Effect of first order chemical reactions on the dispersion coefficient associated with laminar flow through fibrosis affected lung.

In this paper, we worked on the effective area average concentration and dispersion coefficient associated with the unsteady flow, to understand the dispersion in the fibrosis-affected lung. We assumed that the tube wall (i.e. alveolar or pulmonary capillary wall) is thicker than its normal size due to fibrosis and chemical species may go through linear first-order kinetic reactions, one is reversible phase exchange with the wall material and other is irreversible absorption into the tube wall. By considering diffusivity as a function of thickness, the dispersion can be calculated by the distr

A biomechanical model of the human defecatory system to investigate mechanisms of continence.

This article presents a method to fabricate, measure and control a physical simulation of the human defecatory system to investigate individual and combined effects of anorectal angle and sphincter pressure on continence. To illustrate the capabilities and clinical relevance of the work, the influence of a passive-assistive artificial anal sphincter (FENIXTM) is evaluated. A model rectum and associated soft tissues, based on geometry from an anonymised computed tomography dataset, was fabricated from silicone and showed behavioural realism to the biological system and ex vivo tissue. Simulated

A combination of the finite element analysis and experimental indentation via the cornea.

The purpose of this study was to perform a set of experimental indentation test to certify our proposed eye model enables to have a better deformation assessment for the eye globe under the indentation load compared to other eye models. To do that, twenty-four enucleated human globes were removed from the cadavers. A screw at 5 different loading rates indented to the eye globes and the resulting macroscopic force-displacement as a result of the deformation in the apex of the cornea was measured. The experimental results revealed significantly higher stiffness, elastic modulus, and maximum forc

Biomechanical markers and theoretical concepts related to haemophilic ankle and subtalar joint arthropathy: introducing the term 'haemophilic tarsal pan-arthropathy'.

BACKGROUND: Although regular factor replacement can reduce the incidence of joint bleeds and slow down the development of haemophilic arthropathy, the ankle joint remains particularly vulnerable even in children with haemophilia on primary or secondary prophylaxis and is now the primary joint affected. The heterogeneity in the pathoaetiology of haemophilic ankle arthropathy means that the functional consequences of early stage of ankle arthropathy are difficult to define as early morphological and structural changes can be observed in clinically asymptomatic ankles. In this context, understand

Structural and mechanical characterisation of bridging veins: A review.

Bridging veins drain the venous blood from the cerebral cortex into the superior sagittal sinus (SSS) and doing so they bridge the subdural space. Despite their importance in head impact biomechanics, little is known about their properties with respect to histology, morphology and mechanical behaviour. Knowledge of these characteristics is essential for creating a biofidelic finite element model to study the biomechanics of head impact, ultimately leading to the improved design of protective devices by setting up tolerance criteria. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the state-of-th

Mechanical and biomechanical analysis of a linear piston design for angular-velocity-based orthotic control.

A linear piston hydraulic angular-velocity-based control knee joint was designed for people with knee-extensor weakness to engage knee-flexion resistance when knee-flexion angular velocity reaches a preset threshold, such as during a stumble, but to otherwise allow free knee motion. During mechanical testing at the lowest angular-velocity threshold, the device engaged within 2 degrees knee flexion and resisted moment loads of over 150 Nm. The device completed 400,000 loading cycles without mechanical failure or wear that would affect function. Gait patterns of nondisabled participants were sim

A comparison of the human lumbar intervertebral disc mechanical response to normal and impact loading conditions.

Thirty-four percent of U.S. Navy high speed craft (HSC) personnel suffer from lower back injury and low back pain, compared with 15 to 20% of the general population. Many of these injuries are specifically related to the intervertebral disc, including discogenic pain and accelerated disc degeneration. Numerous studies have characterized the mechanical behavior of the disc under normal physiological loads, while several have also analyzed dynamic loading conditions. However, the effect of impact loads on the lumbar disc--and their contribution to the high incidence of low back pain among HSC pe

Mechanical characterization of the softening behavior of human vaginal tissue.

The mechanical properties of vaginal tissue need to be characterized to perform accurate simulations of prolapse and other pelvic disorders that commonly affect women. This is also a fundamental step towards the improvement of therapeutic techniques such as surgery. In this paper, the softening behavior or Mullins effect of vaginal tissue is studied by proposing an appropriate constitutive model. This effect is an important factor after the birth, since vaginal tissue has been supporting a high load distribution and therefore does not recover its original behavior. Due to the anisotropy of the

In vivo tretinoin-induced changes in skin mechanical properties.

Topical tretinoin has been reported as having anti-aging effects on photodamaged skin. The purpose of this study was to evaluate tretinoin-induced changes in the mechanical properties of the skin of 18 patients (aged 39 +/- 8 years) after 4 months of treatment with topical 0.05% tretinoin on one forearm and a placebo base cream on the other. The biomechanical skin parameters investigated were elasticity, extensibility and hysteresis and data were normalized for skin thickness. A slight but non-significant increase of skin elasticity was detected in the tretinoin-treated sites using low-stressi

The effects of cyclic stretching on tensile properties of the rabbit's skeletal muscle.

OBJECTIVE: To define the threshold of muscle injury with cyclic passive stretch. DESIGN: The changes in the load-deformation curve of muscle-tendon unit were monitored until the failure point by an in vivo rabbit model. BACKGROUND: Muscle injuries range in severity from a simple strain to complete rupture. Although strains occur more frequently than complete failures, only a few studies have investigated the phenomena of these sub-failure injuries. Monitoring of the continuum for stretch-induced injury allows us to define the threshold of stretch injury. METHODS: Thirty rabbits' triceps surae

Development and experimental characterization of a cadaveric stance simulator for residual limb biomechanics.

