayal"-a condition in which the processing of loss is complicated and blocked by a profound rupture in the institutional contract. This foundation was formed by prior "epistemic injustice" (the systematic dismissal of their professional warnings before the disaste

Resilience to stress across the lifespan: Childhood maltreatment, heart rate variability, and bereavement.

Following a stressful life event, there is considerable variation in how individuals respond and adapt. Multiple models of risk and resilience show that adverse childhood experiences may be associated with an individual's response to stress later in life. While there is considerable support that early adversity can sensitize the stress response system and lead to adverse outcomes later in life, there is mounting evidence that in adolescence and young adulthood, certain biological predispositions to stress may be associated with resilience in the context of subsequent stressors. In this study,

A scoping review of therapies used to treat psychological trauma post perinatal bereavement.

BACKGROUND: Up to 39% of women who experience perinatal bereavement proceed to develop Post-Traumatic-Stress-Disorder (PTSD), with this large proportion meriting treatment. Before setting-up a treatment service for postnatal women who are experiencing psychological trauma, it is important to identify what therapies have been used in-the-past to address this problem. AIM: To scope for research that has implemented therapies to treat psychological trauma post perinatal bereavement, for potential inclusion in a flexible treatment package. METHOD: A scoping review mapped coverage, range, and typ

Prenatal exposure to maternal bereavement and offspring psoriasis: a Danish nationwide cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal stress may alter immune competence of the fetus. Limited data exist on the role of antenatal stress in psoriasis development. OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether prenatal exposure to maternal bereavement increases the risk of offspring psoriasis. METHODS: This register-based cohort study included 1 811 917 live singletons born from 1978 to 2008 in Denmark. The children were assigned to the bereaved group if their mothers lost a child, partner/spouse, parent or sibling during pregnancy or up to 12 months before pregnancy. Follow-up started at the date of birth and ended at

SYMPTOM AND FUNCTIONAL TRAITS OF BRIEF MAJOR DEPRESSIVE EPISODES AND DISCRIMINATION OF BEREAVEMENT.

BACKGROUND: Despite the removal of the bereavement exclusion from DSM-5, clinicians may feel uncertain on how to proceed when caring for a patient who presents with depressive symptoms following the death of someone close. The ability to better distinguish, on a symptom and functional level, between patients who experience depression in the context of bereavement and those with nonbereavement-related depression, could help guide clinical decision making. METHOD: Individual and clustered depressive symptom and impairment measures were used for modeling bereavement status within a nationally re

Does bereavement-related first episode depression differ from other kinds of first depressions?

BACKGROUND: It has never been investigated whether first depression differs in patients who have experienced bereavement compared to patients who have not. METHOD: Patients discharged with a diagnosis of a single depressive episode from a psychiatric in- or outpatient hospital setting were consecutively sampled from the Danish Psychiatric Central Research Register. Patients participated in an extensive interview including the Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (SCAN) and the Interview of Recent Life Events (IRLE). RESULTS: Among 301 patients with a first depression, 26 pati

Major depression or uncomplicated bereavement? A follow-up of youth exposed to suicide.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the depressive reactions experienced by youth exposed to suicide were uncomplicated bereavement or major depression by examining the longitudinal risk of recurrent major depression. METHOD: The 121 friends and acquaintances of 26 adolescent suicide victims were followed up 1 to 18 months after an initial interview that took place around 6 months after the death of the suicide victim. A demographically similar group of 138 unexposed controls was also followed up. RESULTS: The median duration of depression in the 37 subjects who became depressed after exposure w

Support after perinatal death: a study of support and counselling after perinatal bereavement.

After an earlier study into the practical aspects of the management of perinatal death, a counselling service was introduced for parents whose baby had died in the perinatal period. The service was monitored, and the parents who received the service were compared with a group that did not. Fifty families were allocated randomly either to the counselling (supported) group or to the contrast group, who received routine hospital care. Assessment was carried out at six and 14 months after the death, using a semi-structured interview and two self-rating scales (the general health questionnaire and
