BACKGROUND: Vitamin B-6 (VB-6) is essential for numerous metabolic pathways, including neurotransmitter synthesis, and its deficiency has been linked to neurologic disorders. Emerging evidence suggests that B vitamin deficiencies can disturb the gut microbiome. Although the gut-brain axis is well recognized, the influence of VB-6 deficiency on behavior via gut-mediated mechanisms remains poorly understood.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the role of VB-6 in modulating the gut-brain axis and its impact on neurobehavioral outcomes.
METHODS: Sixty-four Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a

INTRODUCTION: Several studies have reported alterations in gut microbiota composition of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. However, the observed differences are not consistent across studies. We aimed to investigate associations between gut microbiota composition and AD biomarkers using machine learning models in patients with AD dementia, mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and subjective cognitive decline (SCD).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included 170 patients from the Amsterdam Dementia Cohort, comprising 33 with AD dementia (66 ± 8 years, 46%F, mini-mental state examination (MMSE) 21[19-24]),

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of oregano essential oil on the cecal microorganisms and muscle fatty acids of Luhua chickens. One hundred and twenty 49-day-old healthy dewormed Luhua chickens were randomly divided into four groups with three replicates per group and ten chickens per replicate. The corn−quinoa and soybean meal diets were supplemented with 0 (Q8 group), 50 (QO50 group), 100 (QO100 group) and 150 mg·kg−1 (QO150 group) of oregano essential oil, respectively, and the experiment lasted for 75 days. The composition of intestinal flora was detected by Illumin

BACKGROUND: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common reproductive metabolic disorder impacting women of reproductive age, with its etiology influenced numerous factors. Recent research indicates that the gut microbiota, along with its metabolites and associated immune-inflammatory responses, may contribute to the pathogenesis of PCOS. However, there is finite understanding of the potential intermediate impacts of circulating metabolites, immune cells, and inflammatory proteins on the linkage between intestinal flora and PCOS. This study seeks to explore the interrelationships among the gut

Aging is a major driver of chronic diseases and mortality, yet effective interventions against distinct aging etiologies remain limited. Hypobaric hypoxia at high altitudes accelerates aging, while D-galactose (D-gal) injection mimics metabolic aging. The gut microbiota is a key regulator of aging, but whether indigenous probiotics from the high plateaus of Tibet exert comparable or differential efficacy against distinct aging etiologies remains unclear. In this study, we systematically evaluated the protective effects of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum AL4510, a novel probiotic strain isolated

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC)-associated alterations of fecal gut microbiota have already been described, but data on the mucosal microbiota are still limited. We aimed to further define disease-specific mucosal microbial patterns independent of geography and assess the relationship to liver transplantation (LTx), gut inflammation (inflammatory bowel disease), and PSC recurrence (rPSC).
METHODS: We performed 16S ribosomal RNA gene (V3-V4) sequencing of ileocolonic biopsies from 115 patients with PSC (pre-LTx), 159 liver-transplanted patients (post_LTx, recurrence occ

INTRODUCTION: Major depressive disorder is a condition involving microbiota-gut-brain axis dysfunction. Increasing research aims to improve depression through gut microbiota regulation, including interventions such as probiotics, prebiotics, and fecal microbiota transplants. However, most research focuses on exogenous depression induced by chronic stress or drugs, with less attention given to endogenous depression. Additionally, research on gut mycobiota in depression is significantly less than that on gut bacteria.
METHODS: In the present study, Wistar-Kyoto rats were used as an endogenous d

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis-associated interstitial lung disease (RA-ILD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Tripterygium wilfordii Hook.f. [Celastraceae] glycosides (TWG) are used in RA treatment, but their dose-response relationship and involvement of the gut-lung axis in RA-ILD remain unclear.
METHODS: Collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) was established in Wistar rats. Animals were assigned to normal control (NC), model, TWG-L (9 mg/kg), TWG-M (45 mg/kg), TWG-H (90 mg/kg), and prednisolone (Pred, 5 mg/kg) groups. Treatments were admini

