Mercury bioaccumulation in aquatic biota along a salinity gradient in the Saint John River estuary.

Although estuaries are critical habitats for many aquatic species, the spatial trends of toxic methylmercury (MeHg) in biota from fresh to marine waters are poorly understood. Our objective was to determine if MeHg concentrations in biota changed along a salinity gradient in an estuary. Fourspine Stickleback (Apeltes quadracus), invertebrates (snails, amphipods, and chironomids), sediments, and water were collected from ten sites along the Saint John River estuary, New Brunswick, Canada in 2015 and 2016, with salinities ranging from 0.06 to 6.96. Total mercury (proxy for MeHg) was measured in

Organophosphorus and Organochlorine Pesticides Bioaccumulation by Eichhornia crassipes in Irrigation Canals in an Urban Agricultural System.

A natural wetland in Mexico City Metropolitan Area is one of the main suppliers of crops and flowers, and in consequence its canals hold a high concentration of organochlorine (OC) and organophosphorus (OP) pesticides. There is also an extensive population of water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), which is considered a plague; but literature suggests water hyacinth may be used as a phytoremediator. This study demonstrates bioaccumulation difference for the OC in vivo suggesting their bioaccumulation is ruled by their log K(ow), while all the OP showed bioaccumulation regardless of their log K(

Bioaccumulation and effects of CdTe/CdS quantum dots on Chlamydomonas reinhardtii - nanoparticles or the free ions?

In order to properly assess the environmental risk of engineered nanoparticles (ENP), it is necessary to determine their fate (including dissolution, aggregation, and bioaccumulation) under representative environmental conditions. CdTe/CdS quantum dots (QD), such as those used in medical imaging, are known to release Cd(2+) due (mainly) to the dissolution of their outer shell. In this study, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii was exposed to either a soluble Cd salt or QD at similar concentrations of total Cd. Free Cd concentrations were measured using the Absence of Gradients and Nernstian Equilibrium

Bioaccumulation and detoxification processes of Hg in the king scallop Pecten maximus: field and laboratory investigations.

Hg bioaccumulation was investigated in the king scallop Pecten maximus in the laboratory and in the field. In controlled conditions, scallops were exposed to (203)Hg through seawater, sediment and food in order to determine its uptake and depuration kinetics. In the field, Hg and metallothionein (MT) concentrations and the metal subcellular distribution were determined in scallops from two sites of the Bay of Seine (France) differently subjected to the Seine river inputs. While Hg concentrations in the whole soft parts and kidneys (viz. the highest accumulator organ) did not differ between sca

In vitro digestion and bioaccumulation of food-born processing contaminant 3-MCPD diesters in rats.

3-Monochloropropane-1,2-diol (3-MCPD) is a process-born contaminant formed during edible oil refining. While toxicity of free 3-MCPD is well established and strictly regulated, the digestive fate, absorption and tissue distribution of its fatty acid diesters remains insufficiently characterised. This study examined the hydrolysis and bioaccumulation of 3-MCPD diesters through in vitro gastro-intestinal digestion, their absorption/transport in lymph and plasma as well as their bioaccumulation in rat tissues. We showed that both, gastric and pancreatic lipases can hydrolyze 3-MCPD diesters, reac

Polyethylene terephthalate and polypropylene microplastic bioaccumulation in human blood and cancerous tissues in Algerian cases.

Due to poor waste management and excessive plastic consumption, Algeria faces an escalating concern over plastic pollution, particularly microplastics (MPs). This pioneering study provides the first baseline assessment of MPs in human biological samples from Jijel Province, Algeria. MPs were detected and characterized in blood samples and cancer tissues (breast, colon, and rectal) using organic digestion, density separation, and filtration. More than 220 MPs (100-200 µm) were identified in cancer tissues, averaging 25 particles/gram. Blood samples contained 172 MPs (50-300 µm), averaging 3 par

Changes in contaminant bioaccumulation and biochemical responses of Carcinus maenas in response to ecosystem restoration measures.

An environmental restoration programme based on Zostera noltii transplantation aimed to rehabilitate a historically multi-metal contaminated estuarine system. This study evaluates early responses of the crab Carcinus maenas during the first two years following seagrass transplantation (2021-2022), by combining tissue mercury burdens and biochemical biomarkers. Although several potentially toxic metals co-occur in the system, sediment quality guideline screening (Probable Effect Levels) identified mercury as the only element exceeding effect-based thresholds; therefore, results are interpreted

Heavy Metal Pollution and Assessment of the Bioaccumulation Potential of Earthworms from the Soil of Punjab, Pakistan.

Earthworms are widely used as biological indicators of soil contamination and are often referred to as the 'intestine of the soil'; however, their effectiveness can vary across regions and environmental conditions. The performance of earthworms as indicators of soil pollution may vary among regions, and there is a need to assess their reliability under specific environmental conditions. So, in this study, soil and earthworm samples were collected from 19 locations across Punjab, Pakistan, to assess heavy metal pollution and bioaccumulation using geoaccumulation indices (Igeo) and bioaccumulati

Pesticides and metal contaminants in Lake Chapala, Mexico: Differences in bioaccumulation and associated health risks.

Lake Chapala, Mexico's largest freshwater lake and primary drinking water source for approximately 5 million people, lacks comprehensive pesticide and metal contamination assessment across compartments. Unlike previous single-matrix or single-class studies, this is the first seasonal multi-matrix assessment of 17 pesticides and 8 heavy metals in water, sediment, and fish across eight stations over four hydroclimatic periods (2024-2025). The study targets the Poncitlán CKD hotspot and compares bioaccumulation patterns between native (Ictalurus dugesii) and invasive (Oreochromis aureus, Cyprinus

Decoupling bioaccumulation and trophic transfer: nanoatrazine accumulates in microalgae but shows limited transfer to zooplankton.

