Direct in vivo monitoring of acute allergic reactions in human conjunctiva.

Immediate allergic reactions are initiated by allergen-induced, specific IgE-mediated mast cell degranulation and involve leukocyte recruitment into the inflamed site. We compared conjunctival signs, symptoms, and in vivo leukocyte rolling and extravasation into sites of inflammation in five patients allergic to birch pollen and in 10 nonallergic controls who received a challenge to birch allergen or histamine. Both the specific allergen in allergic patients and histamine, both in patients and in healthy controls, induced symptoms and signs of an immediate allergic reaction together with leuko

Validation of the Skin Prick Automated Test (SPAT) Cut-Off Value in Birch Pollen and House Dust Mite Allergic Rhinitis Patients.

INTRODUCTION: A novel device, Skin Prick Automated Test (SPAT), previously showed reduced variability and more consistent test results compared to conventional skin prick test (SPT) to identify allergic sensitisation. This study aimed to clinically validate the adjusted SPAT cut-off in patients with confirmed birch or house dust mite (HDM) allergy. METHODS: Seventy-five adults were included: 25 non-allergic subjects (confirmed by lack of allergy history and negative SPT), 25 birch and 25 HDM allergic rhinitis patients (both confirmed by positive SPT and nasal allergen challenge [NAC]). All su

Component-resolved diagnostics study on nut sensitization and cross-reactivity in China.

PURPOSE: Nut sensitization in China remains insufficiently characterized. Component-resolved diagnosis (CRD) technology offers the ability to distinguish true food allergies from pollen-induced cross-sensitizations while avoiding the risks of oral food challenge (OFC) tests. This study aims to explore and validate the major allergenic components and patterns of cross-reactivity between nuts and pollens in patients with pollen-food allergy syndrome (PFAS). METHODS: This study evaluated the sensitization profiles of 104 patients with self-reported PFAS, focusing on crude extracts and major alle

Birch pollen-induced signatures in dendritic cells are maintained upon additional cytomegalovirus exposure.

During the birch pollen season an enhanced incidence of virus infections is noticed, raising the question whether pollen can affect anti-viral responses independent of allergic reactions. We previously showed that birch pollen-treatment of monocyte-derived dendritic cells (moDC) enhances human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection. Here we addressed how in moDC the relatively weak pollen response can affect the comparably strong response to HCMV. To this end, moDC were stimulated with aqueous birch pollen extract (APE), HCMV, and APE with HCMV, and transcriptomic signatures were determined after 6

Evaluating the efficacy of epinastine ophthalmic solution using a conjunctivitis allergen challenge model in patients with birch pollen allergic conjunctivitis.

BACKGROUND: The efficacy of epinastine 0.05% ophthalmic solution for pollen allergic conjunctivitis has already been shown in a conjunctival allergen challenge (CAC) test using cedar pollen as a challenge. The present study investigated the efficacy of this solution against birch pollen conjunctivitis in a CAC test. METHODS: Ten adult subjects (eight males and two females) with asymptomatic birch pollen conjunctivitis were enrolled in this study. The average age of the subjects was 41.1 years. This study was conducted during a period without birch pollen dispersion. In each subject, the epina

Anaphylactic versus mild reactions to hazelnut and apple in a birch-endemic area: different sensitization profiles?

BACKGROUND: Hazelnut and apple are common causes of food allergy in Europe. In northern Europe, symptoms are usually mild and associated with cross-reactivity to the birch pollen allergen, Bet v 1. In the Mediterranean area, symptoms are more frequently severe and associated with sensitization to lipid transfer protein (LTP). This study compared patients with anaphylactic versus mild reactions to hazelnut and apple in The Netherlands, a birch-endemic area, with respect to sensitization to Bet v 1-homologues (i.e. PR10-proteins) and LTP. METHODS: Twenty-one patients fulfilling the criteria for

Relationship between Bet v 1 and Bet v 2 specific IgE and food allergy in children with grass pollen respiratory allergy.

Grass allergy is the most common pollinosis in Northern Italy. Some patients with grass allergy show polysensitization against other pollens and plant-derived foods. In these patients oral allergic syndrome (OAS) is frequently associated. To evaluate the correlation between food allergy or food sensitization and specific IgE against panallergens such as Bet v 1 and Bet v 2, we studied 56 children (mean age: 8 years 5 months) suffering from respiratory allergy due to grass pollens were enrolled. Specific IgE against the most important food, inhalant allergen and Bet v 1, Bet v 2 were performed

Growth hormone enhances gastric ulcer healing in rats.

The side effects associated with commonly used hypoglycemic drugs have spurred the search for effective plant-based remedies for the prevention and treatment of diabetes. This review aims to summarize and systematize available data on the major classes of plant metabolites with antidiabetic properties, the intracellular mechanisms underlying their action, and plant species showing potential antidiabetic activity. We performed a systematic review of 260 studies identified in PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science, following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Numerous classes of plant secondary meta

Response of Tree Seedlings to a Combined Treatment of Particulate Matter, Ground-Level Ozone, and Carbon Dioxide: Primary Effects.