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence suggests that maternal-prenatal gut microbiome disturbances shape offspring allergic outcomes through modulation of the in utero immune environment. Yet, no comprehensive clinical studies in human mother–offspring dyads have deconvoluted the maternal-prenatal gut microbiome and systemic immune-metabolome signatures underlying offspring allergic predisposition. METHODS: We performed a longitudinal nested case–control study involving 128 well-characterized mother–offspring dyads from defined cases (offspring with atopic dermatitis (AD); n = 64) and controls (offspri

BACKGROUND: A number of public metagenomic studies reveal an association between the gut microbiome and various immune-mediated diseases including Behcet's uveitis (BU) and Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease (VKH). Integrated-analysis and subsequent validation of these results could be a potentially powerful way to understand the microbial signatures and their functions in these two uveitis entities.
METHODS: We integrated the sequencing data of our previous metagenomic studies on two major uveitis entities, BU and VKH as well as four other publicly available immune-mediated diseases datasets, incl

BACKGROUND: Plasma amyloid-β (Aβ) may facilitate identification of individuals with brain amyloidosis. Gut microbial dysbiosis in Alzheimer's disease (AD) is increasingly being recognized. However, knowledge about alterations of gut microbiota in preclinical AD, as well as whether the combination of plasma Aβ and gut microbiota could identify preclinical AD, remains largely unknown.
METHODS: This study recruited 34 Aβ-negative cognitively normal (CN-) participants, 32 Aβ-positive cognitively normal (CN+) participants, and 22 patients with cognitive impairment (CI), including 11 patients with

This is an integrated summary of the results obtained from a 3-decade multicenter study on bacteria isolated from surgical infections in Japan between July 1982 and March 2012. During the 3-decade study, 11,196 strains were isolated from 4,787 patients consisting of 2,132 patients with primary infection and 2,655 patients with surgical site infection. Almost half of the primary infection was peritonitis, which accounted for 42.3%-55.5%. In contrast, most of the surgical site infection was wound infection, which accounted for 49.3%-66.1%. The most commonly isolated bacteria throughout three dec

The experimental pathophysiology of organophosphorus (OP) chemical exposure has been extensively reported. Here, we describe an altered fecal bacterial biota and urine metabolome following intoxication with soman, a lipophilic G class chemical warfare nerve agent. Nonanesthetized Sprague-Dawley male rats were subcutaneously administered soman at 0.8 (subseizurogenic) or 1.0 (seizurogenic) of the 50% lethal dose (LD50) and evaluated for signs of toxicity. Animals were stratified based on seizing activity to evaluate effects of soman exposure on fecal bacterial biota and urine metabolites. Soman

Background: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States, with an annual cost of 60 billion dollars. There is evidence suggesting that in the post-TBI period, the gastrointestinal tract plays a central role in driving organ and immune dysfunction and may be the source of increased circulating proinflammatory mediators. In this study, we examined systemic inflammation and bacterial dysbiosis in patients who sustained a TBI with or without polytrauma. Using a mouse model of TBI, we further show how neuroinflammation after TBI is potentially

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Individuals with type 2 diabetes have an altered bacterial composition of their gut microbiota compared with non-diabetic individuals. However, these alterations may be confounded by medication, notably the blood-glucose-lowering biguanide, metformin. We undertook a clinical trial in healthy and previously drug-free men with the primary aim of investigating metformin-induced compositional changes in the non-diabetic state. A secondary aim was to examine whether the pre-treatment gut microbiota was related to gastrointestinal adverse effects during metformin treatment.

BACKGROUND: The efficacy of immunotherapy varies between MSI-H and MSS colorectal cancer(CRC) patients. Multiple studies have shown that gut microbiota is closely related to CRC, but the causality of them has yet to be fully established. This study aims to look for differential bacteria and related pathways by collecting feces from patients with different MS of CRC and healthy individuals, providing direction for immunotherapy of MSS CRC patients.
OBJECTIVE: 1. Explore the differences in gut microbiota between MSI-H and MSS CRC. 2.Provide new direction for the future clinical treatment of MSS
