Chemical ecology and convergent evolution of natural hallucinogens: From ecological defense to conserved neural targets.

Natural hallucinogenic compounds have arisen independently across plants, fungi, and animals, evolving into a diverse chemical arsenal that includes phenethylamines, indolealkylamines, and terpenoid scaffolds. Beyond clinical and cultural frameworks, their ecological origins and evolutionary trajectories may help explain why such potent modulators of perception, emotion, and cognition persist in nature. Here, integrating chemical ecology, comparative genomics, biosynthetic logic, and evolutionary biology, we propose that these molecules may function as defensive agents or symbiosis-associated

The expression of awe: evolutionary origins and cultural elaborations of a basic emotion.

Awe is the emotion people experience when encountering stimuli that are vast and beyond their current knowledge structures. In this article, we take a basic emotion approach to the study of the expression of awe, reviewing studies of awe-related movements of facial muscles, patterns of vocalization and bodily and postural movements. We first present evidence suggesting that awe indeed is a distinct emotional state. Guided by advances in the study of multi-modal emotional expression, we then review studies of how people express awe in a pattern of mouth and gaze activity, specific vocal bursts

The chromosome-level genome provides insights into the adaptive evolution of the visual system in Oratosquilla oratoria.

BACKGROUND: The marine crustacean Oratosquilla oratoria is economically significant in seafood and aquaculture industries. However, the lack of high-quality genome assembly has hindered our understanding of O. oratoria, particularly the mechanisms underlying its developed visual system. RESULTS: We generated a chromosome-level genome assembly for O. oratoria (2.97 Gb, 44 pseudo-chromosomes) using combination sequencing strategies. Our analysis revealed that more than half of the genome was covered by repeat sequences, and LINE elements showed significant expansion. Furthermore, phylogenetic a

Loss of Conserved Noncoding Elements Likely Shaped the Evolution of Regressed Phenotypes in Cavefish.

The Mexican cavefish, Astyanax mexicanus, is a captivating model for probing cave adaptations, showcasing pronounced divergence in traits like vision, brain morphology, behavior, pigmentation, metabolism, and hypoxia tolerance compared to its surface-dwelling counterpart. However, only a small number of protein-coding variants have been found in cave-morphs, leaving the vast phenotypic gap between the two morphs largely unexplained. We aligned the genomes of five closely related teleosts and identified 46,914 conserved noncoding elements, of which 473 were specifically lost in cave-morphs. The

Tip-dating and homoplasy: reconciling the shallow molecular divergences of modern gharials with their long fossil record.

Simultaneously analysing morphological, molecular and stratigraphic data suggests a potential resolution to a major remaining inconsistency in crocodylian evolution. The ancient, long-snouted thoracosaurs have always been placed near the Indian gharial Gavialis, but their antiquity (ca 72 Ma) is highly incongruous with genomic evidence for the young age of the Gavialis lineage (ca 40 Ma). We reconcile this contradiction with an updated morphological dataset and novel analysis, and demonstrate that thoracosaurs are an ancient iteration of long-snouted stem crocodylians unrelated to modern ghari

Hemimetabolous genomes reveal molecular basis of termite eusociality.

Around 150 million years ago, eusocial termites evolved from within the cockroaches, 50 million years before eusocial Hymenoptera, such as bees and ants, appeared. Here, we report the 2-Gb genome of the German cockroach, Blattella germanica, and the 1.3-Gb genome of the drywood termite Cryptotermes secundus. We show evolutionary signatures of termite eusociality by comparing the genomes and transcriptomes of three termites and the cockroach against the background of 16 other eusocial and non-eusocial insects. Dramatic adaptive changes in genes underlying the production and perception of pherom

Co-evolution between transposable elements and their hosts: a major factor in genome size evolution?

Most models of genome size evolution emphasize changes in relative rates of and/or the efficacy of selection on insertions and deletions. However, transposable elements (TEs) are a major contributor to genome size evolution, and since they experience their own selective pressures for expansion, genome size changes may in part be driven by the dynamics of co-evolution between TEs and their hosts. Under this perspective, predictions about the conditions that allow for genome expansion may be altered. In this review, we outline the evidence for TE-host co-evolution, discuss the conditions under w

Phased ecological assembly of Triassic marine reptile faunas following the Permian-Triassic mass extinction: ecospace dynamics in South China.

The Permian-Triassic mass extinction triggered a fundamental reorganization of marine ecosystems, yet the community-level functional dynamics of early marine reptile radiations remain understudied. Here we quantify ecospace dynamics of Triassic marine reptile faunas across an approximately 20-million-year sequence in South China, integrating 10 functional traits of fossil taxa and modern ecological analogues. We identify five ecotypes defined by habitat use, foraging modes and trophic strategy. Statistical analyses reveal cumulative and incremental faunal assembly in South China in three phase

Defining and finding lifelike entities with a lazy filter.

Our binary intuitive understanding of life and lifelikeness is good enough for daily life, but not for research in the natural sciences. Here we propose an operational definition of the lifeness of an entity, or object defined by its structure, as a scalar, namely the product of its defining information (algorithmic complexity) integrated over its lifetime. We provide a hierarchical Gaussian, yet parameter-free, dynamical filtering algorithm that can efficiently and on-the-fly fit configurations of entities constituted by moving particles to a tree structure that can model a wide range of hier

The pgip family in soybean and three other legume species: evidence for a birth-and-death model of evolution.

