Data on sexual practices, collected during studies of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in 1978 and 1979, were analyzed for 4910 homosexual and bisexual men from Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and St Louis. Data on sexual practices in 1978 showed that white participants had larger numbers of non-steady male sexual partners and engaged in oral-genital activities more frequently but were equally likely to engage in anal intercourse as black and Hispanic participants. San Francisco participants had more non-steady sex partners and were more likely to engage in receptive anal interco

Because gay and bisexual men continue to be the largest at-risk group for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) related conditions, the special role of substance abuse, and not just intravenous drug abuse, must be understood in order to provide adequate services and prevention. Gay men and women appear to have a higher incidence of substance abuse than the general population. Genetic, biochemical, societal, and cultural factors may all contribute to this increase, especially the overwhelming impact of societal homophobia. To address the treatment barriers to gay and bisexual men seeking or needin

Bisexual and other multigender-attracted (e.g., pansexual, queer) people (bi+) report disproportionately high posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) linked to a high frequency of discrimination and general trauma exposure. Bi+ people of color (POC) may be particularly vulnerable to PTSS given exposure to intersectional discrimination (e.g., LGBTQ+ racism, racial/ethnic heterosexism). Identity conflict (i.e., perceived incongruence between one's sexual and racial/ethnic identities) may link intersectional discrimination to PTSS. Using cross-sectional survey data from 295 bi+ POC (Mage = 27.6 year

Bisexual women report more alcohol use and sexual risk-taking than lesbian or heterosexual women. Few studies have examined the underlying mechanisms associating stress sources (binegativity, childhood trauma) with drinking and sexual risk-taking behaviors among bisexual women. Impulsivity may be one such mechanism. This study tested if impulsivity served as a mechanism between childhood trauma, binegativity, alcohol use, and sexual risk-taking. Participants (N = 225) were cisgender, heavy drinking, bisexual women ages 18-30 who completed an online survey. Results showed a significant indirect

BACKGROUND: Prescription tranquilizer misuse poses negative health outcomes including respiratory distress and overdose. Given the higher prevalence of substance use by sexual minority individuals, assessing the prevalence and motives of prescription tranquilizer misuse in this group is a priority. This study examined prescription tranquilizer misuse by sexual identity using a US nationally representative dataset.
METHODS: We used the adult sample from the 2021-2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) (N = 139,524). The outcome was past-month prescription tranquilizer misuse, inclu

OBJECTIVE: Adolescent men who have sex with men (AMSM) have high HIV incidence and low rates of HIV testing and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use. There are few evidence-based HIV prevention programs that meet the unique needs of AMSM. The sequential, multiple assignment, randomized trial (SMART) program is a stepped care package of increasingly intensive eHealth interventions that were developed specifically for English- and Spanish-speaking AMSM. The sequence included universal sexuality education (SMART Sex Ed), an automated motivation and behavioral skills focused intervention (SMART Squ

This study explores emotional mechanisms that help explain the relationships between gay and bisexual men's sexual identity, perceptions of mpox risk, and their intentions to take protective action against mpox. An online survey of cisgender gay and bisexual men (N = 393; 44.8% gay) showed that identity salience was positively associated with fear and perceptions of mpox risk, but risk perceptions were not significantly associated with behavioral intentions. Additionally, identity salience was positively associated with shame, which in turn was associated with reduced intentions to take protec

In recent decades, much attention has been placed on reducing health disparities that have plagued the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer or questioning community. Significant health disparities continue to exist compared with the heterosexual population. Sexual minorities tend to experience higher rates of acute and chronic conditions than the general population. Sexual minorities are more likely to delay seeking medical care and are less likely to lack a consistent source for health care. A provider's failure to recognize and a person's lack of disclosure prevent vital discussion

