Osteoid bezoar: a rare case causing small bowel obstruction.

Acute intestinal obstruction due to foreign bodies or bezoar is a rare occurrence in an adult. We report an unusual case of a 27-year-old male patient with no previous history of abdominal surgery or other medical disease, who presented with an acute episode of intestinal obstruction due to ingestion of a bone piece which was managed surgically by enterotomy, and the patient had an uneventful postoperative course. He was advised regular follow-up once in 2 weeks initially and once a month subsequently. He had no problems at the end of 6 months.

Ultrasonographic differentiation of bezoar from feces in small bowel obstruction.

PURPOSE: To evaluate ultrasonographic accuracy in the differentiation of a bezoar from feces in a small bowel obstruction showing feces-like material just proximal to the transitional zone in abdominal computed tomography (CT). METHODS: This study included 14 patients who showed feces-like material just proximal to the transitional zone, among 302 patients diagnosed with small bowel obstruction on abdominal CT. The diagnostic signs of a bezoar on ultrasonography included an arc-like surfaced intraluminal mass, posterior acoustic shadow and twinkling artifacts. The diagnostic performance of ul

Gastric tricho-wool bezoar in an 18-year-old girl.

An 18-year-old girl with no psychiatric history presented with abdominal pain. Four months previously she had given birth to a healthy baby. On palpation, a painful abdominal mass was identified in the epigastric region, and gastrotomy was performed. A J-shaped hair-wool ball and two large pieces of sheep's wool were removed. No history of trichotillomania was reported.

Laparoscopic treatment of bowel obstruction due to a bezoar in a Meckel's diverticulum.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Meckel's diverticulum is a common anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract that may result in gastrointestinal bleeding, diverticulitis, and small bowel obstruction. This report describes the use of laparoscopy to treat a rare complication of Meckel's diverticulum-small bowel obstruction due to phytobezoar impaction. More generally, it provides an example of the feasibility and utility of a laparoscopic approach to small bowel obstructions of unknown causes. METHODS: A 34-year-old male presented to the emergency department complaining of episodic abdominal pain and vom

Synchronous endoscopic management of bilateral kidney and ureter fungal bezoar.

Candidiasis of the lower urinary tract is common in immunocompromised patients. Diabetes and chronic indwelling catheter are two common risk factors for such opportunistic infections. However, upper urinary candidiasis is rare. Further, bilateral synchronous involvement of kidneys and ureter is extremely rare. Treatment usually requires relief of obstruction by percutaneous drainage of the kidney and systemic infusion or local irrigation of antifungal agents. When these measures fail, percutaneous surgical debulking of the fungal bezoar is indicated. We present a case of obstructive anuria due

Small-bowel obstruction secondary to bezoar impaction: a diagnostic dilemma.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal bezoar (GIB) is uncommon and is reported to occur in 4% of all admissions for small-bowel obstruction (SBO). Because of a lack of diagnostic features, it is often associated with a delay in treatment, with increased morbidity. In this article, we report our experience with managing bezoar-induced SBO and the role of early computed tomography (CT) imaging in establishing the diagnosis. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all cases of bezoar-induced SBO treated in our unit between 1999 and 2005. RESULTS: There were 43 patients, of whom 2 had a recurrence, giving a

[The case of gastric and ileal bezoar in a 3 year old boy].

The authors report a case of a 3-year-old boy with a gastric and ileal bezoar, in whom severe anaemia and tumor in the epigastrium were the main symptoms. Bezoars are rare foreign bodies of the gut. They contain swallowed hair, different fibres, seeds, nutshells, sweets or drugs. The group of risk factors for bezoar formation includes anatomical defects, motoric disorders of the digestive tract, type of prescribed drugs and other coexisting chronic diseases. Most cases need surgical treatment.

Crohn's disease of the duodenum presented as pancreatitis due to persimmon bezoar.

Pancreatitis due to Crohn's disease of the duodenum is very rare. It is the result of either reflux of duodenal content into the pancreatic duct or stenosis due to direct involvement of the ampullary region with Crohn's disease. The patient described had isolated Crohn's disease of the duodenum; pancreatitis was the result of persimmon bezoar's constricting the ampullary region.

