Improving understanding of capacity to consent to sensitive HIV biomedical prevention research among adolescents and their parents or guardians in Rakai Uganda (ICARE): a quasi-experimental nonequivalent groups design protocol.

BACKGROUND: For research on sensitive topics like HIV, it is critical to understand the capacity of adolescents to provide informed consent, as parental consent has been identified as the greatest barrier to adolescent participation in biomedical research. In many countries including low-and middle-income countries, where 90% of adolescents live, adolescents can consent to sexual and reproductive healthcare but require parent/guardian permission to participate in research before age 18 - leading to adolescent underrepresentation and systematic exclusion from biomedical and behavioral studies.

Embedding lived experience in mental health research: what we need to pack (and unpack) for the future in mental health research and translation.

The incorporation of lived experience in mental health research has been a challenge for decades, pushing the boundaries of research to focus on the priorities of those most impacted. The people who should be the ultimate beneficiaries of research and its translation hold significant knowledge about both the topics of research and the way it should be respectfully conducted. However, despite policy, funding and most recently publishing directives that purport to support genuine lived experience-focused and -led research, progress remains slow, and debates are frequently still dominated by non-

Connecting the dots in neuroscience research: The future of evidence synthesis.

Making progress in neuroscience research involves learning from existing data. In this perspective piece, we explore the potential of a data-driven evidence ecosystem to connect all primary data streams, and synthesis efforts to inform evidence-based research and translational success from bench to bedside. To enable this transformation, we set out how we can produce evidence designed with evidence curation in mind. All data should be findable, understandable, and easily synthesisable, using a combination of human and machine effort. This will require shifts in research culture and tailored in

Alzheimer's disease research and development: a call for a new research roadmap.

Epidemiological projections of the prevalence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias, the rapidly expanding population over the age of 65, and the enormous societal consequence on health, economics, and community foretell of a looming global public health crisis. Currently available treatments for AD are symptomatic, with modest effect sizes and limited impact on longer term disease outcomes. There have been no newly approved pharmaceutical treatments in the last decade, despite enormous efforts to develop disease-modifying treatments directed at Alzheimer's-associated pathology. An

Alzheimer's disease-cancer research (inception to 2025): trends, themes, translational pathways, and insights from highly cited studies.

Alzheimer's disease-cancer research (ADCR) has gained increasing attention due to paradoxical epidemiological associations and shared yet oppositely regulated biological mechanisms; however, the field lacks an integrated synthesis of its intellectual and thematic structure. This study comprehensively mapped the longitudinal evolution, collaboration patterns, and conceptual architecture of ADCR. Scopus-indexed articles published between 1968 and 2025 were retrieved using a structured TITLE-ABS-KEY search strategy. Bibliometric indicators were analyzed using the Bibliometrix R package (Biblioshi

The Day I Was Told I Wasn't Doing Science-And Why I'm Grateful for It.

After being told that my work was "not independent enough" and that I was "not doing real science," I began to question how academic medicine defines success. Through teamwork in translational HIV-1 research and community-engaged programs like The Last Gift, I have come to see that independence is an illusion, and that collaboration, empathy, and connection are the true engines of discovery and impactful research. This reflection challenges the traditional, hegemonic, metrics of scientific achievement and calls for a broader definition that values mentorship, equity, and collective progress as

Framework for advancing rigorous research.

There is a pressing need to increase the rigor of research in the life and biomedical sciences. To address this issue, we propose that communities of 'rigor champions' be established to campaign for reforms of the research culture that has led to shortcomings in rigor. These communities of rigor champions would also assist in the development and adoption of a comprehensive educational platform that would teach the principles of rigorous science to researchers at all career stages.

Streamlining research by using existing tools.

Over the past two decades, the health research enterprise has matured rapidly, and many recognize an urgent need to translate pertinent research results into practice, to help improve the quality, accessibility, and affordability of US healthcare. Streamlining research operations would speed translation, particularly for multisite collaborations. However, the culture of research discourages reusing or adapting existing resources or study materials. Too often, researchers start studies and multisite collaborations from scratch-reinventing the wheel. Our team developed a compendium of resources

European science for health research needs and priorities.

The European research landscape for developing new diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic interventions is fraught with challenges. Scarcity of qualified talent, limited funding for laboratories and research infrastructure, geopolitical competition, and increasing complexity of data systems all require creativity, leadership, and vision to advance science and translate research results into effective solutions. This paper aimed to identify research priorities across the seven member organisations of the European Science for Health (EurSci4Health) community. The leadership of the membership or

How to build a framework to establish a patient research partner network in rheumatology research: a report of a 2-year implementation project.

BACKGROUND: Patient research partners (PRPs) are people living with a relevant disease who actively contribute to research. Their contribution is beneficial for any research project. Although the inclusion of PRPs in rheumatology research is increasingly recommended, its practical implementation, particularly in translational research, remains limited . Enhancing PRP engagement requires a clear understanding of the necessary steps. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to show steps to achieve successful collaboration between PRPs and researchers in clinical and transitional research in rheumatology. M

Translating research into practice-implementation recommendations for pediatric rheumatology; Proceedings of the childhood arthritis and rheumatology research alliance 2020 implementation science retreat.

The translation of research findings into clinical practice is challenging, especially fields like in pediatric rheumatology, where the evidence base is limited, there are few clinical trials, and the conditions are rare and heterogeneous. Implementation science methodologies have been shown to reduce the research- to- practice gap in other clinical settings may have similar utility in pediatric rheumatology. This paper describes the key discussion points from the inaugural Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance Implementation Science retreat held in February 2020. The aim of t