Nanoformulations of pesticides have been proposed as a strategy to improve agricultural efficiency while potentially reducing environmental contamination. However, little is known about the bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of nanopesticides in aquatic food webs. In this study, the bioaccumulation of poly(ε-caprolactone)-encapsulated nanoatrazine (nATZ-PCL) was evaluated in the microalga Raphidocelis subcapitata, as well as its potential transfer to the zooplanktonic consumer Daphnia magna through dietary and direct exposure pathways. Physicochemical characterization demonstrated that the n

A Predictive Model for the Migration and Bioaccumulation of Residual Malachite Green in Aquaculture Sediments: Simulation and Validation.

Aquatic product safety is closely linked to human health, yet the effects of historical residual drugs in aquaculture pond sediment remain unclear. Malachite green (MG), a prohibited aquaculture drug, is rapidly converted to leucomalachite green (LMG) after illegal use and may persist in bottom sediment, raising the question of whether residue-positive sediment can cause positive detections in fish at harvest. In order to answer this question, we developed a time-dependent predictive model for the sediment-water-fish system based on a food web bioaccumulation model and a sediment-water equilib

Effects of imidazole and triazole on burr medic and oilseed rape seedlings: Phytotoxicity, transformation, and bioaccumulation.

Pesticides are chemical substances of natural or synthetic origin used to control pests and insects. Environmental pollution occurs when pesticide contamination spreads away from the target plants. Pesticides and their transformation products can have adverse effects on both target and non-target plants and organisms. Azole antifungals, which are imidazole and 1H-1,2,4-triazole derivatives, are the most commonly used agents for treating invasive fungal infections. Imidazole and 1H-1,2,4-triazole are important degradation products of these substances. In this study, Brassica napus (oilseed rape

Global patterns and knowledge gaps in rare earth element bioaccumulation in wildlife: A systematic review.

Rare earth elements (REEs) are increasingly recognized as emerging environmental contaminants due to their expanding use in electronics, renewable energy, medical devices, and fertilizers. This systematic review synthesizes current knowledge on REE concentrations in free-ranging wildlife from aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. We analyzed 95 peer-reviewed studies (1976-2025) selected from Scopus and Web of Science using PRISMA 2020 guidelines, evaluating geographic distribution, taxonomic coverage, trophic level, tissue type, analytical methods, and data reporting. The number of publications

Effects of tire particles on earthworm (Eisenia andrei) fitness and bioaccumulation of tire-related chemicals.

Tire and Road Wear Particles (TRWP) are produced during the wear of tire rubber on the road pavement and contain various chemicals originating from the road environment and from the rubber. Toxic effects of TRWP and their associated chemicals on soil organisms remain poorly characterized. In a series of laboratory experiments, this study investigated the bioaccumulation kinetics of several common tire-related chemicals in the earthworm species Eisenia andrei using Cryogenically Milled Tire Tread (CMTT), as a surrogate for environmental TRWP. Effects on survival, growth, reproductive output and

SERS and SEIRA Detection of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and their Derivatives in Murine Tissues: Bioaccumulation and Clearance.

The toxicological effects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) have attracted considerable research interest due to their known bioaccumulation. However, time-resolved and longitudinal studies that examine in vivo bioaccumulation and clearance remain limited. Here we use Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) and Surface-Enhanced Infrared Absorption (SEIRA) spectroscopies to detect and track the presence of two PAHs: pyrene, benzo[a]pyrene, and one PAC: 5,12-naphthacenequinone, in murine organ tissues. Bioaccumulation, Trophic Transfer, and Biotransformation of Polychlorinated Diphenyl Ethers in a Simulated Aquatic Food Chain.

Polychlorinated diphenyl ethers (PCDEs) are detected in aquatic environments and demonstrate adverse effects in aquatic organisms. However, data regarding the environmental behavior of PCDEs in aquatic ecosystems are lacking. In the present study, a simulated aquatic food chain (Scenedesmus obliquus-Daphnia magna-Danio rerio) was constructed in a lab setting, and the bioaccumulation, trophic transfer, and biotransformation of 12 PCDE congeners were quantitatively investigated for the first time. The log-transformed bioaccumulation factors (BCFs) of PCDEs in S. obliquus, D. magna, and D. rerio

Mercury bioaccumulation and speciation in coastal invertebrates: Implications for trophic magnification in a marine food web.

Studies on mercury bioaccumulation and biomagnification in coastal invertebrates in eastern Canada are limited, but these data are necessary to determine risk of mercury exposure effects in upper trophic level organisms. We quantified methylmercury (MeHg), total mercury (THg), and stable isotopes of δ13C and δ15N in 14 species of invertebrates in the Minas Basin. The overall mean concentration of MeHg (12.78 ± 11.23 ng/g dw) was approximately 10 times below the Canadian guideline for the protection of wildlife consumers like fish and birds of 157.20 ng/g dry weight (dw). Bioaccumulation and physiological changes in the fruiting body of Agaricus bisporus (Large) sing in response to cadmium.

The bioremediation of heavy metals contaminated soils with macrofungi is a new and promising approach; hence Agaricus bisporus (Large) sing has potentially shown accumulating ability to Cd contamination. This study focused on the tolerance response by A. bisporus to different contents of Cd in the closed cup and the flat stage of fruiting body development. The contents of Cd, soluble protein, sugar, low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs), and antioxidant activity were investigated. The bioaccumulation factor and transfer factor results revealed that Cd accumulated in the cap of A. bisporu
