Military sexual trauma (MST) significantly impacts the health and well-being of women veterans in the US military, where women constitute 16.3% of active-duty service members. Despite policy advancements, MST remains prevalent, with profound implications for mental and physical health. MST encompasses sexual assault and harassment, affecting 38% of women and 4% of men in the military. It is linked to higher rates of posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, substance use disorders, and physical health issues such as cardiovascular disease and chronic pain. In addition, MST survivors face soci

Social understanding relies upon children's experience of the world and their communicative interaction with others. Opportunities to engage in cooperative social interaction, such as friendships, can foster the development of social understanding. Children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and dyslexia often have friendships of poorer quality. The present study examined relationships and differences in social understanding and friendship quality in children with ADHD or dyslexia, in comparison to neurotypically developing children (NTD). Participants were 192 primary-school

BACKGROUND: Sickle Cell Anemia (SCA) has been associated with an increased likelihood of neuropsychiatric complications, including depression, and reduced quality of life due to the chronicity of the disease and the occurrence of painful crisis. This study aims to explore the lived experiences of clinical depression among adolescents with SCA in Dar-es-salaam, Tanzania.
METHODOLOGY: A qualitative phenomenological study was conducted on adolescents aged 11-19 years clinically diagnosed to have depression who attended sickle cell clinics from October 2023 to March 2024. Experiences of adolescen

OBJECTIVES: The transition from military to civilian life may present increased exposure to various stressful life events (SLEs) that can increase the risk of homelessness (eg, loss of employment, dissolution of romantic relationships). We assessed the extent to which exposure to SLEs occurring proximal to US Army soldier transitions out of active duty was associated with risk of homelessness.
METHODS: A total of 16 589 respondents who were no longer on active duty but participated while on active duty during 2011-2014 baseline surveys completed follow-up surveys during 2016-2018 and 2018-201

INTRODUCTION: After the death of a child during pregnancy, birth or in the neonatal period, parents often experience feelings of guilt, disenfranchisement, feelings of betrayal by one's own body and envy of others. Such bereavement results in high rates of distress: psychologically, emotionally, physiologically and existentially. These data are collected using a national, longitudinal cohort to assess grief in mothers and their partners after the death of a child during pregnancy, birth or in the neonatal period. Our aim is to achieve a general description of grief, emotional health, and exist

PrEP-related medical mistrust is not simply a lack of trust; it is a relational, historically rooted and continuously reinforced response to perceived institutional betrayal, everyday discrimination, and inequitable prevention systems. Building on recent AIDS and Behavior articles by Simon et al. and Jaiswal et al. describing PrEP-related mistrust, distrust, and misinformation among Black sexual minority men and socioeconomically diverse young sexual minority men from multiple racial and ethnic groups in the United States, we argue that the field must move from documenting mistrust to engineer

Disclosure of child sexual abuse (CSA) is a pivotal yet complex process that can lead to protection and healing if well supported, or further harm if met with disbelief or institutional betrayal. Disclosing CSA experienced in religious organisations faces additional challenges due to spiritual and institutional power, the moral authority of clergy, theological taboos surrounding sexuality, and organisational cultures that have historically prioritised reputation over accountability. Drawing on global literature, findings from the Australian Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Chil

OBJECTIVES: The feared self-concept, the self that a person fears they may be or could become, has been increasingly shown to drive the development and maintenance of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). It is proposed that the feared self develops from a vulnerable self-concept, which itself is a result of normative self-concept development being disrupted by negative early life experiences. However, it is currently unclear which experiences lead to the development of vulnerable self-concept in people with OCD. This study aimed to describe the events and life experiences that people with OCD

This article examines the emotional and psychological experiences of military personnel involved in Nigeria's Operation Safe Corridor (OPSC), a deradicalization, rehabilitation, and reintegration (DRR) program for former Boko Haram combatants. While existing research on Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration (DDR) has focused primarily on ex-combatants and community outcomes, limited attention has been given to the psychological impact on security actors responsible for implementation. Drawing on Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of semi-structured interviews with eight Nigerian

OBJECTIVES: There has been limited exploration into the nature and development of psychotic experiences (PEs) in Parkinson's disease (PD). We aimed to comprehensively assess the frequency, severity, and associated distress of paranoia and unusual sensory experiences (USEs) in PD, and to assess what variables are significantly associated with these experiences, focussing on psychological processes central to understanding PEs in non-PD groups.
METHOD: A questionnaire battery was completed by 369 individuals with PD with a mean age of 66 years and mean time since diagnosis of 5 years. Recruitme