Understanding the biomechanical interaction between residual limbs and prosthetic sockets is essential for optimizing prosthesis design and minimizing tissue injury. Existing cadaveric stance simulators have not been specifically designed to examine socket-residual limb biomechanics. This study designed, constructed, and evaluated a cadaveric stance simulator capable of applying physiologically representative compressive forces through residual limbs. The long-term objective is to utilize dynamic stereo x-ray (DSX) to quantify 3D skin strain at the socket-residual limb interface, for which thi

Mechanical signature of cancer cells: From cytoskeletal alterations to cell rheology.

The continued rise in cancer-related deaths suggests that the precise nature of the disease remains poorly understood. In the field of cellular mechanics, researchers have identified mechanobiological aspects of cancer cells by examining the link between their physical and molecular properties and functions, thereby revealing some of their previously unknown characteristics. Therefore, expanding scientific insight in this area may deepen our understanding of genetic and mechanical interactions and clarify the functional mechanisms at both the cellular and subcellular levels. Accordingly, in th

Bacteria harness torque-induced buckling instability for flagellar wrapping.

Recent advances in microscopy techniques has uncovered unique aspects of flagella-driven motility in bacteria. A remarkable example is the discovery of flagellar wrapping, a phenomenon whereby a bacterium wraps its flagellum (or flagellar bundle) around its cell body and propels itself like a corkscrew, enabling locomotion in highly viscous or confined environments. For certain bacterial species, this flagellar-wrapping mode is crucial for establishing selective symbiotic relationships with their hosts. The transformation of a flagellum from an extended to a folded (wrapped) state is triggered

Dual Optical Elastography Techniques Reveal the Regulation of Corneal Stiffness by Collagen XIV.

Collagen XIV is a fibril-associated collagen with interrupted triple helices (FACIT) that helps regulate collagen fibril spacing, alignment, and extracellular matrix organization. Its role in corneal biomechanics remains incompletely understood. Here, we investigated murine wild-type (WT) and collagen XIV-deficient (Col14a1-/-) corneas using complementary optical elastography modalities: Brillouin microscopy and air-coupled ultrasound optical coherence elastography (ACUS-OCE). Brillouin microscopy generated high-resolution maps of Brillouin frequency shift in WT and Col14a1-/- corneas (N = 4 p

Effect of freezing on mechanical properties of ovine brain tissue.

Freezing at -20 °C impacts the mechanical properties of post mortem brain tissue, which has implications for forensic science, particularly for estimating the post mortem interval (PMI). Freezing is examined as a method that may offer an extended window for forensic analysis by halting tissue degradation processes or allow tissue transfer to specialized departments. A rheological examination of samples from various brain regions of 21 ovine brains (frontal lobe, anterior deep brain, posterior deep brain, parietal lobe, superior colliculus, medulla, pons, cerebellum) was conducted. Advancing glaucoma research with multiphysics continuum mechanics modelling: Opportunities and open challenges.

This review examines the emerging role of mechanistic mathematical models based on continuum mechanics to address current challenges in glaucoma research. At present, the advent of Artificial Intelligence and data-based models have resulted in significant progress in drug candidate screening, target identification and delivery optimization for glaucoma treatment. Physics-based models on the other hand offer mechanistic insight by modelling fundamental physical knowledge. Mechanistic models, and specifically those based on continuum mechanics, have the potential to contribute to a better unders

On the biomechanics of a novel L5-S1 posterior fixation system: A finite element study.

Low back pain is estimated to affect more than 70% of the population. Recently, interspinous posterior devices are gaining attention as a less invasive alternative to the traditional pedicle screw systems. However, since most of these devices are not suitable for the L5-S1 segment, the goals for this study are to design a tailored fixation system for the L5-S1 level and to study its effects on the degenerated spine. To that end, a finite element model of the L4-S1 spinal segment was developed, considering three different clinical stages (healthy, mildly degenerated and moderately degenerated).

How Important is Position in Adaptive Treadmill Control?

To more closely mimic overground walking, researchers are developing adaptive treadmills (ATMs) that update belt speed in real-time based on user gait mechanics. Many existing ATM control schemes are solely based on position on the belt and do not respond to changes in gait mechanics, like propulsive forces, that result in increased overground walking speed. To target natural causal mechanisms to alter speed, we developed an ATM controller that adjusts speed via changes in position, step length, and propulsion. Gains on each input dictate the impact of the corresponding parameter on belt speed

A novel method for simulating ex vivo tooth extractions under varying applied loads.

BACKGROUND: Tooth extraction is a common surgical procedure where the invasiveness of the surgery can affect the nature of the dentoalveolar remodelling which follows. However, there is very little biomechanical data relating the loading applied during tooth extraction to the outcomes of the procedure. The purpose of this pilot study is to present a novel ex vivo experimental method for measuring tooth extraction mechanics and to explore preliminary metrics for predicting extraction success. METHODS: A custom experimental apparatus was developed in-house to extract central incisors from ex vi

Individualized Learning-Based Ground Reaction Force Estimation in People Post-Stroke Using Pressure Insoles.

Stroke is a leading cause of gait disability that leads to a loss of independence and overall quality of life. The field of clinical biomechanics aims to study how best to provide rehabilitation given an individual's impairments. However, there remains a disconnect between assessment tools used in biomechanical analysis and in clinics. In particular, 3-dimensional ground reaction forces (3D GRFs) are used to quantify key gait characteristics, but require lab-based equipment, such as force plates. Recent efforts have shown that wearable sensors, such as pressure insoles, can estimate GRFs in re