[Gastric bezoar in diabetes mellitus. 3 cases (author's transl)].

Diabetic gastroparesis is the gastric manifestation of diabetic autonomic neuropathy and may result, on rare occasions, in the formation of a bezoar. This was the case in 3 patients (two women aged 36 and 66 and a 19-year-old man) whose insulin-dependent diabetes was complicated with neuropathy. All patients had marked glycaemic instability apparently related to digestive function. In one patient, a stable normoglycaemic state was obtained by continuous intravenous administration of carbohydrates until the bezoar had disappeared. In the other two patients, who had a long history of neglected d

Small intestinal obstruction caused by the gastric bezoars in elderly diabetic patients: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Bezoar is an unusual cause of small bowel obstruction accounting for 0.4-4 % of all mechanical bowel obstruction. With the rising incidence of diabetes and the associated risk of gastrointestinal issues. CASE PRESENTATION: A 59-year-old female diabetic patient with no prior surgical history presented with severe nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. CT scan revealed dilated small bowel loops, and endoscopy showed gastric retention with an impacted fecalith in the descending duodenum. At exploratory laparotomy, a bezoar was found impacted in jejunum 5-6 in. away from the Treitz l

Gastric bezoars secondary to mixed infection with Sarcina ventriculi and G + bacilli: a case report.

Sarcina ventriculi is a bacterium with a specific histological morphology and infection can present with symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and occasionally fatal complications. Delayed gastric emptying is regarded as the most significant risk factor for infection. Its pathogenicity is currently unknown and treatment options are inconsistent. Here we report a case of gastric bezoars secondary to a mixed infection of Sarcina ventriculi and G + bacilli, which is diagnosed by a pathological biopsy.

Endoscopic treatment of bezoars. A critical review of the literature and presentation of two cases.

The authors report two cases of bezoars. The first was a large gastric bezoar in a patient who had undergone Billroth II gastroresection 40 years earlier. The second was a bezoar located in the distal part of the sigmoid colon accompanied by acute diverticular disease. Both bezoars were removed using endoscopic techniques. The method of exeresis is described together with the characteristics of the different anatomic sites. The authors review the literature focusing on nosology, symptomatology, diagnosis and guidelines for therapy. Considerable attention is paid to the use of endoscopy associa

Novel approach to managing two enormous bezoars with successive snare-tip electrocautery: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Gastric bezoars are indigestible masses that can lead to gastrointestinal obstruction and ulceration. Standard treatments include endoscopic mechanical lithotripsy with a polypectomy snare and Coca-Cola dissolution therapy or a combination of both approaches. However, giant bezoars frequently require multiple treatment sessions and extended hospital stays. Additionally, snare-based mechanical fragmentation may be limited by factors such as bezoar size, shape, density, slipperiness, and restricted working space. In cases where refractory giant bezoars are unresponsive to traditional

Bezoars: Culprits of gastrointestinal obstruction that may lead to surgical intervention and potentially surgical complications.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Bezoars can cause gastrointestinal obstruction and may require surgery. Surgery carries the risk of complications. Medical professionals should perform detailed history in diet and behaviors for patients presenting with abdominal pain to identify risk factors for bezoars, then educate these patients and their families about risks and complications of bezoars. ABSTRACT: Bezoars are solid masses of undigested material that can cause obstruction of the gastrointestinal tract. There are different types of bezoars; phytobezoar, trichobezoar, pharmacobezoar, lactobezoar, and b

Risk factors, endoscopic findings, and treatments in upper gastrointestinal bezoars: multi-center experience in Iran.

AIM: The current study aimed to investigate the risk factors, endoscopic findings, and treatments of upper gastrointestinal bezoars. BACKGROUND: Bezoars are compact masses formed by the accumulation of dietary fiber, undigested food, hair, or medications. The majority of bezoars are asymptomatic, but they may cause serious symptoms or even life-threatening events such as bleeding, obstruction, or perforation. METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted in three gastroenterology clinics between January 2016 and December 2019. Bezoars were detected in 109 of 15,830 endoscopy records (0.68%