Background: During peacekeeping missions, military personnel may be involved in or exposed to potentially morally injurious experiences (PMIEs), such as an inability to intervene due to a limited mandate. While exposure to such morally transgressive events has been shown to lead to moral injury in combat veterans, research on moral injury in peacekeepers is limited. Objective: We aimed to determine patterns of exposure to PMIEs and associated outcome- and exposure-related factors among Dutch peacekeepers stationed in the former Yugoslavia during the Srebrenica genocide.Method: Self-report data

Moral injury, an experience of betrayal or transgression of moral values, continues to receive attention because of its associations with psychiatric disorders, including posttraumatic stress disorder and suicidality. There is growing recognition that moral injury may require novel interventions that involve religious or spiritual paradigms. This pilot study presents feasibility data and exploratory outcomes for 40 veteran participants across seven cohorts who participated in a novel 12-week moral injury group (MIG) over 35 months. The MIG was cofacilitated by a Veterans Affairs chaplain and p

Child sexual abuse (CSA) tends to occur in close relationships and involves sexual acts and betrayal. Thus, it is thought to affect sexual well-being in adulthood more so than any other form of childhood trauma. Research conducted over the last decade resulted in an impressive diversity of evidence reporting that CSA may be related to greater sexual dysfunction and lower sexual satisfaction as an adult, but also to higher levels of sexual compulsivity and sexual risk behaviors. Some studies also found no significant association between CSA and adult sexual well-being. Faced with these mixed re

The neuroscience of interpersonal trust has expanded across functional magnetic resonance imaging, electroencephalography, functional near-infrared spectroscopy, pharmacology, genetics, physiology, and brain stimulation. Although this literature implicates distributed reward-, salience-, mentalizing-, and executive-control systems, findings are often difficult to compare because nominally similar Trust Game paradigms differ in their task architecture and analytic definition of trust. Here, we provided a PRISMA-guided systematic structural synthesis of 198 empirical studies comprising 200 exper

PURPOSE: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and dissociation are common responses to trauma, especially interpersonal and betrayal trauma. Dissociation has been proposed to be a core concept in understanding PTSD. However, little is known about the bidirectional relationship between dissociation and ICD-11 complex PTSD (CPTSD) symptoms. This study examined the relationship between classical PTSD, disturbances in self-organization (DSO), and dissociative symptoms across two culturally different samples.
METHODS: Participants from Western and South Asian countries completed validated measure

The study explored how frontline therapists living and working under ongoing security threats constructed Continuous Traumatic Stress (CTS) and how this experience differed from classical trauma responses. Using a qualitative design, the research drew on 12 semi-structured interviews and a focus group with eight additional mental health professionals in southern Israel, including psychologists, social workers, psychotherapists, and educational counselors exposed directly or indirectly to the October 7, 2023, attacks and their aftermath. Data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis and

Exposure to potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs) during military deployment is common and may lead to long-lasting negative psychological consequences, referred to as moral injury. Few studies investigated long-term outcomes following exposure to PMIEs. This study investigated patterns of exposure to PMIEs during deployment and associations with long-term psychological outcomes in a cohort (N = 471) of Dutch Afghanistan veterans 10 years post-deployment. Latent class analysis was used to identify classes characterized by patterns of exposure to PMIEs. We investigated differences betwee

BACKGROUND: Emerging cross-sectional data indicate that healthcare workers (HCWs) in the COVID-19 era face particular mental health risks. Moral injury - a betrayal of one's values and beliefs, is a potential concern for HCWs who witness the devastating impact of acute COVID-19 illness while too often feeling helpless to respond. This study longitudinally examined rates of depression, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and moral injury among United States HCWs in the COVID-19 era. We anticipated finding high levels of clinical symptoms and moral injury th

OBJECTIVE: Contextually embedded and sanctioned gender minimization and sexual abuse toward female personnel within the military appears widespread. Left unabated, mental health complications of female personnel will challenge care responsibilities for military organizations.
METHOD: Interview data from six ex-military women that sought positive and negative interpretations of gender minimization and sexual abuse while in the military was analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis.
RESULTS: Analysis revealed two superordinate themes: (a) Immature Culture, and (b) Ejection and Gr
