Breastfeeding infants who were extremely low birth weight.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the clinical effect of breastfeedings and bottle feedings in extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants (birth weight </=800 g). METHODS: A total of 12 ELBW infants (mean birth weight, 672 +/- 95 g; mean gestation, 26 +/- 2 weeks) served as their own controls in this prospective study comparing physiologic parameters during bottle and breastfeeding. The infants were put to breast the same week they began on bottle feedings of human milk or premature infant formula (mean gestation, 35 weeks). One breastfeeding and one bottle feeding were observed each day for 10 days. Pre-

[Good prognosis for very low birth weight infants].

A population-based multicentre study, comprising all very low birthweight (VLBW; < or = 1,500 g) infants born alive in the south-east region of Sweden during a 15-month period, was performed in the late 1980s. Among the VLBW infants there were 107 lifebirths (a rate of 0.72%), 86 (80.4%) neonatal survivors and no late deaths. Twenty (18.4%) had intracranial complications, two (2.3%) retinopathy of prematurity, grade 3, and six (5.6%) bronchopulmonary dysplasia. At follow-up at 18 months of uncorrected age, the VLBW infants were still lighter in weight and of shorter stature than control group

Employment and low birth weight in black women.

Recent studies have not shown adverse effects of employment during pregnancy on the pregnancy outcome, but most have not successfully distinguished factors due to work-related physical and mental strain from differences in social, economic and cultural characteristics between employed and non-employed women. We analyzed data from the Alameda County Case-Control Study of Low Birth Weight to address the question of employment as a risk factor for low birth weight in more depth. Subjects in the study were singleton infants without congenital malformations born in 1987 to black or white, non-hispa

Maternal smoking, urinary cotinine levels and birth-weight.

The smoking habits of 300 consecutive pregnant women and of other members of their household were obtained by interview at 16 and 32 weeks' gestation and after delivery. Urine samples for estimation of cotinine were collected at the same times during pregnancy and on admission in labour. Both self-reports of active maternal smoking and urinary cotinine levels were significantly associated with lighter babies but urinary cotinine correlated the better. Active maternal smoking was associated with a decrease in birth-weight of 12 g for every cigarette smoked in a day while there was a decrease of

Birth weight of children with congenital heart disease.

Birth weights of 843 children with congenital heart disease (CHD) were compared to the respective data of a normal West German population. On average, the CHD group had significantly lower birth weights, but the weight deficit was far less pronounced than in previous studies. The decrease in birth weight was distinct only in children with tetralogy of Fallot and atrial septal defect. Compared to normal newborns, patients with CHD were more often small for gestational age (15.0%) or had a low (less than 2500 g) birth weight (8.6%). The prevalence of prematurity was not increased. Parental nutrition in sick low-birth-weight neonates.

T. P. N. (aminoacids-glucose-fat) or aminoacids and glucose (A-G.) was given to 49 premature low-birth-weight neonates through peripheral veins for 7--42 days. The T. P. N. infusate contained glucose 12--20.5 g/kg/day and a standard dose of 2 g/kg/day for aminoacids and fat. The patients formed 4 groups: Twenty neonates were healthy but unable to tolerate oral feeding. Ten of them (group A) received T. P. N. and ten (Group B) received only A-G. Twenty nine neonates suffered from serious illness: 14 of them (Group C) received T. P. N. and 15 (Group D) A-G. In healthy neonates the weight gain wa

[Glucose disposal in very low birth weight infants ].

Glucose disposal was studied in six very low birth weight infants (birth weight 1093 +/- 67 g (M +/- SEM), gestational age 29.8 +/- 0.6 weeks, postnatal age 5.2 +/- 0.9 days) by constant infusion steady state technique. All babies required artificial ventilation because of respiratory distress syndrome (four) or aspiration pneumonia (two). Nine healthy prematures of comparable birth weight, gestational age, and postnatal age formed the control group. During a constant glucose infusion at a rate of 8 mg/kg/min (7.7 +/- 0.2) mean blood glucose levels of the sick infants were higher than the corr

Unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia in very low birth weight infants.

In very low birth weight infants, the occurrence of bilirubin-related brain damage has been repeatedly observed at low serum bilirubin concentrations in close association with altered pathophysiologic status (hypoxia, acidosis, hypothermia, and so on). This increased susceptibility is accompanied by increased severity and duration of unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia as compared with more mature infants. Clinical manifestations of kernicterus in very low birth weight infants are almost always nonspecific. No single biochemical or physiologic measurement is sufficient to predict the risk for deve

Massive intracerebellar hemorrhage in low-birth-weight infants.

