Human Histology and Persistence of Various Injectable Filler Substances for Soft Tissue Augmentation.

An increasing number of soft tissue filler substances have been introduced to the beauty market outside the U.S. which lackexperimental and clinical data in support of their claim. Ten commercially available filler substances were examined for biocompatibility and durability: 0.1 cc of each substance was injected deep intradermally into the volar forearm of one of the authors and observed for clinical reaction and permanence. At 1, 3, 6, and 9 months the test sites were excised, histologically examined, and graded according to foreign body reactions classification. Collagen (Zyplast) was phago

cBiT: A transcriptomics database for innovative biomaterial engineering.

Creating biomaterials that are suited for clinical application is still hampered by a lack of understanding of the interaction between a cell and the biomaterial surface it grows on. This surface communication can strongly impact cellular behavior, which in turn affects the chances of a successful interaction between a material and the host tissue. Transcriptomics data have previously been linked to measurements of biomaterial properties in order to explain the biological mechanisms underlying these cell-biomaterial interactions. However, such multi-assay data are highly complex and therefore

Method for preparation, programming, and characterization of miniaturized particulate shape-memory polymer matrices.

Their capability to change their shape on demand has created significant interest for shape-memory polymers (SMPs) in minimally invasive surgery. To evaluate the miniaturization of SMP matrices for small-sized implants or controlled release systems, a strategy to prepare and evaluate microsized SMP model particles is required. This methodological study reports the emulsion-based preparation of ~30 μm microparticles (MPs) from a phase-segregated SMP, poly(ε-caprolactone) [PCL] and poly(ω-pentadecalactone) [PPDL], with a particular focus on the effects of process parameters such as polymer solve

Sponge spicules as blueprints for the biofabrication of inorganic-organic composites and biomaterials.

While most forms of multicellular life have developed a calcium-based skeleton, a few specialized organisms complement their body plan with silica. However, of all recent animals, only sponges (phylum Porifera) are able to polymerize silica enzymatically mediated in order to generate massive siliceous skeletal elements (spicules) during a unique reaction, at ambient temperature and pressure. During this biomineralization process (i.e., biosilicification) hydrated, amorphous silica is deposited within highly specialized sponge cells, ultimately resulting in structures that range in size from mi

Advances in the management of glottic insufficiency.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Glottic insufficiency secondary to vocal fold scarring, atrophy, or paresis remains a clinically challenging problem for the laryngologist. Numerous methods have been described in the treatment of glottic insufficiency, belying the complexity of the problem. Type I thyroplasty and injection of fat, fascia, and gelatin powder have been the mainstay of treatment to date, but the ability to restore a normal mucosal waveform to a damaged vocal fold remains an elusive goal. RECENT FINDINGS: Advances in the material and biomedical sciences have allowed the introduction of newer s

Enhancing Biomedical Implants: Atomic Force Microscopy Insights into Modified Titanium Surfaces.

Medical implants are frequently used to treat musculoskeletal and dental conditions, with titanium materials standing out for their high biocompatibility. Atomic force microscopy (AFM), as an imaging and force spectroscopy tool, has emerged as a valuable technique to investigate cell-implant interactions at the nanoscale level. Here, we describe different AFM-based methodologies for the structural and nanomechanical characterization of titanium-based materials to be used as implant scaffolds in tissue engineering. These new applied methodologies may help on validating the osteointegrative pote

Innovations in Ureteral Stent Technology.

Ureteral stents are an indispensable tool in contemporary urologic patient care. They have become first-line devices for maintenance of ureteral patency postoperatively and in cases of ureteral narrowing. Despite their widespread use, these implants are associated with multiple complications including stent colic, infection, and encrustation. There is no ideal ureteric stent currently available. The aim of most recent stent innovation has been to make steps toward properties of an ideal stent. This article reviews recent technological advances in stent design and how they have attempted to tac

Dual-Protection Inorganic-Protein Coating on Mg-Based Biomaterials through Tooth-Enamel-Inspired Biomineralization.

Biocompatible magnesium alloys represent revolutionary implantable materials in dentistry and orthopedics but face challenges due to rapid biocorrosion, necessitating protective coatings to mitigate dysfunction. Directly integrating durable protective coatings onto Mg surfaces is challenging because of intrinsic low coating compactness. Herein, inspired by tooth enamel, a novel highly compact dual-protection inorganic-protein (inorganicPro) coating is in situ constructed on Mg surfaces through bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein-boosted reaction between sodium fluoride (NaF) and Mg substrates.

Use of Biobrane for extensive posterior donor site wounds.