The double stigma-sexual stigma and ageism-can affect the health status of lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) older adults, but little is known about this topic in Portugal and internationally. The aim of this study was to assess the health status and the prevalence of chronic diseases of Portuguese LGB older adults, as well as to assess the relationship between double stigma and health status. A sample of 280 Portuguese LGB older adults completed a chronic disease questionnaire, the Homosexuality-Related Stigma Scale, the Ambivalent Ageism Scale, and the SF-12 Short Form Health Survey. Sexual and gender minorities have a higher risk for health and nutrition-related disparities across the life course compared to the heterosexual or cisgender population. Experiences of stigmatization and discrimination are associated with diminished mental health quality and psychological distress, which are risk factors for developing various eating disorders. Other nutrition disparities include increased risk for food insecurity, body dissatisfaction, and weight complications, such as those experienced by the transgender population in association with gender-affirming hormone therapies. Marginalized groups (including people of Color and sexual minorities) have been over-policed and specifically targeted based on their race/ethnicity and identity. The deleterious effects of over-policing marginalized groups include overrepresentation in the carceral system, experiencing higher rates of violence from police, and extend to affect mental health and stress levels. This study examines police-related stress among a U.S. national cohort of gay and bisexual men (collected in late 2020 and early 2021) and its association with race/ethnicity, age, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) stat

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention describes intimate partner violence (IPV) as a serious, preventable problem. The ALOHA (Assessing Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender [LGBT] Violence in Hawai'i) Study examines IPV in Hawai'i's LGBT community. The study's primary outcome is to determine the prevalence of IPV in Hawai'i's LGBT community, and secondary outcomes are to determine the prevalence of help-seeking behavior, associations between IPV and demographics, and associations between help-seeking behavior and demographics. This cross-sectional study included 477 subjects who se

Bisexual individuals experience unique forms of discrimination related to their sexual orientation (e.g., anti-bisexual prejudice), which occurs from both heterosexual and gay/lesbian individuals. Bisexual individuals may experience stigma differently depending on the gender of their relationship or sexual partners, because they may be perceived as heterosexual if they have a partner of a different gender and as gay/lesbian if they have a partner of the same gender. The present longitudinal study investigated within-persons differences in anti-bisexual experiences, internalized binegativity, a

BACKGROUND: Shigellosis is a highly contagious enteric bacterial disease transmitted through the fecal-oral route. It is primarily transmitted through person-to-person contact and via contaminated food and water. Outbreaks of shigellosis among men who have sex with men (MSM) attributed to sexual person-to-person contact have been reported. These outbreaks are of concern because they are often caused by multidrug-resistant strains of Shigella. Little is known about shigellosis-related knowledge, attitudes, and practices among gay, bisexual, and other MSM.
METHODS: Six focus groups were conduct

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To describe the experiences and wishes of lesbian and bisexual women concerning health care in Finland.
BACKGROUND: Sexual orientation is a personal aspect of identity and also an important aspect of holistic health care. Lesbian and bisexual women have unmet health needs. The way that healthcare personnel encounter lesbian and bisexual women affects whether they disclose their sexual orientation.
DESIGN: Qualitative inductive survey.
METHODS: The research data for this study were collected in spring 2018 using an electronic survey (n = 22). The data were analysed using

Although little is known about the specific burden of the opioid epidemic on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) populations, there is evidence to suggest that opioid use disorders are disproportionately prevalent in the LGBTQ community. In this commentary, we present an overview of the current state of evidence on opioid use and misuse among LGBTQ-identified people in the United States and suggest ways to adapt behavioral health interventions to the specific needs of this population. Programs that integrate behavioral health with primary care, address minority stress, and u

BACKGROUND: Researchers and activists have long called for changes to blood donation policies to end what is frequently framed as unjustified bans or deferral periods for men who have sex with men (MSM). Since 2016, in Canada, a man had to be abstinent from all sexual contact (anal or oral sex) with other men for at least 12 months in order to be an eligible blood donor. As of June 3, 2019, this deferral period was reduced to 3 months.
METHODS: To better understand the acceptance of existing deferral policies and possible future policy, we conducted 47 in-depth interviews with a demographical

Objective: Previous research has shown that experiences of racial discrimination and sexual objectification are associated with health risk behaviours among gay and bisexual men of colour. However, little is known about whether racial discrimination and sexual objectification are associated with alcohol use among this population. This community-based study examined the association between racial discrimination, sexual objectification and alcohol use in a sample of 369 gay and bisexual men of colour (Black/African/Caribbean, Latino/Latin American, South Asian, and East and Southeast Asian) in T