Trees growing in urban areas face increasing stress from atmospheric pollutants, with limited attention given to the early responses of young seedlings. This study aimed to address the knowledge gap regarding the effects of simulated pollutant exposure, specifically particulate matter (PM), elevated ozone (O3), and carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations, on young seedlings of five tree species: Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.); Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) H.Karst.); silver birch (Betula pendula Roth); small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata Mill.); and Norway maple (Acer platanoides L.). The main ob

Neighborhood allergenic trees and lung function from early adolescence up to early adulthood in Germany.

INTRODUCTION: We investigated whether having more birch trees or more allergenic trees around home in early adolescence was related to worse lung function up to early adulthood in the German cities of Munich and Dresden. METHODS: The analytic sample included 1539 participants from the population-based ISAAC II/SOLAR II study who were aged 9-11 at baseline and 19-24 at follow-up. Forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), and FEV1/FVC were measured by spirometry at both time points. Dosing intact birch pollen grains at the air-liquid interface (ALI) to the immortalized human bronchial epithelial cell line BEAS-2B.

In real life, humans are exposed to whole pollen grains at the air epithelial barrier. We developed a system for in vitro dosing of whole pollen grains at the Air-Liquid Interface (ALI) and studied their effect on the immortalized human bronchial epithelial cell line BEAS-2B. Pollen are sticky and large particles. Dosing pollen needs resuspension of single particles rather than clusters, and subsequent transportation to the cells with little loss to the walls of the instrumentation i.e. in a straight line. To avoid high speed impacting insults to cells we chose sedimentation by gravity as a de

Railroad derived nitrogen and heavy metal pollution does not affect nitrogen fixation associated with mosses and lichens at a tundra site in Northern Sweden.

Traffic derived nitrogen (N) and heavy metal pollution is a well-known phenomenon, but little explored in otherwise pristine ecosystems such as subarctic tundra. Here, the main source of N input to the ecosystem is via N2 fixation by moss- and lichen-associated bacteria. While inhibitory effects of N deposition on moss-associated N2 fixation have been reported, we still lack understanding of the effects of traffic derived N and heavy metal deposition on this ecosystem function in an otherwise pristine setting. To test this, we established a distance gradient (0-1280 m) away from a metal pollut

Birch pollen-related foods can cause late eczematous reactions in patients with atopic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have indicated that in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) and birch pollen allergy pollen-related foods are able to cause late eczematous response. However, the relevance of AD worsening by ingestion of birch pollen-related foods is still a matter of debate. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this retrospective study was to determine how frequently birch pollen-related foods induce a deterioration of eczema. Additionally, the diagnostic value of specific IgE (sIgE) determination was evaluated. METHODS: A total of 182 children and adults with AD and suspected birch polle

[A multicenter comparative observation on the effectiveness and the rapidness of the effect of Cystostop Rapid versus antibiotic therapy in patients with uncomplicated cystitis].

UNLABELLED: The currently available treatment for uncomplicated urinary tract infections includes only antibiotics and chemotherapeutic agents. Experience in the management of acute uncomplicated infections using non-antibiotic products is very limited. The aim of this observation was to study to what extent the response to Cystostop Rapid would be more rapid and more effective compared to antibiotic therapy in patients with acute uncomplicated urinary bladder infections. The secondary objective was to determine the time to improvement of cystitis symptoms following the start of treatment, as

Birch Pollen Related Pear Allergy: A Single-Blind Oral Challenge TRIAL with 2 Pear Cultivars.

Approximately 70% of birch pollen allergic patients in Europe experience hypersensitivity reactions to Immunoglobulin E (IgE) cross-reactive food sources. This so-called pollen-food syndrome (PFS) is defined by allergic symptoms elicited promptly by the ingestion of fruits, nuts, or vegetables in these patients. So far, in the literature, less attention has been given to Bet v 1 cross-reactive symptoms caused by pear (Pyrus communis). In the Netherlands, pears are widely consumed. The primary objective of this study was to measure the type and severity of allergic symptoms during pear challeng

Daily home measurements of exhaled nitric oxide in asthmatic children during natural birch pollen exposure.

BACKGROUND: Fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FENO) is a sensitive marker of eosinophilic airway inflammation in asthma. Available methods have restricted measurements to the clinic, giving only a snapshot of the disease, which by nature is highly variable. OBJECTIVES: We sought to investigate the feasibility, repeatability, accuracy, sensitivity, and biologic plausibility of new handheld equipment for FENO measurements. We studied day-to-day home measurements of FENO during the birch pollen season in children with allergy to birch pollen and a history of mild asthma and rhinoconjunctivitis du

Antibody profiles and self-reported symptoms to pollen-related food allergens in grass pollen-allergic patients from northern Europe.

BACKGROUND: Most studies on pollen-related food allergy have so far focused on the association of birch/weed pollen allergens and plant food allergy. The aim of this study was to elucidate the allergen spectrum among a group of grass pollen-allergic patients from northern Europe and to relate the results to clinical histories of pollen-related food allergy. METHODS: Fifty-eight grass pollen-allergic patients answered a questionnaire regarding allergy to foods. Blood samples were taken to test IgE-reactivity to a large panel of pollen allergens and pollen- and nonpollen-related food allergens