Optimal treatment of extensive donor sites in patients with major burn injuries can be frustrating for both physician and nursing staffs and can cause great discomfort for the patients. Slow healing or infections of donor site wounds may impede other aspects of burn care and delay further skin grafting. The posterior trunk is a particularly good site for donor site harvesting in patients who have incurred extensive burns. Posterior donor site wounds have been noted to heal with less hypertrophic scar compared with other donor sites, because the epidermis and dermis allow for thicker grafts and

Immediate fascial flap reconstruction of joints and use of Biobrane in the burned limb.

There is a small percentage of burned patients who would benefit from early excision of burns and coverage of exposed large joints to prevent septic arthritis and preserve movement. There are many reports in the literature on flap coverage of exposed joints or delayed primary excision of burns with subsequent flap coverage, but the immediate excision of burn to fascia with use of local vascularized fascial flaps to cover open knee and ankle joints has not apparently been described. This case report illustrates the basic plastic surgery techniques involved and the rationale behind such aggressi

Biomaterials in Relation to Dentistry.

Dental caries remains a challenge in the improvement of oral health. It is the most common and widespread biofilm-dependent oral disease, resulting in the destruction of tooth structure by the acidic attack from cariogenic bacteria. The tooth is a heavily mineralised tissue, and both enamel and dentine can undergo demineralisation due to trauma or dietary conditions. The adult population worldwide affected by dental caries is enormous and despite significant advances in caries prevention and tooth restoration, treatments continue to pose a substantial burden to healthcare. Biomaterials play a

Glycerol-Based Soft Elastomeric Degradable Biomaterials with Tunable Physicochemical and Mechanical Properties.

The widespread clinical adoption of implantable devices has driven growing interest in biodegradable alternatives that eliminate the need for secondary removal surgeries. Among these, glycerol-based thermosets have emerged as promising biocompatible materials. Compared with established glycerol-based thermosets, incorporating shorter-chain aliphatic dicarboxylic acids into the glycerol backbone may enhance hydrophilicity and potentially accelerate hydrolytic degradation, while varying the curing conditions enables tailorable properties for biomedical applications requiring temporary structural

Dynamic Solvent Responsiveness through Polarity-Driven Shape Transformation of 4D-Printed Responsive Cellulosic Composite.

Four-dimensional (4D) printing represents a paradigm shift in additive manufacturing, enabling the creation of dynamic, stimuli-responsive structures that can change shape or function over time. This study introduces a significant advancement in this field by developing 4D-printed responsive cellulosic composite (RCC) strips consisting of varying ratios of AFFINISOL (AFF, a hydroxypropyl methylcellulose derivative) and thermoplastic starch (TPS) using fused filament fabrication (FFF) technology. Further, 4D-printed RCC strips were characterized for thermal properties, which revealed glass tran

A Contemporary Review of the Physical, Chemical and Biological Properties of Bioceramic Sealers.

Bioceramic sealers have attracted increasing attention in endodontics due to their potential biological and physicochemical properties, including bioactivity, ion release and possible chemical interaction with dentin. These materials have been suggested to support mineralisation, may contribute to sealing performance and exhibit antimicrobial effects associated with alkaline pH and calcium ion release. Compared with conventional sealers, such as epoxy resin- and zinc oxide-eugenol-based materials, bioceramic sealers may offer certain advantages in terms of biocompatibility and bioactivity; how

Tissue-Material Characteristics Determine Fibrous Encapsulation Dynamics Across Common Polymeric Surgical Biomaterials in a Tissue-Specific Mouse Foreign Body Response Model.

Common polymeric surgical biomaterials are susceptible to dysregulated fibrous encapsulation, which contributes to failure in 10% of implantable medical devices. While biomaterial factors influencing the underlying foreign body response have been extensively studied, the role of the implantation site-specifically the tissue microenvironment-remains poorly understood. Here, we explore the tissue-specificity of the foreign body response by evaluating fibrous encapsulation around clinically-relevant synthetic non-biodegradable polymers across distinct tissue microenvironments. We first characteri

Multiscale Characterization of Jute/Flax Biocomposites: Enhancing Stiffness and Durability for Load-Bearing Rehabilitation Devices.

In recent years, there has been a substantial rise in the utilization of natural fibers as a means of reinforcement in the production of polymer matrix composites. This is mostly owing to the inherent benefits it offers, including its eco-friendly nature, widespread availability, low density, and relatively high strength. Jute and flax fibers are examples of natural fibers that exhibit superior mechanical qualities as compared to other natural fibers. These fibers are widely available across the Indian subcontinent, making them cost-effective and conveniently accessible. The present work detai