The clinical and pathologic observations of massive intracerebellar hemorrhage (destruction of at least one-third of cerebellar tissue) are described in six low-birth-weight infants. In all infants, severe progressive apnea associated with a falling hematocrit were the prominent clinical features. Four infants were asphyxiated at birth. Some degree of cerebellar hemorrhage (macroscopic or microscopic) was observed in 21% of 157 newborn brains examined at autopsy. The cause of massive intracerebellar hemorrhage is unknown, but may result from deforming pressures on the skull secondary to perina

Congenital heart disease in low birth weight infants.

In this study of low birth weight infants (less than 2500 g), we compared the birth weight distribution of patients with patent ductus arteriosus associated with prematurity with that of patients having congenital heart disease other than patent ductus arteriosus. Among 1436 low birth weight infants 37 infants had congenital heart disease other than patent ductus arteriosus and 198 had isolated ductus arteriosus. Infants with congenital heart disease had a mean birth weight of 2018 grams (standard deviation = 370 g) which was significantly greater than that of infants with patent ductus arteri

Airway diseases in very low birth weight infants.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the incidence and characteristics of airway diseases in very low birth weight infants (VLBWIs). METHODS: A retrospective study of 214 inborn VLBWIs admitted to our NICU between April 2009 and March 2022 (approval no: 2023-0008). Neonatologists ourselves performed bronchoscopy to diagnose airway diseases. RESULTS: Symptomatic airway diseases were present in 36/214 (16.8%) of VLBWIs. Common airway diseases were tracheobronchomalacia (TBM) and pharyngomalacia. Infants with airway diseases had shorter gestational age, lower birth weight, more boys, and more moderate/severe

Gestational Glucose Intolerance and Birth Weight-Related Complications.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the risks of large-for-gestational-age birth weight (LGA) and birth weight-related complications in pregnant individuals with gestational glucose intolerance, an abnormal screening glucose loading test result without meeting gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) criteria. METHODS: In a retrospective cohort study of 46,989 individuals with singleton pregnancies who delivered after 28 weeks of gestation, those with glucose loading test results less than 140 mg/dL were classified as having normal glucose tolerance. Those with glucose loading test results of 140 mg/dL or high

Maternal Thyroid Function and Birth Weight in Twins.

CONTEXT: Thyroid hormones are associated with birth weight in singleton pregnancy. Twin pregnancies need more thyroid hormones to maintain the normal growth and development of the fetuses compared with single pregnancy. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the association of thyroid hormones and birth weight in twins. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study in a Chinese population. Pregnant women who received regular antenatal health care and delivered live-born twins from 2014 to 2019 were included (n = 1626). Linear mixed model with restricted cubic splines and logistic regression mod

Extremely Low Birth Weight and Accelerated Biological Aging.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Extremely low birth weight (ELBW) (<1000 g) survivors are exposed to elevated levels of physiologic stress during their lives and may be susceptible to accelerated aging. Using the oldest known longitudinally followed cohort of ELBW survivors, we compared biological aging in this group using an epigenetic clock to a sample of matched normal birth weight (NBW) (>2500 g) control participants. METHODS: Buccal cells were collected from 45 ELBW survivors and 49 NBW control participants at 30 to 35 years of age. Epigenetic age was calculated from the weighted average of D

Intergenerational Transmission of Birth Weight Across 3 Generations.

While previous studies have shown intergenerational transmission of birth weight from mother to child, whether the continuity persists across 3 generations has rarely been assessed. We used the Aberdeen Maternity and Neonatal Databank (United Kingdom) to examine the intergenerational correlations of birth weight, birth weight adjusted for gestational age and sex, and small- and large-for-gestational-age births across 3 generations among 1,457 grandmother-mother-child triads. All participants were born between 1950 and 2015. The intergenerational transmission was examined with linear regression

Tubular dysfunction in extremely low birth weight survivors.

BACKGROUND: Extremely low birth weight (ELBW) survivors may develop glomerulosclerosis due to low nephron number, whereas their tubular function remains unknown except for hypercalciuria and phosphaturia. METHODS: Fifty-three subjects (30 boys and 23 girls, aged 7 months-19 years, median 36 months) were studied retrospectively. The median gestational age and birth weight were 26 weeks (range 22-32) and 745 g (range 316-999), respectively.