BACKGROUND: Polygalacturonase-inhibiting proteins (PGIPs) are leucine-rich repeat (LRR) plant cell wall glycoproteins involved in plant immunity. They are typically encoded by gene families with a small number of gene copies whose evolutionary origin has been poorly investigated. Here we report the complete characterization of the full complement of the pgip family in soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) and the characterization of the genomic region surrounding the pgip family in four legume species. RESULTS: BAC clone and genome sequence analyses showed that the soybean genome contains two pgip

Mass extinctions and land plant evolution.

Nearly all modern animal phyla emerged 'suddenly' during the early Cambrian Period about 518 million years ago (Ma) in an event known as the Cambrian explosion. Following this evolutionary milestone, the marine invertebrate fossil record is punctuated by five major mass extinction events, collectively called the 'Big Five'. These events include the end-Ordovician, Late Devonian, end-Permian, end-Triassic, and end-Cretaceous mass extinctions (Figure 1). Among them, the end-Permian extinction was the most catastrophic event, resulting in the loss of approximately 81% of marine species within a s

The phylogenetic signal of extinction through the rise and fall of early vertebrates: field of bullets or clustered strike?

We investigate patterns of phylogenetic selectivity of extinction in early aquatic vertebrates from the Silurian to the Carboniferous, an interval punctuated by one of the "Big Five" mass extinctions and marked by many critical anatomical (e.g., jaws, limbs) and ecological (e.g., macrophagy, terrestrialization) vertebrate evolutionary innovations. Using a new >1,300 taxon, formally inferred supertree, we show that phylogenetic extinction clustering in early vertebrates varied through time and between major ecomorphological divisions of the tree. At the end of the Silurian and into the Early De

Way to operationalization of the life process definition 'from purposeful information' resulting from Abel's proposal; mechanisms of evolutionary progress.

This complements my article last year, which proposed two coherent definitions of the life process, with an operationalization of one of them, which gives definition of living object and arose from Abel's article this year. The second, complementary topic is the problem of progress in biological evolution. All these topics are connected by the "purposeful information theory," which offers an objectively defined purpose and purposeful information, linked to causality and distinguishing such a concept of "purpose" from subjective intention. Both my and Abel's definitions of life assume that the

In situ observations reveal a link between association behaviour, camouflage and eye complexity in midwater amphipods.

In the largest habitat on earth-the deep open ocean-water depth is typically linked to adaptations for camouflage and vision. Recently, it was hypothesized that association behaviour is a primary evolutionary driver of the great eye diversity in a group of crustaceans, the hyperiid amphipods (suborder Hyperiidea). Here, we test that hypothesis by investigating the link between association behaviour (symbiotic or free swimming), depth, eye complexity and camouflage across a broad range of hyperiid diversity. We collated a unique dataset containing observations of 48 of the 80 hyperiid genera fr

The blood-brain barrier.

In animals, the central nervous system (CNS) plays a crucial role as the primary organ responsible for integrating environmental information and coordinating the responses of the organism. To protect its intricate and delicate structure, the CNS is enclosed within the rigid confines of the skull, an effective defence against physical trauma. However, threats to the brain also arise internally, in the form of toxins, pathogens, or activated immune cells. This has driven the evolution of specialised vascular adaptations that tightly control exchanges between the blood and the CNS. These 'blood b

Asymmetric arms races between predators and prey: a tug of war between the life-dinner principle and the rare-enemy principle.

Antagonistic co-evolution can be asymmetric, where one species lags behind another. Asymmetry in a predator-prey context is expressed by the 'life-dinner principle', a classic informal model predicting that prey should be in some sense ahead in this arms race, since prey are running for their lives, while predators lag as they only run for their dinner. The model has undergone surprisingly little theoretical scrutiny. We derive analytical models that show coevolutionary outcomes do not always align with the life-dinner principle. Our results show that other important asymmetries can easily rev

Measuring Biodiversity and Extinction-Present and Past.

How biodiversity is changing in our time represents a major concern for all organismal biologists. Anthropogenic changes to our planet are decreasing species diversity through the negative effects of pollution, habitat destruction, direct extirpation of species, and climate change. But major biotic changes-including those that have both increased and decreased species diversity-have happened before in Earth's history. Biodiversity dynamics in past eras provide important context to understand ecological responses to current environmental change. The work of assessing biodiversity is woven into

An evolutionary strategy for a stealthy intracellular Brucella pathogen.

Brucella is an intracellular bacterial pathogen that causes abortion and infertility in mammals and leads to a debilitating febrile illness that can progress into a long lasting disease with severe complications in humans. Its virulence depends on survival and replication properties in host cells. In this review, we describe the stealthy strategy used by Brucella to escape recognition of the innate immunity and the means by which this bacterium evades intracellular destruction. We also discuss the development of adaptive immunity and its modulation during brucellosis that in course leads to ch

Hypothesis: hemimelia and the maintenance of pentadactyly?

The limbs of extant terrestrial vertebrates possess five or fewer digits, yet, polydactyly is accepted as being the ancestral state. Therefore, I propose a hypothesis to account for the maintenance of digital number at five or fewer digits, based on a selective disadvantage associated with polydactylous states in terrestrial vertebrates. This disadvantage is not associated with the polydactyly per se, but rather with the hemimelia which is a common feature of polydactylies in mammals. Hemimelia causes a twisting, or luxation, of the distal segment of the limb, which is due to a malformation of

The origin and diversification of a novel protein family in venomous snakes.

The genetic origins of novelty are a central interest of evolutionary biology. Most new proteins evolve from preexisting proteins but the evolutionary path from ancestral gene to novel protein is challenging to trace, and therefore the requirements for and order of coding sequence changes, expression changes, or gene duplication are not clear. Snake venoms are important novel traits that are comprised of toxins derived from several distinct protein families, but the genomic and evolutionary origins of most venom components are not understood. Here, we have traced the origin and diversification
