Topical antibiotics for preventing surgical site infection in wounds healing by primary intention.

BACKGROUND: Surgical site infections (SSI) can delay wound healing, impair cosmetic outcome and increase healthcare costs. Topical antibiotics are sometimes used to reduce microbial contaminant exposure following surgical procedures, with the aim of reducing SSIs. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this review was to determine whether the application of topical antibiotics to surgical wounds that are healing by primary intention reduces the incidence of SSI and whether it increases the incidence of adverse outcomes (allergic contact dermatitis, infections with patterns of antibiotic resista

2025 FelineVMA feline oral health and dental care guidelines.

Oral and dental diseases are commonplace in cats, imposing a responsibility on primary care veterinarians to provide high quality oral healthcare for their feline patients. While patient assessment begins with an examination of the conscious cat, further assessment under anesthesia is necessary for the purposes of radiography and treatment, making anesthesia an essential component of feline dentistry. Because feline patients with oral and dental diseases, as well as those convalescing from surgery, generally experience pain, multimodal perioperative analgesia and anesthesia are standard featur

Traumatic injuries to the trachea and bronchi: a narrative review.

OBJECTIVE: In this narrative review, we aim to provide a definition of traumatic tracheo-bronchial injuries as well as an approach to their diagnosis and management, including operative and non-operative strategies. BACKGROUND: Traumatic tracheo-bronchial injuries are relatively uncommon, but are associated with a high mortality, both at the scene and among patients who survive to hospital. Management often requires an emergency airway, usually intubation over a flexible bronchoscope, followed by definitive repair. METHODS: The published literature on the diagnosis and management of traumati

Guidelines for the pharmacologic treatment of neurobehavioral sequelae of traumatic brain injury.

There is currently a lack of evidence-based guidelines to guide the pharmacological treatment of neurobehavioral problems that commonly occur after traumatic brain injury (TBI). It was our objective to review the current literature on the pharmacological treatment of neurobehavioral problems after traumatic brain injury in three key areas: aggression, cognitive disorders, and affective disorders/anxiety/ psychosis. Three panels of leading researchers in the field of brain injury were formed to review the current literature on pharmacological treatment for TBI sequelae in the topic areas of aff

Patient perspectives on the use of oral corticosteroids in asthma.

OBJECTIVE: Oral corticosteroids (OCS) are used to treat uncontrolled asthma, either as short rescue courses of treatment for severe disease exacerbations, or as long-term maintenance therapy in addition to other controller medications. Although the adverse events (AEs) associated with OCS are well understood by healthcare professionals (HCPs), the patient's perspective may be underappreciated. This review discusses the patient perspective on OCS use. DATA SOURCES: A PubMed literature review was performed. STUDY SELECTION: Articles were selected to include those primarily containing data on p

Can artificial intelligence replace manual search for systematic literature? Review on cutaneous manifestations in primary Sjögren's syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Manual systematic literature reviews are becoming increasingly challenging due to the sharp rise in publications. The primary objective of this literature review was to compare manual and computer software using artificial intelligence retrieval of publications on the cutaneous manifestations of primary SS, but we also evaluated the prevalence of cutaneous manifestations in primary SS. METHODS: We compared manual searching and searching with the in-house computer software BIbliography BOT (BIBOT) designed for article retrieval and analysis. Both methods were used for a systematic

Late-onset hypogonadism and lifestyle-related metabolic disorders.

BACKGROUND: Late-onset hypogonadism (LOH) is a condition defined by low levels of testosterone (T), occurring in advanced age. LOH is promoted by senescence, which, in turn, has negative effects on male fertility. Interestingly, the impact of metabolic disorders on the male reproductive system has been the topic of several studies, but the association with LOH is still debatable. OBJECTIVES: Herein, we discuss the hypothesis that the prevalence of metabolic abnormalities potentiates the effects of LOH on the male reproductive system, affecting the reproductive potential of those individuals.

Medical interventions for primary open angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) is a progressive optic neuropathy with an elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), where the optic nerve head becomes pathologically excavated and the visual field (VF) is characteristically altered. Ocular hypertension (OHT) is a condition with elevated IOP but without discernible pathology of the optic nerve head or the VF. It is a major risk factor for development of POAG. OBJECTIVES: To assess and compare the effectiveness of topical pharmacological treatment for POAG or OHT to prevent progression or onset of glaucomatous optic neuropathy. SEARC

Smart Chemical Sensors for Monitoring and Detection of Spoilage in Fermented and Non-Fermented Food Products.

Smart chemical sensors have emerged as promising tools for real-time monitoring of food spoilage in both fermented and non-fermented products. By detecting key spoilage indicators-including biogenic amines, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, methane, pH variations, and microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs)-these systems enable rapid, on-site assessment of food quality, offering a viable alternative to conventional, time-consuming laboratory analyses. Recent advances encompass diverse sensing mechanisms, including chemiresistive platforms based on conducting polymers and MEMS (Microelectromechan

Health literacy and adolescents' substance use behaviors and correlates: a scoping review.

From 2011 to 2023, substance use increased by 23% worldwide. Given that substance use initiation is highest during adolescence, it is crucial to identify amenable correlates of substance use prevention [e.g. health literacy (HL)], which, if embedded in interventions, may improve uptake and outcomes. Hence, this study conducted a scoping review to answer the question: What is known from the existing literature about the relationship between HL and substance use correlates and behaviors in adolescents? Five electronic databases and the bibliography of review articles were searched and a total of
